Dietary fatty acids in the retina: beyond DHA, is EPA the underestimate intermediate?. 12. congress of the international society for the study of fatty acids and lipids
Effect of dietary omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids on IOP elevation, electroretinographic changes and retinal ganglion cell loss in a laser-induced ra…

International audience; Purpose:To test the efficacy of dietary omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids in a rat model of glaucoma induced by laser photocoagulation. Methods:Male Sprague Dawley rats were fed for 3 months with a diet containing either: 1) 17% of omega-3 fatty acids (10% EPA + 7% DHA), 2) 10% of omega-6 fatty acids (as GLA), or 3) a combination of both omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids (10% EPA + 7% DHA + 10% GLA), by comparison with a control group of animals fed with a standard diet deprived of EPA, DHA and GLA (n=10 in each group). After 3 months of diet, glaucoma was induced in one eye of each animal by laser photocoagulation (532nm) of the episcleral veins, the trabeculum and the l…
Serum omega-3 fatty acids are not associated with age-related macular degeneration
2012
Revue non indexée dans le JCR.; International audience; Evaluation of: Kabasawa S, Mori K, Horie-Inoue K et al. Associations of cigarette smoking but. not serum fatty acids with age-related macular degeneration in a Japanese population. Ophthalmology 118(6), 1082–1088 (2011). Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of visual impairment in the elderly. in developed countries. Risk factors for AMD are classified into endogenous nonmodifiable. factors, including genetics and environmental factors such as smoking and dietary habits. Both. epidemiological and experimental studies suggest that dietary omega-3 long-chain fatty acids. would participate to prevent from the develo…

Salivary lipolytic activity seems to modulate the basal free fatty acid concentration in human saliva
2017
The perception of fat is a complex sensation that involves various sensory modalities, such as texture, aroma and taste. Taste perception is supported by the discovery of fatty acid receptors in the tongue papillae. However, dietary fat is mainly composed of esterified fatty acids, whereas only free fatty acids can bind to taste receptors. In this context, the literature often mentioned the necessity and efficiency of a salivary lipolytic activity to hydrolyse the esterified fatty acids present in foods and enable fat perception. We made a complementary hypothesis in which salivary lipolytic activity is also involved in regulating the basal level of salivary fatty acids in saliva. To test t…
Valorization of Side Stream Products from Sea Cage Fattened Bluefin Tuna (Thunnus thynnus): Production and In Vitro Bioactivity Evaluation of Enriche…
2022
The valorization of side streams from fishery and aquaculture value-chains is a valuable solution to address one of the challenges of the circular economy: turning wastes into profit. Side streams produced after filleting of sea cage fattened bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus) were analyzed for proximate composition and fatty acid profile to evaluate the possibility of producing tuna oil (TO) as a valuable source of ω-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) and testing its bioactivity in vitro. Ethyl esters of total fatty acids (TFA), obtained from TO, were pre-enriched by urea complexation (PUFA-Ue) and then enriched by short path distillation (SPD) up to almost 85% of the PUFA fraction (PU…
Tryptophan metabolic pathways and brain serotonergic activity: A comparative review
2019
The essential amino acid L-tryptophan (Trp) is the precursor of the monoaminergic neurotransmitter serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT). Numerous studies have shown that elevated dietary Trp has a suppressive effect on aggressive behavior and post-stress plasma cortisol concentrations in vertebrates, including teleosts. These effects are believed to be mediated by the brain serotonergic system, even though all mechanisms involved are not well understood. The rate of 5-HT biosynthesis is limited by Trp availability, but only in neurons of the hindbrain raphe area predominantly expressing the isoform TPH2 of the enzyme tryptophan hydroxylase (TPH). In the periphery as well as in brain areas …
