Static Performances of Timber- and Bamboo-Concrete Composite Beams: A Critical Review of Experimental Results

2021

The use of composite beams made with traditional concrete and bio-based materials (such as timber and bamboo) is a valuable solution to reduce the environmental impact of the building sector. Timber-Concrete Composite (TCC) beams have been used for decades in structural applications such as new buildings, refurbishment of old timber structures, and bridges. Recently, different researchers suggested composite beams based on engineered bamboo, commonly named Bamboo-Concrete Composite (BCC) beams. This study presents a systematic comparison of structural performances and connection behavior of TCC and BCC beams under short-term static load. TCCs beams are compared to BCC ones using similar she…

Influence of a thin horizontal weak layer on the mechanical behaviour of shallow foundations resting on sand

2021

The presence of minor details of the ground, including soil or rock masses, occurs more frequently than what is normally believed. Thin weak layers, shear bands, and slickensided surfaces can substantially affect the behaviour of foundations, as well as that of other geostructures. In fact, they can affect the failure mechanisms, the ultimate bearing capacity of footings, and the safety factor of the geotechnical system. In this research, numerically conducted through Finite Element Code Plaxis 2D, the influence of a horizontal thin weak layer on the mechanical behaviour of shallow footings was evaluated. The obtained results prove that the weak layer strongly influences both the failure me…

Juxtapapillary duodenal diverticular bezor as an exceptional cause of biliary stent obstruction. Case report.

2007

INTRODUCTION: we describe the first case in literature of biliary stent obstruction by bezoar impaction in a iuxtapapillary duodenal diverticulum. CASE REPORT: this case illustrates an juxtapapillary duodenal diverticulum and bezoar in it causing obstructive jaundice in subject with two biliary stents for cholangiocarcinoma (Klatskin's tumor) in the absence of bile duct stones. RESULT: successful treatment with endoscopic stent removal and diverticulum toilette. Obstructive jaundice was cured after endoscopic removal of the bezoar and stent substitution. DISCUSSION: the presence of a bezoar and its possible contribution to the pathogenesis of pancreatitis in the presence of periampullary ex…

Application of the 3-D boundary element method to delaminated composite structures

2013

A three-dimensional boundary element model for anisotropic solids is presented to study the fracture mechanics behavior of delaminated composite structures. The multi-domain technique is implemented to model the layered configurations and the cracks occurring at bi-material interface. The Modified Crack Closure Integral technique is implemented to characterize the fracture mechanics behavior of delaminations in terms of the total energy release rate and mode mix phase angles. Validating analyses, performed on different delaminated configurations, have shown the effectiveness of the proposed approach. Moreover, some original results are presented to investigate the effects of the stacking se…

Surface plasmon propagation in metal nanowires

2012

Plasmonic circuitry is considered as a promising solution-effectivetechnology for miniaturizing and integrating the next generation ofoptical nano-devices. The realization of a practical plasmonic circuitry strongly depends on the complete understanding of the propagation properties of two key elements: surface plasmons and electrons. The critical part constituting the plasmonic circuitry is a waveguide which can sustain the two information-carriers simultaneously. Therefore, we present in this thesis the investigations on the propagation of surface plasmons and the co-propagation of surface plasmons and electrons in single crystalline metal nanowires. This thesis is therefore divided into …

Biowaiver Monograph for Immediate-Release Solid Oral Dosage Forms: Bisoprolol Fumarate

2014

Abstract Literature data relevant to the decision to allow a waiver of in vivo bioequivalence (BE) testing for the approval of immediate-release (IR) solid oral dosage forms containing bisoprolol as the sole active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) are reviewed. Bisoprolol is classified as a Class I API according to the current Biopharmaceutics Classification System (BCS). In addition to the BCS class, its therapeutic index, pharmacokinetic properties, data related to the possibility of excipient interactions, and reported BE/bioavailability problems are taken into consideration. Qualitative compositions of IR tablet dosage forms of bisoprolol with a marketing authorization (MA) in ICH (Inter…

GLP-1 Receptor Agonists and Cardiovascular Disease in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes

2018

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease prevalence of which is high and continually growing. Cardiovascular disease continues to be the leading cause of death in patients with T2DM. The prevention of cardiovascular complications and the cardiovascular safety of treatments should be a primary objective when selecting treatment. Among all the drugs available, the compounds known as glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) appear to be not just innocuous in terms of CVD but indeed to be beneficial. GLP-1 RA actions not only translate on an improvement of well-known cardiovascular risk factors such as glycaemic control, dyslipidaemia, weight, or arterial hypertension but also might …

Adiponectin, resistin and leptin in paediatric chronic renal failure: Correlation with auxological and endocrine profiles

2013

Introduction: Chronic renal failure (CRF) compromises nutrition, growth, puberty, glycometabolic homeostasis, and adipokine secretion (i.e. adiponectin, resistin, and leptin). Adipokines play a role in the clinical outcome, but data in paediatric patients is scant. Aim: To evaluate the link between kidney function, adiponectin, resistin, leptin, hormonal status, nutritional state and late outcome of CRF children. Materials and methods: We studied leptin, adiponectin and resistin levels in 31 CRF patients (19 males, 12 females, aged 12.1 ± 4.47 years) managed conservatively, and 30 healthy age- and gender-matched controls. Clinical, auxological, biochemical, hormonal data, glucose and insuli…

Impact of Fasting Glycemia on Short-Term Prognosis after Acute Myocardial Infarction

2007

The prognosis of patients with acute myocardial infarction (MI), according to the new criteria for impaired fasting glucose (IFG) (FG 100-126 mg/dl), has not been evaluated.A total of 2353 patients with acute MI and surviving at d 5 after admission were analyzed for short-term morbidity and mortality. FG was obtained at d 4 and 5. Patients were classified as diabetes mellitus (known diabetes or FGor = 126 mg/dl), high IFG (110or = FG126 mg/dl), low IFG (100or = FG110 mg/dl), and normal fasting glucose (NFG) (FG100 mg/dl).Among the 2353 patients, 968 (41%) had diabetes mellitus, 262 (11%) had high IFG, 332 (14%) had low IFG, and 791 (34%) had NFG. Compared with NFG patients, 30-d cardiovascu…
