Epistaxis and systemic disease
2008
Abstract We report the case of a 77-year-old man who presented nasal obstruction sensation and epistaxis. Otorhinolaryngologic examination revealed occupation of the left nasal passage and the left maxillary sinus by an inflammatory tumour, the biopsy results of which were inconclusive. While diagnostic tests were being carried out, the patient presented a severe systemic condition consisting mainly of anemia, acute renal failure, and cavitated diffuse bilateral lung infiltrates. In the light of the results of anti-neutrophilic cytoplasmic antibodies and renal biopsy, Wegener's granulomatosis was diagnosed and treatment for the disease was instituted, with a favourable response. Finally, cl…
Valorization of Wild Apple (
2018
The amplified production of fruit as well as burgeoning demand for plant-made food products have resulted in a sharp increase of waste. Currently, millions of tons of by-products are either being discarded or utilized rather ineffectively. However, these by-products may be processed and further incorporated as functional ingredients in making high-value food products with many physiological and biochemical effects. The chemical analysis of pomace oils using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS) and reversed-phase-liquid chromatography coupled with fluorescence detector (RP-HPLC/FLD) systems led to the identification and quantification of 56 individual lipophilic compounds including u…
Toxoplasmosis after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.
2000
In immunocompromised individuals, toxoplasmosis mostly occurs as a reactivation of a latent infection, causing severe to life-threatening disease. Thus, recipients who are seropositive for Toxoplasma gondii before an allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HCT) are at highest risk, although primary infections may also cause severe toxoplasmosis. The disease most often affects the central nervous system, but in HCT recipients other organs are involved in more than half of the cases. Because of the alteration of the immune response in these patients, serodiagnosis is not sufficiently reliable in the diagnosis of post-HCT toxoplasmosis, and direct detection of the causative agent is req…
Contrasting Effects of Environmental Concentrations of Sulfonamides on Microbial Heterotrophic Activities in Freshwater Sediments
2021
The sulfonamide antibiotics sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and sulfamethazine (SMZ) are regularly detected in surface sediments of contaminated hydrosystems, with maximum concentrations that can reach tens of μg kg–1 in stream and river sediments. Little is known about the resulting effects on the exposed benthic organisms. Here we investigated the functional response of stream sediment microbial communities exposed for 4 weeks to two levels of environmentally relevant concentrations of SMX and SMZ, tested individually. To this end, we developed a laboratory channel experiment where natural stream sediments were immersed in water contaminated with nominal environmental concentrations of 500 and 5,0…
Kelfiprim, a new sulpha-trimethoprim combination, versus cotrimoxazole, in the treatment of urinary tract infections: a multicentre, double-blind tri…
1982
A new combination of trimethoprim with a sulphonamide, named Kelfiprim, differs from cotrimoxazole in that: a) the sulpha drug is sulphamethopyrazine instead of sulphamethoxazole; b) the trimethoprim to sulpha ratio is 5:4 instead of 1:5;c) the presence of a long-acting sulphonamide allows the administration of a daily dose of one capsule, following an initial loading dose of two capsules; d) a reduced amount of trimethoprim is given, as compared to cotrimoxazole, without any decrease of efficacy. Kelfiprim [KP] was compared to contrimoxazole [Co] in a multicentre double blind trial. Sixty four patients suffering from acute and chronic infections of the upper and lower urinary tract entered…

Prevalence and antibiotic-resistance of Salmonella isolated from beef sampled from the slaughterhouse and from retailers in Dakar (Senegal)
2005
A study was made of Salmonella contamination in beef sampled from a slaughterhouse and from retailers in Dakar, Senegal. The serotypes as well as antibiotic-resistance patterns of the Salmonella isolates were determined. A total of 435 meat samples (236 from the slaughterhouse, 199 from retailers) were tested. Among them, 275 (63%) were positive for Salmonella, 43% (101/236) from the slaughterhouse and 87% (174/199) from the retailers. Furthermore, 97% of the investigated retailers had at least one beef sample contaminated by Salmonella. The 286 Salmonella isolates were divided into 51 serotypes. The most prevalent serotypes were Salmonella bredeney (25%), S. muenster (8%), S. waycross (7%)…
