Interrelationship between reproductive hormones and acute phase proteins during estrous cycle and pregnancy in Spanish purebred broodmares
2021
Highlights • Steroid hormones and acute phase proteins in cyclic and pregnant mares were evaluated. • SAA and CRP did not discriminate cyclic and pregnant mares. • Pregnancy induced a limited acute phase response in Spanish purebred mares. • SAA, Hp and CRP were independent of E1 and P4 dynamics during pregnancy.
Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal Dysfunction in the Polycystic Ovary Syndrome
2007
Between 20 and 30% of patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) demonstrate adrenal androgen (AA) excess, detectable primarily by elevated dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS) levels. Generalized adrenocortical hyperresponsivity to adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) stimulation is also observed and may be the principal mechanism determining AA excess in PCOS. The causes of this abnormality are unclear, but increased peripheral metabolism of cortisol, altered factors regulating glucose-mediated glucose disposal, and perhaps ovarian sex steroids may in different ways contribute to the AA excess in PCOS. Additionally, DHEAS levels and the response of AAs to ACTH are relatively constant …
Physical chemical properties and kinetics of redox processes in water/soybean oil microemulsions
2008
Molecular Basis for the Regulation of Cell Fate by the Lethal (2) Giant Larvae Tumour Suppressor Gene of Drosophila Melanogaster
2007
Tumour suppressor genes act as recessive determinants of cancer. Their function is required for normal cell growth and differentiation during development. When both alleles of these developmental genes are inactivated, cell growth becomes unrestricted. In Drosophila, a series of genes have been identified which when mutated produce tissue-specific tumours. Of these the lethal(2)giant larvae (l(2)gl) gene is the best studied. Homozygous l(2)gl mutations cause the development of malignant tumours in the brain and the imaginal discs. Genomic DNA from the l(2)gl locus has been cloned, introduced back into l(2)gl mutant animals by P-element-mediated transformation and shown to restore normal dev…
A christmas gift: Signature of the 24th December 2018 eruption of Mt. Etna on the chemical composition of bulk deposition in eastern sicily
2020
The eruption of Mt. Etna which occurred on December 24th 2018 was characterized by strombolian activity and fire fountains, emitted by the New South-East Crater and along a fissure that propagated towards the SE. The influence of volcanic emissions on atmospheric deposition was clearly detectable at several kilometres from the source. Wet and dry (bulk) deposition samples were collected each month, through a network of eleven collectors, in the areas of Milazzo, and Priolo between June 2018 and June 2019. They were analysed for major ions and trace elements concentrations. The pH values range from 3.9 to 8.3, while the EC values range from 7 to 396 μS cm-1. An extensive neutralization of th…

The main limnological characteristics of the biogenic meromictic Lake La Cruz, a small karstic lake located on a dolomitic substrate, are outlined below. The lake owes its chemical stratification mainly to high concentrations of bicarbonate and calcium in the permanent monimolimnion, located below a depth of 19 m. A massive precipitation of CaCO3 crystals ("whiting"), occurring in the euphotic zone every summer, leads to further sedimentation and redissolution in deep waters with enhanced CO2 concentrations. Other ions, like magnesium, ammonium, reduced iron, silicate, etc. also contribute to the chemically-induced stability of the monimolimnion. The patterns of stratification during two co…
Anaerobic Degradation of the Invasive Weed Solidago canadensis L. (goldenrod) and Copper Immobilization by a Community of Sulfate-Reducing and Methan…
2023
The weed Solidago canadensis L. poses a global threat to the environment as it spreads uncontrollably on roadsides, in forests, fields, meadows, and farmland. Goldenrod emits toxic substances that suppress other plants on the site, displacing wild ones. Thus, goldenrod conquers huge areas very quickly. The use of herbicides and mechanical methods does not solve the problem of the spontaneous spread of goldenrod. On the other hand, many scientists consider goldenrod as a valuable source of biologically active substances: flavonoids, phenolic compounds, vitamins, etc. In this study, we consider Solidago plants as a promising, free (cheap), and renewable substrate for the production of methane…
Degradation of Antibiotic Vancomycin by UV Photolysis and Pulsed Corona Discharge Combined with Extrinsic Oxidants
2023
Antibiotics are the most frequently detected pharmaceuticals in the environment creating conditions for the development of resistant genes in bacteria. Degradation and mineralization of glycopeptide antibiotic vancomycin (VMN) were examined by UV photolysis, pulsed corona discharge (PCD), and their combinations with extrinsic oxidants, hydrogen peroxide (HP), peroxydisulfate (PDS), and peroxymonosulfate (PMS). Both combinations were effective in VMN degradation and faster at pH 11 than in acidic or neutral media. Combined with the UV photolysis, HP showed a higher oxidation rate than other oxidants, whereas PMS and PDS proved to be more efficient in combinations with PCD. In contrast to low…

Wildt, J.; Secondary organic aerosol (SOA) accounts for a significant fraction of ambient tropospheric aerosol and a detailed knowledge of the formation, properties and transformation of SOA is therefore required to evaluate its impact on atmospheric processes, climate and human health. The chemical and physical processes associated wit…
