Estrogenic Modulation of Longevity by Induction of Antioxidant Enzymes
2010
In many species including humans, females live longer than males. We and others have observed that mitochondria from females of Wistar rats and of OF1 mice produce half the amount of peroxide produced by males. We attributed this to a change in the expression of antioxidant, longevity-related genes. We have found that in those species in which females live longer than males, estrogens activate longevity-related genes, particularly antioxidant ones. It should be emphasized that estrogens do not act as antioxidants because of their phenolic ring but rather they act indirectly; that is, they behave as hormones and bind to estrogen receptors, which eventually leads to the upregulation of the ex…
Sinusoidal endothelial liver cells in vitro release endothelin — Augmentation by transforming growth factorβ and Kupffer cell-conditioned media
1991
Endothelin is the most potent vasoconstrictor peptide known today. Using a radioimmunoassay for endothelin, we measured immunoreactive endothelin in culture media of guinea pig sinusoidal endothelial liver cells and human umbilical vein endothelial cells. A time-dependent release of immunoreactive endothelin by confluent sinusoidal endothelial liver cells in culture was found. Sinusoidal endothelial liver cells produced similar amounts of immunoreactive endothelin as umbilical vein endothelial cells, about 900 pg/microgram DNA per 24 h. In the presence of transforming growth factor beta a dose-dependent increase of immunoreactive endothelin release was measured. The maximal increase of 50% …
Mathematical simulation of Doppler changes in late-onset smallness; progression patterns of cerebral and umbilical anomalies define two types of late…
2019
To evaluate the progression of Doppler abnormalities in fetuses with late-onset fetal smallness (SGA) that become growth restricted (FGR).524 Doppler examinations of the umbilical and cerebral arteries systems, belonging to 442 late-onset SGA fetuses after week 34, were studied, evaluating by means of the statistical difference with the respective abnormal centiles, the pattern of progression into abnormal Doppler values and the distribution and cumulative sum of Doppler anomalies according to the interval to delivery.Only one third (33.5%,Two thirds of late-onset fetal smallness occurs without hemodynamic changes. In half of the remaining cases an initial cerebral vasodilation defines a gr…
An experimental study on magnetic esophageal compression anastomosis in piglets.
2019
Abstract Introduction Fashioning a patent, watertight anastomosis in patients with esophageal atresia is a challenging task in pediatric surgery, particularly when performed under tension. A reproducible suture-less alternative would decrease operative time. We evaluated magnetic esophageal compression anastomoses in a novel bypass-loop swine model. Methods Eight-week-old piglets underwent thoracotomy to mobilize the esophagus at the carina to create a U-shaped loop. Custom-made 8 mm diameter Neodymium Magnets were inserted into the esophagus proximal and distal to the loop, then mated side-to-side at the future anastomosis site. Pigs were observed for 8 (n = 4), 10 (n = 6), and 12 (n = 2) …
LEIOMYOMA IN THE VESICOVAGINAL SPACE: A CASE REPORT
2010
The histological features of the leiomyomas located in the vesicovaginal space are similar despite their different anatomic origin. Therefore it is necessary to follow other criteria in order to determine the sites from which they originate. A case of an extravesical pedunculated leiomyoma of the bladder, which had grown in the vesicovaginal space, is reported. Today’s imaging studies and surgical findings are of great value in helping to localize the structure from which the tumour has arisen.

Clinicopathological and prognostic characterization of oral lichenoid disease and its main subtypes: A series of 384 cases
2019
Background To clinicopathologically characterize the diagnosis of oral lichenoid disease (OLD) and its main subtypes: oral lichen planus (OLP) and oral lichenoid lesion (OLL), in order to correctly asses their prognosis. Material and Methods Ambispective cohort study of 384 patients with diagnosis of OLD, based on pre-established clinical and histopathological criteria. We have analysed 272 (70.8%) women and 112 (29.2%), whose mean age was 57.1+/-11.8 years (range 21-90); minimum follow-up time was 36 months. A specific protocol was designed for this study, where we gathered the data of each patient, including malignant transformation. Results OLP was diagnosed in 229 cases (77.9%) and OLL …
Reflecting on Female Beauty: Cosmetic Surgery and (Dis)Empowerment
2018
This project aims to unwrap some of the complexities related to female beauty and the body. It reflects on the second wave radical feminist view that beautifying the female body serves to attract male approval via the male gaze, both of which are deeply entrenched in patriarchal power. This perspective positions cosmetic surgery as a disempowering act for women. In riposte, we turn to third wave liberal feminist ideas to engage with the narratives of ten participants who tell of their personal experiences of, and motivations for, undergoing a cosmetic intervention. We undertake an in-depth exploration of these lifeworld experiences and the interplay of subjectivity and intersubjectivity in …

Multifocal disseminated lipoatrophy secondary to intravenous corticosteroid administration in a patient with adrenal insufficiency.
2002
Multifocal disseminated lesions of circumscribed lipoatrophy have not been described as an adverse reaction of intravenously applied drugs. A unique patient with adrenal insufficiency is reported who received corticosteroids intravenously and then had multiple lesions develop that were similar to focal lipoatrophy as known to occur secondary to faulty intradermal injections of corticosteroids.
