The fertility of female immigrants to Europe from Christian and Muslim countries.

2020

Abstract This article investigates the fertility of female immigrants to Europe in relation to the characteristics of individual women (n=1,667), their countries of origin in Africa, Asia and Latin-America (n=68) and the European country where they reside (n=22), using the European Social Survey (ESS) collected between 2010 and 2017 (rounds 5 to 8). Many immigrants have fertility outcomes that converge towards the native fertility of their country of residence in Europe, a surprisingly strong factor. Immigrants from Muslim countries have higher fertility, though, and they compress their fertility over fewer years than immigrants from Christian countries. Multivariate estimates indicate that…

First report on fertility after allogeneic uterus transplantation

2010

Uterus transplantation may become the first available treatment for uterine factor infertility, which is due to the absence or malfunction of the uterus. Here we describe for the first time pregnancy after allogeneic uterus transplantation, as a proof of concept of uterine function in a transplanted uterus in a standardized animal model (rat) under immunosuppression.

Uterus Transplantation

2018

Uterus transplantation (UTx) has been successfully introduced as a treatment option for women with absolute uterine factor infertility (AUFI). AUFI representing approximately 3% to 5% of the female general population is linked to either congenital uterine agenesis (Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser syndrome), major congenital uterine malformation (hypoplastic uterus, fraction of bicornuate/unicornuate uterus), a surgically absent uterus, or an acquired condition (intrauterine adhesions, leiomyoma) linked to uterine malfunction that causes implantation failure or defect placentation. The world's first clinical uterus transplant was performed in 2000. However, a hysterectomy became necessary sho…

Preclinical report on allogeneic uterus transplantation in non-human primates

2013

Study question Is it possible to perform allogeneic uterus transplantation (UTx) with a donation from a live donor in a non-human primate species and what immunosuppression is needed to prevent rejection? Summary answer Allogeneic UTx in the baboon is a donor- and recipient-safe surgical procedure; immunosuppression with induction therapy and a triple protocol should be used. What is known already UTx may become a treatment for absolute uterine factor infertility. Autologous UTx models have been developed in non-human primates with reports on long-term survival of the uterine grafts. STUDY DESIGN, SIZEAND DURATION: This experimental study included 18 female baboons as uterus donors and 18 f…

Contemporary genetic technologies and female reproduction

2012

Background The Fifth Evian Annual Reproduction (EVAR) Workshop Meeting discussed knowledge regarding contemporary genetics in female reproduction. Methods Specialist reproductive medicine clinicians and geneticists delivered presentations based on published literature and current research. The content of this report is based on the expert presentations and subsequent group discussions that took place during this Workshop. Results Numerous ovarian genes with a role in infertility have been identified. Future challenges for genetic screening of patients, such as those with polycystic ovary syndrome, primary ovarian insufficiency or endometriosis, include the identification of high-throughput …

Hysteroscopy for Uterine Cavity Assessment in Infertility

2020

Abstract Hysteroscopy is a surgical procedure that allows a direct view of the uterine cavity and the tubular ostium. This procedure can be performed for both diagnostic and curative purposes. Hysteroscopy have several indications including the evaluation of abnormal uterine bleeding, infertility or intrauterine tumours identified by ultrasound. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the correlation between the diagnosis at admission and the intraoperative aspect of the uterine cavity following the hysteroscopic evaluation. We evaluated the patients admitted to the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Clinic of the Sibiu County Emergency Clinical Hospital during 1.01.2019-07.06.2019 who had the fol…

Massive Adenomyose bei einer Patientin mit Uterus septus completus

2006

Septate uterus is a malformation caused by the defective resorption of the Mullerian ducts. It may be incomplete, or -- less frequently -- complete. We present a case of a uterus septus completus with special emphasis on the endometrial changes. We describe a 46-year-old female patient (nullipara) with a known uterus septus suffering from hypermenorrhea. Sonography demonstrated a massively enlarged uterus with several nodes. Hysterectomy was performed and tissue specimens were routinely processed. Macroscopical examination revealed a 1 230 g-weight uterus septus completus. In particular, the myometrium was enlarged and exhibited a cystic cut surface with several nodes measuring up to 4.5 cm…

Uterine transplantation: one human case followed by a decade of experimental research in animal models

2011

Uterine transplantation (UTx) aims to treat unconditional uterine factor infertility by replacing a non-functioning or non-existing uterus. After one attempt of UTx in the human 10 years ago, intensive research has been performed. The results of these specific studies on surgical technique, ischaemia-reperfusion injury, immunosuppression and fertility are discussed.
