Risk factors for high fall risk in elderly patients with chronic kidney disease

Purpose: Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) usually represent an aging population, and both older age and CKD are associated with a higher risk of falling. Studies on risk factors among subjects with CKD are lacking. Methods: Records of outpatients from one geriatric clinic in Turkey were retrospectively reviewed. A result of ≥ 13.5 s on the timed up and go (TUG) test was accepted as a high risk of falls. Independent predictors of an increased risk of falls among subjects with CKD (estimated glomerular filtration rate of < 60 mL/min/1.73 m2) were identified using logistic regression models. Association ankle function and balance in community-dwelling older adults.

The objective of this study was to investigate the association between ankle function and balance in older adults, with a focus on range of motion (ROM) and strength. Methods This was a cross-sectional study that included 88 healthy community-dwelling older adults. Ankle mobility was measured while bearing weight (lunge test) and not bearing weight. In response to a balance disturbance, older individuals often require multiple steps to prevent a fall. Reliance on multiple steps to recover balance is predictive of a future fall, so studies should determine the mechanisms underlying differences between older adults who can and cannot recover balance with a single step. [Spontaneous pneumoperitoneum: a case secondary to thoracic trauma].

Spontaneous pneumoperitoneum is the radiographic manifestation of free air in the peritoneal cavity without visceral perforations and peritoneal signs, and it occurs in about 10% of the cases of pneumoperitoneum. The etiology can be postoperative, thoracic, abdominal, gynecologic, idiopathic; it generally introduces a benign evolution and does not require surgical treatment but just a conservative approach. The authors describe here a case of spontaneous pneumoperitoneum secondary to thoracic trauma. Is functional mobility an independent mortality risk factor in subjects with dementia?

Abstract Objective To investigate whether functional mobility is a predictor of 12-month mortality in elderly subjects with dementia. Study design Prospective multicentre study performed in nine French university hospitals. Patients aged 75 years or more and hospitalised in medical wards via the emergency department were eligible. Those with a diagnosis of dementia were considered in the analyses. Sports-related injuries in elderly men still active in sports.

By means of a questionnaire with a complementary interview and physical examination, the site and nature of sports injuries were investigated over a 10-year period (1977-1987) in 97 elderly athletes (age range 70-81 years). The athletes were still active in training and competition with a mean competition background of 15 years. Of the subjects studied 30 were strength/power athletes and the remaining 67 endurance athletes. Altogether we found 273 sports-related injuries (169 acute and 104 overuse injuries).
