Seeing Some One

2018

This paper outlines a light approach to heavy issues of consciousness. The basic claim is that human minds are very much tailored to the requirements of action perception, that is, to what people see when they watch other people acting. I argue that the third-person perspective entailed in action perception offers an easy and more direct access to such enigmatic things as selfhood, intentionality, and agency than the first-person perspective does. In a sense, we get these things for free when we study action perception. I do not claim that the study of action perception can solve (or even dissolve) the enigmata entailed in consciousness. I do claim, however, that it sheds new light on relat…

N-acetylcysteine protects against age-related increase in oxidized proteins in mouse synaptic mitochondria.

1997

Since it has been proposed that oxidized protein accumulation plays a critical role in brain aging, we have investigated the effect of a thiolic antioxidant on protein carbonyl content in synaptic mitochondria from female OF-1 mice. At 48 weeks of age, a control group was fed standard food pellets and another group received pellets containing 0.3% (w/w) of N-acetylcysteine. A 24-week treatment resulted in a significant decrease in protein carbonyl content in synaptic mitochondria of the N-acetylcysteine-treated animals as compared to age-matched controls.

Dithiothreitol prevents age-associated decrease in oocyte/conceptus viability in vitro.

1998

The present study was designed to ascertain whether the negative effects on reproductive potential of post-ovulatory ageing in vitro of oocytes can be prevented by antioxidant therapy. Mouse metaphase II (MII) oocytes were aged in vitro for 12 h prior to insemination in the presence of varying concentrations of L-ascorbic acid, 6-methoxy-2,5,7,8-tetramethylchromane-2-carboxylic acid (Trolox), L-cystine dihydrochloride, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), beta-mercaptoethanol and DL-dithiothreitol (DTT). In-vitro ageing of oocytes was associated with lower fertilization rate, higher proportion of concepti exhibiting cellular fragmentation at 24 h post-insemination and lower percentage of…

Muscle adenylate kinase in Duchenne muscular dystrophy

1986

Abstract On the basis of electrophoretic and enzyme inhibition studies it was postulated that an aberrant adenylate kinase occurs in muscle and serum of patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (Schirmer, R.H. and Thuma, E. (1972) Biochim. Biophys. Acta 268, 92–97; Hamada, M. et al. (1981) Biochim. Biophys. Acta 660, 227–237; Hamada et al. (1985) J. Biol. Chem. 260, 11595–11602. On the basis of the following results we conclude that Duchenne muscular dystrophy patients do not possess an unusual adenylate kinase isoenzyme. (1) In muscle biopsies from five Duchenne patients, the electrophoretic mobility of adenylate kinase and the inhibition of the enzyme by P 1 , P 5 -di(adenosine-5′)pentap…

Effects of oxidative modifications induced by the glycation of bovine serum albumin on its structure and on cultured adipose cells

2005

Non-enzymatic glycosylation (glycation) and oxidative damages represent major research areas insofar as such modifications of proteins are frequently observed in numerous states of disease. Albumin undergoes structural and functional alterations, caused by increased glycosylation during non insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, which is closely linked with the early occurrence of vascular complications. In this work, we first characterized structural modifications induced by the glycation of bovine serum albumin (BSA). A pathophysiological effect of glycated BSA was identified in primary cultures of human adipocytes as it induces an accumulation of oxidatively modified proteins in these cell…

Musculoskeletal examination in young athletes and non-athletes:the Finnish Health Promoting Sports Club (FHPSC) study

2018

ObjectivesTo determine the inter-rater repeatability of a musculoskeletal examination and to compare findings between adolescent athletes and non-athletes in Finland.MethodsIn this cross-sectional study, a musculoskeletal examination assessing posture, mobility and movement control was carried out by a sports and exercise medicine physician on 399 athletes aged 14–17 years and 177 non-athletes. Within 2 weeks another sports and exercise medicine physician repeated the examination for 41 adolescents to test the inter-rater repeatability.ResultsIn total, 10 of the 11 tests performed had at least moderate inter-rater reliability (κ ≥0.4 or percentage agreement >80%). Athletes more often tha…

Triatleters indre monolog : en studie som tar for seg hva som kjennetegner triatleters indre monolog under en konkurransesetting og om det er forskje…

2016

Masteroppgave i idrettsvitenskap - Universitetet i Agder 2016 The aim of this study is to survey the use of self-talk at triathletes. Are there any differences between the use of self-talk at triathletes with a high level of performance, compared to triathletes at a lower level of performance? There were a total of 20 participants in the study, where ten of them were athletes from the Norwegian national team of triathlon. These ten represented the participants of a high level of performance. The remaining ten, were club triathletes who represented the group with a lower level of performance. There were completed both frekvency, correlation- and regressionanalyses, and the result can be unde…

Toppdommerrollen i fotball : sammenhengen mellom angst og mental tøffhet og toppdommeres subjektive opplevelse av press i norsk fotball

2016

Masteroppgave i idrettsvitenskap - Universitetet i Agder 2016 Mental toughness, anxiety and pressure are well-used terms within sports, even though it can be difficult to understand the meaning of them. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between anxiety (cognitive- and somatic anxiety and self-confidence) and mental toughness, and top-class referees’ subjective experience on pressure as a soccer official. 183 top-class referees answered an online questionnaire. Mental toughness was measured by using the SMTQ and anxiety by using the CSAI-2. Of all the referees included in this study, 97.2% had been active footballers themselves, 44.3% had played on a high level. There…

Analysis of the way the reader of FHM is invited to relate to women

2012

Miesten lifestyle -lehtien negatiiviset naisrepresentaatiot ovat herättäneet huolta tutkijoiden ja feministien keskuudessa jo muutaman vuosikymmenen ajan. Lehtien sukupuolten välille rakentamia suhteita on kuitenkin tutkittu verrattain vähän, ja niiden lukijapositiot ovat jääneet yleisemmän maskuliinisuuden tarkastelun varjoon. Näiden tarkastelu täydentäisi ja syventäisi sukupuolirepresentaatioiden tutkimusta ja antaisi paremman pohjan lehtien kulttuuristen vaikutusten arviointiin. Tämän tutkielman tarkoituksena on täyttää aukko ja selvittää, miten miesten lifestyle -lehdet kutsuvat lukijaansa suhtautumaan lehdessä representoituihin naisiin. Tutkielman teoreettinen viitekehys tulee kriittis…
