Assessment of endometrial volume by three-dimensional ultrasound prior to embryo transfer: clues to endometrial receptivity
1999
The aim of the present prospective study was to obtain quantitative data on endometrial volume by three-dimensional (3D) ultrasound at the time of embryo transfer in an in-vitro fertilization programme and to assess its value in predicting endometrial receptivity. The cycles (n = 72) were classified according to endometrial volume: group A2 ml, group B 2-4 ml, and group C4 ml. Comparisons of the groups showed that pregnancy and implantation rates were significantly lower (P0.05) in the group of patients with an endometrial volume2 ml. Furthermore, no pregnancy was achieved with an endometrial volume1 ml. It is concluded that endometrial volume by 3D transvaginal ultrasound may become a new …
Limited implantation success of direct-cleaved human zygotes: a time-lapse study.
2012
Objective To evaluate embryos with direct cleavage (≤5 hours) from two to three cells (DC2–3) and correlate this morphokinetic parameter to implantation and ongoing pregnancy. Design Clinical multicenter retrospective study. Setting Private in vitro fertilization (IVF) centers. Patient(s) From three clinics, a total of 979 treatments including 5,225 embryos using autologous or donated oocytes, of which 1,659 embryos were transferred. Intervention(s) None. Main Outcome Measure(s) Clinical pregnancy confirmed by ultrasound in week 7. Result(s) Of the total embryo cohort, 715 (13.7%) underwent direct cleavage from two to three cells, 1,659 embryos were transferred to recipients, and 109 of the…
The follicular hormonal profile in low-responder patients undergoing unstimulated cycles: is it hypoandrogenic?
2012
STUDY QUESTION What is the final hormonal milieu of pre-ovulatory follicles of low-responder (LR) patients undergoing unstimulated cycles? SUMMARY ANSWER Neither androgen secretion nor LH was impaired in pre-ovulatory follicles of LR women. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY Therapies currently used to improve ovarian response in LR women have an impact on the final hormonal follicular milieu, and these changes are believed to be partially responsible for determining the success rate in these women. Surprisingly, as far as we know, there is no report of the final hormonal profile of LR women undergoing unstimulated cycles or evidence that follicular androgen secretion in LR women is impaired. STUDY DESI…
Genetic polymorphisms of serotonin transporter and receptor 1A could influence success during embryo implantation and maintenance of pregnancy
2012
Objective To explore whether serotonin-related gene polymorphisms influence clinical outcomes of IVF treatment in recipients using donated oocytes. Design Nested case-control study. Setting University-affiliated infertility clinic. Patient(s) Two hundred forty-five women undergoing IVF treatment with donated oocytes. Intervention(s) None. Main Outcome Measure(s) Genotype and haplotype analysis of the serotonin transporter-linked polymorphic region (5-HTTLPR), rs1800532, rs6295, rs6313, and rs3813929, between recipients grouped according to the results of the oocyte donation for IVF treatment. Result(s) No differences were found between genotype distribution of the tryptophan hydroxylase 1, …
Antral follicle count (AFC) can be used in the prediction of ovarian response but cannot predict the oocyte/embryo quality or the in vitro fertilizat…
2007
To verify whether the antral follicle count (AFC) could predict ovarian response, oocyte/embryo quality, and IVF outcome.Prospective study.Instituto Universitario-Instituto Valenciano de Infertilidad, Valencia, Spain. One thousand seventy-four donors and 975 oocyte recipient cycles.Controlled ovarian hyperstimulation (COH), endometrial preparation, IVF/intracytoplasmic sperm injection, ET.COH and oocyte/embryo quality parameters and IVF outcome. We observed lower E(2) levels and fewer mature retrieved oocyte numbers among donors who showed an AFC that was10. These donors also showed significantly higher cancellation and no-donation rates; poor and/or insufficient response was the principal ca…
Binding of concanavalin A to the surface of unfertilized and fertilized ascidian eggs.
1973
STUDIES with certain carbohydrate-binding proteins of plant origin (as concanavalin A and wheat germ agglutinin) have indicated that some surface properties of embryonic1,2 and of virally transformed cells3–6 are different from those of adult cells. The interpretation of the differences in terms of structural organization of the cell surface is, however, still controversial (see for example refs. 7 and 8).
GnRH agonist versus recombinant HCG in an oocyte donation programme: a randomized, prospective, controlled, assessor-blind study.
2009
The use of gonadotrophin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonists for triggering ovulation remains controversial. The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the incidence of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) following GnRH agonist versus recombinant human chorionic gonadotrophin (HCG) as methods for triggering ovulation. A second aim was to compare the clinical outcome and embryo quality according to the two procedures. The cycle characteristics of 100 oocyte donors undergoing ovarian stimulation and IVF outcomes of their 100 oocyte recipients were analysed. Donors were prospectively randomized into two groups on the last day of ovarian stimulation: Group I received a single bolus …
Concomitant gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonist and menotropin treatment for the synchronized induction of multiple follicles.
1988
In an effort to overcome possible interference by endogenous gonadotropin-ovarian hormone dynamics, desensitization of the pituitary gonadotropins by a gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonist (GnRHa) was achieved in 12 women with repeatedly failed attempts at multiple follicular stimulation. Eight women were scheduled for in vitro fertilization (IVF) and embryo transfer (ET), and 4 for gamete intrafallopian transfer (GIFT). Stimulation failure was characterized by premature luteinization, poor estradiol (E2) response, or inadequate follicular growth. The agonist was administered by nasal spray 500 to 600 micrograms/day beginning on days 21 to 23 of the menstrual cycle. A rapid desensitizatio…
Similar endometrial development in oocyte donors treated with either high- or standard-dose GnRH antagonist compared to treatment with a GnRH agonist…
2005
Background This descriptive study evaluates the impact on endometrial development of standard and high doses of a GnRH antagonist in stimulated cycles compared with GnRH agonist and natural cycles. Methods Thirty-one oocyte donors were treated with a combination of rFSH and 0.25 mg/day ganirelix (standard dose), 2 mg/day ganirelix (high dose) or 0.6 mg/day buserelin (long protocol). Vaginal progesterone (200 mg/day) was administered in the luteal phase. Endometrial biopsies were performed 2 and 7 days after HCG administration. Additional biopsies were carried out in a subset of 12 subjects, 2 and 7 days following the LH peak of their previous natural cycle. Biopsies were evaluated histologi…
Effetti della concimazione sulla qualità dell'aglio coltivato in Sicilia. Effects of fertilization on the quality of garlic grown in Sicily.
2010
In order to expand this crop and to improve bulbs quality a study was carried out to evaluate different fertilization techniques. Four fertilization formulas were evaluated: 1) mineral fertilization commonly used by Paceco producers - pre-planting with 55, 110 and 80 kg ha-1 of N, P2O5 and K2O - post planting with 47 and 46 kg ha-1 of N and K2O; 2) organic fertilization with an organic mix - pre-planting with 320 and 240 kg ha-1 of N and P2O5; 3) mineral fertilization - pre-planting with 40, 70 and 100 kg ha-1 of N, P2O5 and K2O - post-planting with 80 kg ha-1 of N half at 3-4 leaves and half at bulbs formation; 4) only post-planting fertilization with 52 and 184 kg ha-1 of N and K2O, half …
