New aspects in the histological examination of polyethylene wear particles in failed total joint replacements.

The most important long-term complication in total joint replacements is aseptic osteolysis. Wear particles such as polyethylene (PE) debris are considered to be one of the causes that play a central role. Several studies indicated that PE can be visualised in paraffin-embedded tissue sections not only by polarised light, but also after oil red staining. Liver regeneration induced by a designer human IL‐6/ sIL‐6R fusion protein reverses severe hepatocellular injury

The cytokine IL-6 plays a significant role in liver regeneration in conjunction with additional growth factors (HGF, TNF-α, and TGF-α). Many IL-6 effects depend on a naturally occurring soluble IL-6 receptor (sIL-6R). Here, the chimeric protein hyper-IL-6, constructed from the human IL-6 protein fused to a truncated form of its receptor, was found to have superagonistic IL-6 properties, and as such, enhanced liver cell regeneration. Hyper-IL-6 reversed the state of hepatotoxicity and enhanced the survival rates of rats suffering from fulminant hepatic failure after D-galactosamine administration. Trends in modes of death in heart failure over the last two decades: less sudden death but cancer deaths on the rise.

AIMS Better management of heart failure (HF) over the past two decades has improved survival, mainly by reducing the incidence of death due to cardiovascular (CV) causes. Deaths due to non-CV causes, particularly cancer, may be increasing. This study explored the modes of death of consecutive patients who attended a HF clinic over 17 years. METHODS AND RESULTS A total of 935 deaths were ascertained from 2002 to 2018 among 1876 patients (mean age 65.8 ± 12.5 years, 75% men, left ventricular ejection fraction < 50%) admitted to our HF clinic. Clinical manifestations and management of four children with Pearson syndrome.

Pearson marrow-pancreas syndrome is a fatal disorder mostly diagnosed during infancy and caused by mutations of mitochondrial DNA. We hereby report on four children affected by Pearson syndrome with hematological disorders at onset. The disease was fatal to three of them and the fourth one, who received hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, died of secondary malignancy. In this latter patient transplantation corrected hematological and non-hematological issues like metabolic acidosis, and we therefore argue that it could be considered as a useful option in an early stage of the disease.
