Constraining the neutrino emission of gravitationally lensed Flat-Spectrum Radio Quasars with ANTARES data
2014
This paper proposes to exploit gravitational lensing effects to improve the sensitivity of neutrino telescopes to the intrinsic neutrino emission of distant blazar populations. This strategy is illustrated with a search for cosmic neutrinos in the direction of four distant and gravitationally lensed Flat-Spectrum Radio Quasars. The magnification factor is estimated for each system assuming a singular isothermal profile for the lens. Based on data collected from 2007 to 2012 by the ANTARES neutrino telescope, the strongest constraint is obtained from the lensed quasar B0218+357, providing a limit on the total neutrino luminosity of this source of 1.08×10^46 erg s-1. This limit is about one o…
Diffractive corneal inlay for presbyopia
2017
[EN] A conceptually new type of corneal inlays for a customized treatment of presbyopia is presented. The diffractive inlay consists on a small aperture disc having an array of micro-holes distributed inside the open zones of a Fresnel zone plate. In this way, the central hole of the disc lets pass the zero order diffraction and produces an extension of the depth of far focus of the eye, while the diffracted light through the holes in the periphery produce the near focus. Additionally, the micro-holes in the inlay surface fulfill the essential requirement of allowing the flow of nutrients through it to the cells of the corneal stroma. Theoretical and optical-bench experimental results for t…
Imaging Performance of a Diffractive Corneal Inlay for Presbyopia in a Model Eye
2019
[EN] In this work we evaluated the imaging properties of the Diffractive Corneal Inlay (DCI), a novel type of corneal implant working by diffraction that we proposed for the treatment of presbyopia. ZEMAX OpticStudio software was employed for the numerical assessment, with simulations performed in a human-based eye model. In the ray tracing analysis, we used the Modulation Transfer Function (MTF), the Area under the MTF (AMTF), and the Point Spread Function (PSF). The theoretical performance of the DCI under different situations was evaluated in comparison with a commercially available pinhole based corneal inlay. Finally, real images were obtained experimentally in vitro in a model eye wit…
Through-focus response of multifocal intraocular lenses evaluated with a spatial light modulator
2012
A new testing technique based on the use of a liquid crystal spatial light modulator (SLM) is proposed to analyze the optical quality of multifocal intraocular lenses (MIOLs). Different vergences and decentrations of the incident beam can be programmed onto the SLM in order to record the point spread function (PSF) for different object positions. From these axial PSFs, the through-focus modulation transfer function is computed. Because there are no moving parts in the experimental setup, this method is fast and versatile to assess MIOLs. Experimental results confirm the potential of the proposed method.
A Square-Planar Dinickel(II) Complex with a Noninnocent Dinucleating Oxamate Ligand: Evidence for a Ligand Radical Species
1999
[EN] The new bimetallic nickel(II) compound (PPh4)4[Ni2(2)]·6H2O (3), where H8[2] stands for N,N',N'',N'''-1,2,4,5-benzene-tetrayltetrakis(oxamic acid), has been synthesized and its crystal structure determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The structure of 3 consists of [Ni2(n4:n4-2)]4- anions, tetraphenylphosphonium cations, and water molecules. Facile one-electron oxidation of the square-planar diamagnetic dinickel(II) complex [Ni2(n4:n4-2)]4- generates the metallo-radical species [Ni2(n4:n4-2·+)]3- with characteristic intra-ligand ¿cation radical transitions in the visible region (475-550 nm) as well as a typical quasi-isotropic EPR signal at g ¿ 2.0.
Novel Iron(II) Microporous Spin-Crossover Coordination Polymers with Enhanced Pore Size
2012
In this Communication, we report the synthesis and characterization of novel Hofmann-like spin-crossover porous coordination polymers of composition {Fe(L)[M(CN)4]}·G [L = 1,4-bis(4-pyridylethynyl)- benzene and MII = Ni, Pd, and Pt]. The spin-crossover properties of the framework are closely related to the number and nature of the guest molecules included in the pores.
The positioning system of the ANTARES Neutrino Telescope
2012
The ANTARES neutrino telescope, located 40km off the coast of Toulon in the Mediterranean Sea at a mooring depth of about 2475m, consists of twelve detection lines equipped typically with 25 storeys. Every storey carries three optical modules that detect Cherenkov light induced by charged secondary particles (typically muons) coming from neutrino interactions. As these lines are flexible structures fixed to the sea bed and held taut by a buoy, sea currents cause the lines to move and the storeys to rotate. The knowledge of the position of the optical modules with a precision better than 10cm is essential for a good reconstruction of particle tracks. In this paper the ANTARES positioning sys…
Phase behaviour of Ag2CrO4 under compression: Structural, vibrational, and optical properties
2013
We have performed an experimental study of the crystal structure, lattice dynamics, and optical properties of silver chromate (Ag2CrO4) at ambient temperature and high pressures. In particular, the crystal structure, Raman-active phonons, and electronic band gap have been accurately determined. When the initial orthorhombic Pnma Ag2CrO4 structure (phase I) is compressed up to 4.5 GPa, a previously undetected phase (phase II) has been observed with a 0.95% volume collapse. The structure of phase II can be indexed to a similar orthorhombic cell as phase I, and the transition can be considered to be an isostructural transition. This collapse is mainly due to the drastic contraction of the a ax…
Synthesis of Densely Functionalised 5-Halogen-1,3-oxazin-2-ones byHalogen-Mediated Regioselective Cyclisation of N-Cbz-ProtectedPropargylic Amines: A…
2013
A very efficient synthesis of 5-halogen-1,3-oxazin-2-ones has been accomplished by the halocyclisation reaction of chiral nonracemic N-carbobenzyloxy (N-Cbz)-protected propargylic amines by using I-2, Br-2 and Cl-2 as electrophile sources. The nature of the halogen influences the reaction time and yield. However, in all cases the reaction is totally regioselective taking place through a 6-endo-dig process regardless of the nature of the halogen and of the substituents in the starting material. To rationalise the experimental results, theoretical studies at the B3LYP/6-311G* level have been performed.
