Large-eddy simulations of turbulent flow with heat transfer in simple and complex geometries using Harwell-FLOW3D
1996
Abstract Large-eddy simulation (LES) results are presented and discussed for the turbulent flow with heat transfer in different geometrical configurations, including a plane channel, a channel bearing transverse square ribs on one of the walls, and a crossed-corrugated air heater. They were obtained using the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code Harwell-FLOW3D (Release 2), finite-volume grids having up to 423 nodes, and the Smagorinsky subgrid model with several variants regarding near-wall damping and wall boundary conditions. The first problem (plane turbulent Poiseuille flow with heat transfer) was mainly used as a benchmark to investigate the influence of numerical methods (pressure-…

Experimental observation of Electronic Metal support interaction: investigation of Au/Ceria catalysts by HERFD–XANES
2015
In this paper we report the result of a recent experiment of high resolution XANES (HERFD-XANES) which evidenced this modification suggesting that gold clusters with very similar size can have a modified electronic structure (the empty d-Density-of-states) when they are deposited on ceria and titania oxide
Soil solarization with biodegradabile materials and its impact on soil microbial communities.
2008
Soil solarization (SS) seems one of the most promising techniques to control soilborne pathogens, but an important limitation to the diffusion of this technique is due to the drawback regarding the disposal of the used plastic materials. A possible solution to this problem is the use of biodegradable plastics. The aim of this study was compare the impact of SS with biodegradable materials with SS with plastic film and others pest management techniques (i.e. organic matter amendment, calcium cyanamide and Dazomet fungicide application) on crop productivity, soilborne disease incidence, weed suppression, and soil chemical (total N, ammonium, nitrate, available phosphorus, organic matter, hydr…
Internet-based information and foreign direct investment (FDI) location decision making: An information cost perspective
2012
Published version of an article in the journal: African Journal of Business Management. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.5897/AJBM11.1203 Open Access Information and communication technology (ICT) is considered to play an important role to reduce information cost for potential foreign investors. While a growing body of literature has suggested such connections, conceptual clarity is yet to be achieved. This study introduces a conceptual framework based on the Information-theoretic approach and transaction cost perspective to explore how ICT may reduce information cost. To illustrate our proposed framework, we apply it to examine the role of Internet-based informati…
Dynamic Role of Gold d-Orbitals during CO Oxidation under Aerobic Conditions
2022
High-energy-resolution fluorescence detection-X-ray absorption near-edge structure (HERFD-XANES) at the Au L3 edge was used to study gold catalysts supported on ceria in order to unravel the role of gold 5d orbital modifications during the activation of molecular oxygen. The variations in the HERFD-XANES resonance peak, which are directly correlated with the d-band occupancy, were monitored in situ during the redox process of the CO oxidation at room temperature under both aerobic and anaerobic conditions. Interestingly, upon the oxidation treatment and also during the aerobic CO oxidation treatment, the gold d-band fluctuates around an average value, proving that the gold clusters are part…

The first step of the project was the conduction of separated systematic reviews of the characteristics and applicability to critically ill, adult patients outside classical populations at ri…
A SIMULTANEOUS ENGINEERING APPROACH TO THE YACHT DESIGN
2009
The authors describe the approach applied to the design and manufacturing of a 15” dinghy which will challenge other similar sailing boats in fleet regattas. The Simultaneous Engineering approach appears to be the most powerful instrument since it permits to keep under control many variables simultaneously and then to reduce the Time To Market. Starting from regatta rules and limitations, the hull shape has been chosen and then modelled with a parametric CAD software. Such a model has been managed in order to be suitable for both FEM (Finite Element Method) and CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) analyses.
The Polish Nation: From a Multiethnic to an Ethnically Homogenous Nation-State
2009
In Chapter 4 I focused on the stateless noble natio of partitioned Poland-Lithuania that sought to transform itself into a Polish nation. The Polish-Lithuanian noble leaders paid lip service to the French model of the nation-state but, apart from a few lonely dissenting voices, had no intention to broaden the confines of the planned Polish nation to embrace the ‘third estate,’ that is, the peasantry and burghers. The social barrier of serfdom alone kept the nobles from associating with peasants. In the cities, a large and sometimes predominant, segment of the population was made up of German-speakers and Yiddish-speaking Jews. Their idioms disqualified them from participation in the emergin…
Optimal control in models with conductive‐radiative heat transfer
2003
In this paper an optimal control problem for the elliptic boundary value problem with nonlocal boundary conditions is considered. It is shown that the weak solutions of the boundary value problem depend smoothly on the control parameter and that the cost functional of the optimal control problem is Frechet differentiable with respect to the control parameter.
