Conservation value of forest plantations for bird communities in western Kenya
2008
Tree plantations of native and exotic species are frequently used to compensate for forest loss in the tropics. However, these plantations may support lower species diversity and different communities than natural forest. We therefore investigated bird communities in stands of natural forest, different types of tree plantations and secondary forest in Kakamega Forest, western Kenya. We compared birds differing in habitat specialisation, i.e. forest specialists, generalists, and visitors. We recorded significant differences in mean species richness and number of individuals among the different forest types. Stands of natural forest and plantations of indigenous tree species comprised more sp…
High seedling recruitment of indigenous tree species in forest plantations in Kakamega Forest, western Kenya
2009
Tree plantations are often used to compensate for the destruction and conversion of natural forests in the tropics. An important question is whether these plantations allow for the regeneration of indigenous tree species and are expected to transform into more natural forests in the future. To evaluate the potential of differently managed forest types for seedling recruitment of indigenous tree species we studied structural characteristics as well as tree and seedling communities in stands of natural forest, different types of tree plantations and secondary forest in Kakamega Forest, western Kenya. Forest types differed considerably in structural characteristics and tree composition with st…
Meža melleņu antocianīnu ekstrakta bioloģisko efektu izpēte intervences pētījumā geriatrijas pacientiem
2020
Dažādos zinātniskos pētījumos antocianīni uzrāda augstus antioksidatīvos efektus, pretiekaisuma iedarbību, kā arī spēju samazināt kardiovaskulāro slimību risku. Cilvēka organismam novecojot pieaug oksidatīvais stress un tā radītie bojājumi sekmē arī iekaisuma procesu veidošanos, vienlaikus paaugstinot hronisko saslimšanu riskus geriatrijas vecuma cilvēkiem. Darba mērķis bija noskaidrot meža melleņu antocianīnu ekstraktu saturoša uztura bagātinātāja intervences ietekmi, apskatot ar novecošanos saistītu asins bioķīmisko marķieru izmaiņas geriatrijas pacientiem. Rezultāti liecina, ka pēc 4 nedēļu meža melleņu antocianīnu ekstrakta kapsulu lietošanas 2 reizes dienā (50 mg/kaps.) ir droša geriat…
COVID-19 Pandemic: New Prevention and Protection Measures
2022
As of the end of February 2021, more than 420,000,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19 have been reported worldwide, with 5,856,224 deaths. Transmission of the different genetically engineered variants of SARS-CoV-2, which have been isolated since the beginning of the pandemic, occurs from one infected person to another by the same means: the airborne route, indirect contact, and occasionally the fecal–oral route. Infection is asymptomatic or may present with flulike symptoms such as fever, cough, and mild to moderate and severe respiratory distress, requiring hospitalization and assisted ventilation support. To control the spread of COVID-19, the World Health Organization (WHO) and Centers for …
Drug release from α,β-poly(N-2-hydroxyethyl)-DL-aspartamide based microparticles
2004
Spherical pH-sensitive microparticles have been prepared by reverse phase suspension polymerization technique. Starting polymer has been alpha,beta-poly(N-2-hydroxyethyl)-dl-aspartamide (PHEA) partially derivatized with glycidylmethacrylate (GMA). PHEAGMA copolymer (PHG) has been crosslinked in the presence of acrylic acid (AA) or methacrylic acid (MA) at various concentration. The obtained microparticles have been characterized by FT-IR spectrophotometry, particle size distribution analysis and scanning electron microscopy. In order to have information about water affinity of the prepared samples, swelling measurements have been carried out in aqueous media which simulate some biological f…
HSV-1 Glycoprotein D and Its Surface Receptors: Evaluation of Protein–Protein Interaction and Targeting by Triazole-Based Compounds through In Silico…
2023
Protein–protein interactions (PPI) represent attractive targets for drug design. Thus, aiming at a deeper insight into the HSV-1 envelope glycoprotein D (gD), protein–protein docking and dynamic simulations of gD-HVEM and gD-Nectin-1 complexes were performed. The most stable complexes and the pivotal key residues useful for gD to anchor human receptors were identified and used as starting points for a structure-based virtual screening on a library of both synthetic and designed 1,2,3-triazole-based compounds. Their binding properties versus gD interface with HVEM and Nectin-1 along with their structure-activity relationships (SARs) were evaluated. Four [1,2,3]triazolo[4,5-b]pyridines were i…
COUPLING ELECTROCHEMISTRY TO ELECTROSPRAY: A NOVEL PREPARATION OF GOLD NANOSTRUCTURES
2013
nanoparticles on ITO (Indium tin oxide) coated glass using the electrospray (ESI) method Method:The starting point of this study is that the ESI/MS spectrum (Figure 1) of an ethanolic solution of HAuCl 4 shows a reduction process of Au (III) strongly dependent on the Cone Voltage (CV) values (20, 80, 150 V), affording to the ion at m/z 197 (Au+). Further, the decrease of the abundance of this ion at the highest cone voltage suggests the subsequent its reduction with the formation of Au 0 . Figure 1: ESI/MS spectra of an ethanolic solution of HAuCl4 at various cone voltages: Conclusion: Such experimental evidence leads us to use electrospray technique as a preparative tool to obtain the form…
