PyDSC: a simple tool to treat differential scanning calorimetry data
2020
AbstractHerein, we describe an open-source, Python-based, script to treat the output of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) experiments, called pyDSC, available free of charge for download at https://github.com/leonardo-chiappisi/pyDSC under a GNU General Public License v3.0. The main aim of this program is to provide the community with a simple program to analyze raw DSC data. Key features include the correction from spurious signals, and, most importantly, the baseline is computed with a robust, physically consistent approach. We also show that the baseline correction routine implemented in the script is significantly more reproducible than different standard ones proposed by propriet…
European Economic Ethics Research
2020
The purpose of the European Economic Community’s founders was not only ‘mercantilist’, but ‘economic’, in the broader sense of the term ‘economics’. If there has been a specific model of Europe, it has been the social market economy. But the crisis of the welfare state has raised doubts about key features of that model. Does Europe have anything particular to offer in the economic realm? The approaches of economic ethics that have been developed in Europe have a lot to say in the formation of a ‘Euroethos’. The article tries to show the main European approaches and to delineate the traits of a European proposal.
A Case of Follicular Tumor of Uncertain Malignant Potential (FT-UMP) with Glomeruloid Features Showing Capsular Mucinous Degeneration
2021
The most recent revision of the World Health Organization (WHO) Classification of Tumours of Endocrine Organs introduced a new variant of follicular thyroid carcinoma (FTC). It is characterized by a “glomeruloid” architectural pattern of growth. We present a case of follicular tumor with glomeruloid features, with Alcian Blue positive mucinous stromal degeneration in foci of questionable capsular microinvasion. At our knowledge, this the second case of glomeruloid follicular tumor in the literature and the first case in which Alcian Blue staining was used to investigate capsular invasion. Moreover, RAS mutation further supports that this is a variant of follicular tumor with uncertain malig…
Is female-male mounting functional? An analysis of the temporal patterns of sexual behaviors in Japanese macaques
2019
Abstract In certain populations of Japanese macaques, adult females mount adult males in the context of heterosexual consortships (i.e., temporary but exclusive sexual associations between a male and a female). Previous research suggested that, in this primate species, female-male mounting (FMM) may be a behavioral adaptation. This functional hypothesis holds that FMM is a (special) courtship behaviour, or a (super) sexual solicitation, that serves the function of focusing the male's attention, preventing him from moving away, and expediting male-female mounting, in the context of high female competition for male mates. In this study, we aimed to test some of the proposed functional feature…
Smoking cessation opportunities in severe mental illness (tobacco intensive motivational and estimate risk — TIMER—): study protocol for a randomized…
2019
There is an increased risk of premature death in people with severe mental illness (SMI). Respiratory disorders and cardiovascular disease are leading causes of increased mortality rates in these patients, and tobacco consumption remains the most preventable risk factor involved. Developing new tools to motivate patients towards cessation of smoking is a high priority. Information on the motivational value of giving the lung age and prevention opportunities is unknown in this high-risk population. In the context of community care, screening and early detection of lung damage could potentially be used, together with mobile technology, in order to produce a prevention message, which may provi…
Stigmatized cohabitation in the Latvian region of the eastern Baltic littoral: nineteenth and twentieth centuries
2014
The social history of coresidence arrangements in the Latvian region suggests that forms of cohabitation without marriage were present in the Latvian population since the eighteenth century when empirical evidence became available. Before the twentieth century, however, these forms remained marginal and seldom involved choice. The subject of severe criticism until the 1960s–1970s, such forms become more widespread thereafter as the Latvian population began to exhibit many key features of a second demographic revolution. Post-Soviet censuses now suggest that such coresidence patterns in the Latvian population approach the levels of those in most western European states, including the Scandin…
Effects of reduced irradiance on hydraulic architecture and water relations of two olive clones with different growth potentials
2009
Abstract The hydraulic architecture and water relations of two olive genotypes, ‘Leccino Dwarf’ (LD) and ‘Leccino Minerva’ (LM) growing at two irradiance levels i.e. full sunlight irradiance (HI) and 50% sunlight irradiance (LI) were studied. The two clones showed similar plant hydraulic conductances (Kplant) and similar conductance of roots and leaves (Kroot and Kleaf) when growing at equal irradiance levels. However, both Kplant and Kroot were significantly lower in LI plants than in HI ones. On the contrary, Kleaf was unaffected by the light regime. One-year-old twigs of LI plants produced longer xylem conduits but lower average diameter of conduits and less conduits per unit xylem cross…
Exome and immune cell score analyses reveal great variation within synchronous primary colorectal cancers
2019
BACKGROUND: Approximately 4% of colorectal cancer (CRC) patients have at least two simultaneous cancers in the colon. Due to the shared environment, these synchronous CRCs (SCRCs) provide a unique setting to study colorectal carcinogenesis. Understanding whether these tumours are genetically similar or distinct is essential when designing therapeutic approaches. METHODS: We performed exome sequencing of 47 primary cancers and corresponding normal samples from 23 patients. Additionally, we carried out a comprehensive mutational signature analysis to assess whether tumours had undergone similar mutational processes and the first immune cell score analysis (IS) of SCRC to analyse the interplay…
Drug‐refractory myasthenia gravis: Clinical characteristics, treatments, and outcome
2022
[Objective] To describe the clinical characteristics and outcomes in patients with refractory myasthenia gravis (MG) and to determine the effectiveness and side effects of the drugs used for their treatment.
