Development of the central nervous system (CNS) involves the transformation of a two-dimensional epithelial sheet of uniform ectodermal cells, the neuroectoderm, into a highly complex three-dimensional structure consisting of a huge variety of different neural cell types. Characteristic numbers of each cell type become arranged in reproducible spatial patterns, which is a prerequisite for the establishment of specific functional contacts. Identity, origin, and migration of peripheral glial cells in the Drosophila embryo.

Glial cells are crucial for the proper development and function of the nervous system. In the Drosophila embryo, the glial cells of the peripheral nervous system are generated both by central neuroblasts and sensory organ precursors. Most peripheral glial cells need to migrate along axonal projections of motor and sensory neurons to reach their final positions in the periphery. Here we studied the spatial and temporal pattern, the identity, the migration, and the origin of all peripheral glial cells in the truncal segments of wildtype embryos. Abstract In Drosophila, central nervous system (CNS) formation starts with the delamination from the neuroectoderm of about 30 neuroblasts (NBs) per hemisegment. They give rise to approximately 350 neurons and 30 glial cells during embryonic development. Understanding the mechanisms leading to cell fate specification and differentiation in the CNS requires the identification of the NB lineages. The embryonic lineages derived from 17 NBs of the ventral part of the neuroectoderm have previously been described (Bossing et al., 1996). Competence of blastomeres for the expression of molecular tissue markers is acquired by diverse mechanisms in the embryo of Platynereis (Annelida)

This paper is devoted to the role of cell divisions for the establishment of histospecificity in the embryo of the spiralian, Platynereis dumerilii (Annelida). We have incubated successive cleavage stages in cytochalasin B (CCB) and observed whether the cells thereafter were able to acquire the competence for expressing histospecific antigens of larval gland cells (labelled by the monoclonal antibody OI64) and of neural components of the ventral nerve cord (labelled by mAb OI7 or by testing acety1cholinesterase activity), respectively. A study of electrochemically-induced corrosion of low carbon steel in a medium modelling acid rain

Complementary electrochemical, spectrophotometric and electron microsopic investigations were made in addition to the conversion electron Mossbauer spectroscopic (CEMS) measurements to learn more about the mechanism of corrosion of low carbon steel samples in aqueous sulfate and sulfite containing sulfate solutions (pH 3.5, 6.5 and 8.5). Passivation of iron in pure sulfate solution was studied in detail in earlier papers. conversion electron Mössbauer study of low carbon steel polarized in aqueous sulfate solution containing sulfite in low concentration

The passivation of low carbon steel was studied in aqueous solution of 0.5 M Na2SO4+0.001 M NaHSO3 at pH=3.5 and 6.5. The found major components at pH-3.5 were: γ-FeOOH and Fe3C, and also FeSO4.H2O could be identified on the surface of the low carbon steel as a minor component. At pH-6.5, the passive film contained only amorphous iron(III)-oxide or oxyhydroxide.

From ‘green’ technologies to ‘red’ antioxidant compounds extraction of purple corn: a combined ultrasound-ultrafiltration-purification approach

A pilot scale process consisting of ultrasound-assisted extraction, ammonium sulfate precipitation, cross-flow ultrafiltration and AB-8 macroporous resins purification aiming to recover anthocyanins and zein from purple corn (PC) was optimized and scaled-up. The effects of five independent variables (ethanol concentration, liquid to solid ratio, ultrasound temperature, time and power) were discussed and the most influential factors were optimized.; Results: The highest total anthocyanin (0.45 ± 0.01 g kg-1 ) and zein (17.14 ± 1.73 g kg-1 ) contents from purple corn were obtained using an ultrasound power of 105 W, an extraction time of 90 min, an ethanol concentration of 74% and a liquid to…

AbstractHuman papillomavirus type 33 (HPV-33) pseudovirus infection is a slow process dependent on the initial interaction with cell-surface heparan sulfate (T. Giroglou, L. Florin, F. Schafer, R. E. Streeck, and M. Sapp, 2001a, J. Virol. 75, 1565–1570). We have now further dissected the initial steps of pseudovirus uptake using removal of cell-surface proteoglycans and selective inhibition of entry pathways. Localization of n-alcohols and structural effects in aqueous solutions of sodium dodecyl sulfate

Small-angle neutron Mattering measurements OD sodium dodecyl sulfate aqueous solutions have been performed in the presence of n-alcohols, from methanol to octanol, at different alcohol concentrations. By modeling the experimental intensities, it was possible to obtain structural information and to derive simultaneously the distribution of the alcohols between the aqueous and the micellar phases. It was found that short chain alcohols tend to remain in the aqueous phase and, by altering the solvent properties, induce a decrease in the aggregation number of sodium dodecyl sulfate micelles.
