Chemical and biochemical responses to sub−lethal doses of mercury and cadmium in gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata)

Specimens of Sparus aurata were exposed to sub-lethal concentrations of Hg and Cd for 25 days and the levels of both metals were investigated in organs and tissues. Bioaccumulation of Hg decreased as follow: gills &gt; kidney &gt; liver &gt; skin &gt; muscle, while the order of Cd bioaccumulation was: liver &gt; kidney &gt; gills &gt; skin &gt; muscle. Immediately after exposure, both metals showed the highest bioaccumulation in gills and skin indicating that these organs are reliable targets for biomonitoring studies after short term exposure. Analysis of composition, morphology, and biosynthesis of cuticular wax in wild type bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus L.) and its glossy mutant

Abstract In this study, cuticular wax load, its chemical composition, and biosynthesis, was studied during development of wild type (WT) bilberry fruit and its natural glossy type (GT) mutant. GT fruit cuticular wax load was comparable with WT fruits. In both, the proportion of triterpenoids decreased during fruit development concomitant with increasing proportions of total aliphatic compounds. In GT fruit, a higher proportion of triterpenoids in cuticular wax was accompanied by a lower proportion of fatty acids and ketones compared to WT fruit as well as lower density of crystalloid structures on berry surfaces. High-performance liquid chromatographic study of the regulation of phospholipid metabolism in cultured adrenocortical cells

Abstract A rapid high-performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) method for the separation of phospholipids was developed for minute samples of total lipids (ca. 200 μg). The method was applied to the study of the phospholipid metabolism in adrenocortical cell cultures. A complete separation of the different cellular phospholipid classes was achieved in 40 min. The effects of two sequencing batch reactor operation strategies for phosphorus stream enrichment over the biological phosphorus removal performance have been studied. The objective of both strategies is of performing an extraction cycle in order to obtain a new stream highly enriched with phosphorus. In the 1st strategy the amount of influent volatile fatty acids (VFAs) is the same in each cycle; while in the 2nd strategy the influent VFAs concentration is increased during phosphorus extraction experiments.
