Maximizing network capacity in an heterogeneous macro-micro cellular scenario

2011

The problem of resource allocation in cellular networks has been traditionally faced at two different levels: at the network level, in terms of frequency planning and reuse pattern design, and at the cell level, in terms of cell capacity optimizations based on channel-dependent scheduling, link adaptation, power control, and so on. While this second aspect has been deeply investigated in literature, the first aspect has been mainly faced with static or semi-dynamic reuse utilization solutions. In this paper we deal with the problem of multi-cellular resource allocation in heterogeneous OFDMA environments with reuse factor equal to 1, where base stations with different power constraints coex…

Detection of Signals in MC–CDMA Using a Novel Iterative Block Decision Feedback Equalizer

2022

This paper presents a technique to mitigate multiple access interference (MAI) in multicarrier code division multiple access (MC-CDMA) wireless communications systems. Although under normal circumstances the MC-CDMA system can achieve high spectral efficiency and resistance towards inter symbol interference (ISI) however when exposed to substantial nonlinear distortion the issue of MAI manifests. Such distortion results when the power amplifiers are driven into saturation or when the transmit signal experiences extreme adverse channel conditions. The proposed technique uses a modified iterative block decision feedback equalizer (IB-DFE) that uses a minimal mean square error (MMSE) receiver …

A Finite Difference Model of a PV-PCM System

2012

Abstract The performances of a photovoltaic panel (PV) are defined according to the “peak power” that identifies the maximum electric power supplied by the panel when it receives an insolation of 1 kW/m2 and the temperature of the cell is maintained at 25 °C. These conditions are only nominal since the solar radiation has a variable intensity and also the panel is subjected to thermal excursions; due to these reasons the real power efficiency of the panel is considerably lower than that obtainable in the nominal conditions. The study focused on assessing a method to reduce the peak temperatures of PV systems using Phase Change Materials (PCM). To this aim it was created a numerical model ca…

Secondary users selection and sparse narrow-band interference mitigation in cognitive radio networks

2018

Spectrum scarcity is a critical problem that may reduce the effectiveness of wireless technologies and services. To address this problem, different spectrum management techniques have been proposed in the literature such as overlay cognitive radio (CR) where the unlicensed users can share the same spectrum with the licensed users. The main challenges in overlay CR networks are the identification and detection of the Primary User (PU) signals in a multi-source narrow-band interference (NBI) scenario. Therefore, in this paper, we investigate the performance of an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) overlay CR network with Secondary Users (SUs) and subcarriers selection schemes. …

A Channel-Aware Adaptive System for Underwater Acoustic Communications

2021

In recent years, underwater communications have seen a growing interest pushed by marine research, oceanography, marine commercial operations, offshore oil industry and defense applications. Generally, underwater communications employ audio signals which can propagate relatively far. However, acoustic underwater channels are very challenging, because of limited bandwidth, long propagation delays, extended multipath, severe attenuation, rapid time variation and large Doppler shifts. A plethora of underwater communication techniques have been developed for dealing with such a complexity, mostly tailoring specific applications scenarios which can not be considered as one-size-fits-all solution…

Energy-efficient resource allocation for OFDMA two-way relay networks with imperfect CSI

2015

Most of the existed works on the radio resource allocation (RRA) problem commonly assume the channel-state information (CSI) can be perfectly obtained by the transmission source. However, such assumption is not practical in the realistic wireless systems. In this work, we consider the practical implementation issues of resource allocation in orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) two-way relay networks: the inaccuracy of channel-state information (CSI) available to the source. Instead, only the estimated channel status is known by the source. In this context, a joint optimization of subcarrier pairing and allocation, relay selection, and transmit power allocation is formulate…

Mechanical Bistable Structures for Microrobotics and Mesorobotics from Microfabrication to Additive Manufacturing

2018

International audience; The use of mechanical bistable structures in the design of microrobots and mesorobots has many advantages especially for flexible robotic structures. However, depending on the fabrication technology used, the adequacy of theoretical and experimental mechanical behaviors can vary widely. In this paper, we present the manufacturing results of bistable structures made with two extensively used contemporary technologies: MEMS and FDM additive manufacturing. Key issues of these fabrication technologies are discussed in the context of microrobotics and mesorobotics applications.

MUSIC-LS Modal Channel Estimation for an OFDM-OQAM System

2008

Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing based on offset quadrature amplitude modulation (OFDM-OQAM) signaling over frequency selective multipath channels shows inter-symbol interference (ISI) and Inter-Channel Interference (ICI) that degrade its performance. Channel equalization and channel estimation are needed to combat these intrinsic interferences. In this paper a novel modal channel estimator based on the MUltiple signal classification (MUSIC) and least squares (LS) algorithms for a wideband passband OFDM-OQAM signaling over static multipath channels is presented. The effects of the frequency selective channel on the received signal are described considering a wideband OFDM-OQAM sys…

MUSIC-based modal channel estimation for wideband OFDM-OQAM

2008

Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing based on offset quadrature amplitude modulation (OFDM-OQAM) over wideband frequency selective multipath channels suffers from inter-symbol interference (ISI) and inter-carrier interference (ICI) that degrade its performance. Channel estimation and equalization are needed to combat these interferences. In this paper a novel channel estimator for passband OFDM-OQAM signaling over wideband multipath channels, which is based on multiple signal classification (MUSIC) with the Spatial Smoothing technique is presented. Numerical simulation results are presented in the low number of subcarriers, i.e. wideband, scenario.
