Mobility of Acetylated Histones in Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate–Polyacrylamide Gel Electrophoresis

Abstract We describe an altered mobility for acetylated histone isoforms in sodium dodecyl sulfate–polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Isoforms of histones H3 and H4 with a higher acetylation degree have a slightly faster electrophoretic mobility. Since acetylation neutralizes the positive charge of the e-amino group of lysine, without significantly changing the molecular mass of the protein, the acetylation-dependent mobility shift could be explained by the increase of the net negative charge of the SDS–histone complexes. A possible consequence of this differential mobility for the acetylation site determination by protein microsequencing from SDS gels is discussed.

Influence of temperature on the hydration products of low pH cements

International audience; The chemical evolution of two hydrated "low pH" binders prepared from binary (60% Portland cement + 40% silica fume) or ternary (37.5% Portland cement +32.5% silica fume + 30% fly-ash) mixtures was characterized over one year at 20 degrees C. 50 degrees C, and 80 degrees C. The main hydrates were Al-substituted C-S-H. Raising the temperature from 20 to 80 degrees C caused a lengthening and cross-linking of their silicate chains. Ettringite that formed in pastes stored at 20 degrees C was destabilized. An enormous sulfur isotope excursion indicates marine anoxia during the end-Triassic mass extinction

The role of ocean anoxia as a cause of the end-Triassic marine mass extinction is widely debated. Here, we present carbonate-associated sulfate δ34S data from sections spanning the Late Triassic–Early Jurassic transition, which document synchronous large positive excursions on a global scale occurring in ~50 thousand years. Biogeochemical modeling demonstrates that this S isotope perturbation is best explained by a fivefold increase in global pyrite burial, consistent with large-scale development of marine anoxia on the Panthalassa margin and northwest European shelf. The late Rhaetian–early Hettangian transition is characterised by the emplacement of Central Atlantic magmatic province and associated climatic effects, coincident with a severe biotic crisis (~201.5 Ma). The oxygen deficiency in the ocean realm is possibly linked to this significant loss in marine biodiversity. Anti-acids lead to immunological and morphological changes in the intestine of BALB/c mice similar to human food allergy

Abstract We have shown that anti-acid medication for treating dyspeptic disorders can block protein digestion and induce a higher risk for food sensitization. This mechanism was confirmed in human and animal studies on the humoral as well as the cellular level. Here we aimed to investigate the outcome of the treatment with the anti-acid drug sucralfate on the intestine in our murine model, assuming that morphological and immunological changes will occur. Flow injection spectrophotometric determination of lead using 1,5-diphenylthiocarbazone in aqueous micellar

A simple flow injection colorimetric procedure for determining lead was established. It is based on the reaction of lead in sulfuric acid with 1,5-diphenylthiocarbazone and sodium dodecyl sulfate, resulting in an intense red-blue complex with a suitable absorption at 500 nm. A standard or sample solution was injected into the sulfuric acid stream (flow rate of 2.0 ml min(-1)), which was then merged with sodium dodecyl sulfate stream (flow rate of 2.0 ml min(-1)) and 1,5-diphenylthiocarbazone stream (flow rate of 1.5 ml min(-1)). Aircraft-based operation of an aerosol mass spectrometer: Measurements of tropospheric aerosol composition

The Aerodyne quadrupole aerosol mass spectrometer was deployed on the Falcon twin jet research aircraft operated by Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt (DLR). This was the first deployment of an AMS in a jet aircraft. Aerosol mass concentration measurements in the troposphere up to altitudes of about 11 km were performed within two measurement flights on 12 and 14 May 2003 over southern Germany. Background aerosol data were gained up to 6 km, while aircraft exhaust aerosol was be sampled at higher altitudes on 14 May, indicating the presence of sulfuric acid and unburned hydrocarbons in the exhaust particles. Risk assessment of gypsum amendment on agricultural fields: Effects of sulfate on riverine biota

Gypsum (CaSO4 ∙ 2H2 O) amendment is a promising way of decreasing the phosphorus loading of arable lands, and of thus preventing aquatic eutrophication. However, in freshwaters with low sulfate concentrations, gypsum-released sulfate may pose a threat to the biota. To assess such risks, we performed a series of sulfate toxicity tests in the laboratory and conducted field surveys. These field surveys were associated with a large-scale pilot exercise involving spreading gypsum on agricultural fields covering 18% of the Savijoki River catchment area.
