Homing and memory patterns of human gammadelta T cells in physiopathological situations.
2004
Vgamma9Vdelta2 are a heterogeneous population of T cells and comprise distinct naive, memory and effector populations that can be distinguished on the basis of surface marker expression and effector functions. We review here these recently studied features of Vgamma9Vdelta2 T lymphocyte biology and the roles they play in infectious and autoimmune diseases.
Red Blood Cells Polarize Green Laser Light Revealing Hemoglobin's Enhanced Non-Fundamental Raman Modes
2014
In general, the first overtone modes produce weak bands that appear at approximately twice the wavenumber value of the fundamental transitions in vibrational spectra. Here, we report the existence of a series of enhanced non-fundamental bands in resonance Raman (RR) spectra recorded for hemoglobin (Hb) inside the highly concentrated heme environment of the red blood cell (RBC) by exciting with a 514.5 nm laser line. Such bands are most intense when detecting parallel-polarized light. The enhancement is explained through excitonic theory invoking a type C scattering mechanism and bands have been assigned to overtone and combination bands based on symmetry arguments and polarization measureme…
Digestive vacuoles of Plasmodium falciparum are selectively phagocytosed by and impair killing function of polymorphonuclear leukocytes.
2011
AbstractSequestration of parasitized erythrocytes and dysregulation of the coagulation and complement system are hallmarks of severe Plasmodium falciparum malaria. A link between these events emerged through the discovery that the parasite digestive vacuole (DV), which is released together with infective merozoites into the bloodstream, dually activates the intrinsic clotting and alternative complement pathway. Complement attack occurs exclusively on the membrane of the DVs, and the question followed whether DVs might be marked for uptake by polymorphonuclear granulocytes (PMNs). We report that DVs are indeed rapidly phagocytosed by PMNs after schizont rupture in active human serum. Uptake …
Effects of Nest and Colony Features on Lesser Kestrel (Falco naumanni) Reproductive Success
2012
The Lesser Kestrel is a facultative colonial raptor mostly breeding in man-made structures. During 2009-2011 we checked the fate of 545 nests found in 18 colonies located in south-eastern Sicily. We determined the reproductive success of breeding pairs by analysing the survival time of each egg to hatching ( n = 2,495) and each nestling to fledging ( n = 1,849) with the linear hazard model of survival times. We determined whether egg and nestling survival differed between years with a Gehan–Wilcoxon test. By Cox regressions, we related the survival times with nest and colony features. Egg and nestling survival times showed a strong annual effect. The two reproductive stages of the Lesser K…
Organochlorine pesticides and Polychlorinated Biphenyl Congeners in Lanner Falco biarmicus feldeggii Schlegel chicks and Lanner Prey in Sicily, Italy
2008
This paper reports on research conducted to elucidate the risk posed to the Sicilian population of the endangered lanner falcon Falco biarmicus feldeggii Schlegel by organochlorine (OC) pesticides and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), as part of a wider study on contaminant risk to the lanner. Seventeen lanner nest sites were studied in northern and central Sicily. Sampling (in 2005)and analysis were carried out for selected OC pesticides and PCB congeners in lanner chick blood (15 chicks from 6 nest sites) and in two of the main lanner prey species, magpie Pica pica (36 individuals from 6 lanner nest sites) and rock dove Columba livia (10 individuals from 2 lanner nest sites). No OC and PC…
Environmental suitability model for the lanner falcon Falco biarmicus feldeggii: planning, study and monitoring the Sicilian population
2017
The identification of suitable areas, by spatially explicit distribution models, is crucial for conservation of threatened species as the lanner falcon Falco biarmicus feldeggii. Monitoring and collecting data on lanner falcon during years has proven to be essential for better defining the areas of species environmental suitability. Recent research shows that breeding performances of this species are strongly influenced by bioclimatic factors, especially monthly temperature and rainfall, or linked to landscape morphology, such as the slope of territories. These environmental parameters combined with species productivity (number of fledged juveniles per checked pair) of geo-referenced breedi…

Sistematica del Falco pellegrino (Falco peregrinus) in Italia
2021
Validated data and published studies indicate that four subspecies are present in continental Italy and its surrounding islands. Two of these subspecies (F. p. peregrinus and F. p. brookei) represent breeding populations, while the other two (F. p. calidus and F. p. pelegrinoides) winter and migrate in the country. Indeed, the European subspecies (F. p. peregrinus) has the most intriguing status, as it can both breed and winter. The exact range of the breeding population is not well-defined - it probably occurs in alpine and pre-alpine areas, perhaps reaching the Apennines of central Italy. Individuals originating from northern European countries in autumn and winter certainly implement thi…
IL FALCO PELLEGRINO (Falco peregrinus) IN SICILIA
2021
having doubled in number during the period 1978-2006, the population of the Peregrine Falcon Falco peregrinus living in Sicily currently seems to be stable, and has very probably reached the carrying capacity at the current ecological conditions of the insular ecosystems. A continuous standardized census (2010-2019) estimated at least 257 pairs scattered across the main island, plus some 13-15 pairs living on the small islands around Sicily. The population is not randomly distributed, but rather it is concentrated in all the suitable habitats of the island, nesting in either small crags or large cliffs from sea level to 1,424 m asl; it is rarer in the north-eastern corner (Peloritani, Nebro…
