Radiological analysis, operative management and functional outcome of open book pelvic lesions: a 13-year cohort study.

Abstract We present the clinical and radiological outcome of a 13-year cohort study of 38 open book pelvic lesions. All patients were treated in one Level I Trauma centre. In the posterior pelvis, sacro-iliac diastasis was seen in 31 patients, sacral fracture in 7. In all patients with sacro-iliac diastasis, the pubic bone was inferiorly displaced on the primary ap pelvic overview on the side of injury. All but one patient was treated with open reduction and internal fixation of the symphysis pubis. Operative management of epidural tumors of the spine

Seventy-two patients with neoplastic involvement of the vertebral column were operated on between 1986 and 1991. In the course of 79 operations anterior decompression and stabilization alone were performed in 3 cases, while ventrodorsal spondylodesis was carried out in 10 individuals. The remainder of the patients underwent exclusively dorsal decompression and stabilization, mainly with the Cotrel-Dubousset instrumentation (CDI). No external spinal support was required following posterior fixation by CDI alone or in combination with ventral spondylodesis. Fixation pattern analysis with microperimetry in nystagmus patients

Subjective fixation disparity affected by dynamic asymmetry, resting vergence, and nonius bias.

PURPOSE This study was undertaken to investigate how subjectively measured fixation disparity can be explained by (1) the convergent-divergent asymmetry of vergence dynamics (called dynamic asymmetry) for a disparity vergence step stimulus of 1° (60 arc min), (2) the dark vergence, and (3) the nonius bias. METHODS Fixation disparity, dark vergence, and nonius bias were measured subjectively using nonius lines. Dynamic vergence step responses (both convergent and divergent) were measured objectively. AbstractWe report on a patient who had undergone female-to-male transsexual surgery and subsequent phalloplasty by means of a free latissimus dorsi muscle graft with pudendal nerve coaptation elsewhere 10 years ago. The surgical strategy for implantation and osseous fixation of a penile prosthesis is described. The characteristics of a treadmill and the environment where it is based could influence the user’s gaze and have an effect on their running kinematics and lower limb impacts. The aim of this study was to identify the effect of visual focus on spatio-temporal parameters and lower limb kinematics during treadmill running. Twenty six experienced runners ran at 3.33 m s−1 on a treadmill under two visual conditions, either looking ahead at a wall or looking down at the treadmill visual display. Imaging the visual autokinetic illusion with fMRI

During fixation of a stationary, dim light-emitting diode (LED) in complete darkness, a subtle, apparent motion is perceived which is called autokinesis. This autokinetic illusion increases with increasing fixation time. Eleven healthy subjects were examined by fMRI while fixating an LED in darkness for 35 s. BOLD signal changes of the first and the second half of the fixation period were compared. While the stimulus was the same for both periods, perception differed in that autokinesis was more pronounced in the second half. Fixation suppression of optokinetic nystagmus modulates cortical visual-vestibular interaction.

Water activation positron emission tomography and statistical group analysis were used to evaluate differences in activation-deactivation patterns during small-field visual motion stimulation, eliciting rightward optokinetic nystagmus and its fixation suppression in 12 healthy volunteers. Clavicle aseptic nonunion: is there a place for cortical allogenic strut graft?

Abstract We investigated functional and radiological outcome in 57 cases of midshaft clavicle nonunion treated with open reduction and internal fixation with plate and screws over a 13 year-period. Intercalary bone graft was used in 42 patients; opposite autologous strut graft was used in 31 cases to provide mechanical support to the host bone. Patients were analysed using chart and radiological review and assessed with DASH questionnaire obtained at the latest follow-up. 37 patients were male while 20 were females, with a mean age of 35 years (63–17).
