Background  To validate a self-administered 20-item short questionnaire (SQ) for classifying individuals according to their intake of total fat, saturated (SFA), monounsaturated (MUFA), and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), as well as cholesterol. Methods  The SQ was sent to a randomly selected subsample of 300 participants of the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) in Heidelberg. The SQ was sent back by 244 participants (52.5% women, 47.5% men). Intake of total fat, SFA, MUFA, PUFA, and cholesterol was calculated from a 148-item food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). Similar relative decline in aerobic and anaerobic power with age with in elite endurance and power master athletes of both sexes

Lower physical activity levels in old age are thought to contribute to the age-related decline in peak aerobic and anaerobic power. Master athletes maintain high levels of physical activity with advancing age and endurance or power training may influence the extent to which these physical functions decline with advancing age. To investigate, 37-90-year-old power (n=20, 45% female) and endurance (n=19, 58% female) master athletes were recruited. Abstract PURPOSE: Elevated plasma concentrations of low-density lipoproteins (LDL) increase risk for coronary heart disease. However, lipoprotein profiles rich in small, dense LDL particles confer greater risk than those that mainly consist of large, buoyant LDL. This may be due, in part, to the greater oxidative susceptibility of small, dense LDL. Excessive postprandial triglyceride (TG) responses despite normal fasting TG levels have been described in single cases within small groups of healthy subjects and in patients with obesity or precocious atherosclerosis, known to be associated with high insulin fasting levels. Comparing the results of a cholesterol and saturated fat screener when using two different scores.

Screener are useful instruments for categorising individuals according to their nutrient intake. To accurately classify the individuals it is important to correctly analyse the screener. Therefore we compared a simple and a weighed score of a cholesterol and saturated fat (SF) screener with the cholesterol and SF intake, respectively, calculated from an extensive food frequency questionnaire. The validation results did not change when a weighed score was used instead of the simple one, indicating that a simple score does not introduce a higher amount of misclassification.

Background The important triacylglycerol-lowering capacity of n-3 fatty acids is counterbalanced by their inherent sensitivity to oxidation. Inconsistent results about the latter have been reported in hypertriglyceridemic individuals. After incorporation into cell membranes, n-3 fatty acids may alter membrane-related functions. Pain-induced alterations in the individual non-esterified fatty acids in serum.

Changes of individual non-esterified fatty acids in serum were studied in 7 metabolically healthy patients, suffering from idiopathic trigeminal neuralgia, who underwent electrocoagulation of gasserian ganglion under neurolepthypalgesia. The mean concentration of fatty acids increased by about 40% during the strong surgical pain stimulus. The increased lipolysis affected all individual fatty acids in proportion to the ratio of their presence in adipose tissue. The mechanism of pain-induced activation of lipase and possible consequences of alterations in individual non-esterified fatty acids are discussed.
