XMM-Newton observations of the young open cluster Blanco 1. II. X-ray time variability and flares.

We study the X-ray variability of the young open cluster Blanco 1 observed with the EPIC camera on board the XMM-Newton X-ray observatory. The time coverage of EPIC observations has allowed us to address short time scale (hours) variability, while the comparison with previous ROSAT observations has allowed us to investigate the variability on time scale of six years. On the time scale of hours, dM stars of the cluster are more variable than solar-mass stars. The main features of X-ray light curves in dM stars appear to be essentially flare-like events with a typical duration of the order of a few ks, while dF-dG stars show smooth variations. Effects of Flaring Activity on Dynamics of Accretion Disks in YSOs

We investigate the effects of strong flares on the accretion phenomena in YSOs. Among all classical assumptions, the model accounts magnetic-field oriented thermal conduction. We study the global dynamics of the system for two positions of the heating release triggering the flare.

The cool Galactic R Coronae Borealis variable DY Persei

2005

Results of first CCD photometry during the recent deep light decline, and high-resolution spectroscopy, are presented for DY Persei. The spectra show variable blueshifted features in the sodium D lines. The C  lines are strong whereas neutron- capture elements are not enhanced. The isotopic 13 CN(2, 0) lines relative to 12 CN are of similar strength with those for the carbon star U Hya. All these confirm the RCB nature of DY Per and the existence of ejected clouds. At least two clouds are revealed at −197.3 and −143.0 km s −1 . A star was detected about 0. 4t o the west and 2 . 5 to the north from DY Per. Multi-frequency properties of synthetic blazar radio light curves within the shock-in-jet scenario

Blazars are among the most powerful extragalactic objects, as a sub-class of active galactic nuclei. They launch relativistic jets and their emitted radiation shows strong variability across the entire electro-magnetic spectrum. BeppoSAX observation of a large long-duration X-ray flare from UX Arietis

We present two X-ray observations of the RS CVn binary system UX Arietis performed with BeppoSAX in August 1997 and August 1998. A large flare lasting for about 1 day was detected during the rst observation, while the star was quiescent during the second one. Hard X-ray emission up to50 keV was detected in the PDS instrument during the rise and at the peak of the flare. Time-resolved spectroscopy of the flare with the LECS and MECS detectors shows that temperatures as high as 100 MK were reached at the flare peak; such high temperatures are responsible for the high-energy tail seen in the PDS. A fast multi-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic formulation of the transition region adaptive conduction (TRAC) method

We have demonstrated that the Transition Region Adaptive Conduction (TRAC) method permits fast and accurate numerical solutions of the field-aligned hydrodynamic equations, successfully removing the influence of numerical resolution on the coronal density response to impulsive heating. This is achieved by adjusting the parallel thermal conductivity, radiative loss, and heating rates to broaden the transition region (TR), below a global cutoff temperature, so that the steep gradients are spatially resolved even when using coarse numerical grids. X-ray flares of the young planet host DS Tuc A

Abridged. We observed the 40 Myr old star DS Tuc A with XMM-Newton and recorded two X-ray bright flares, with the second event occurring about 12 ks after the first one. Their duration from the rise to the end of the decay was of about 8-10 ks in soft X-rays (0.3-10 keV). The flares were also recorded in the band 200-300 nm with the UVM2 filter of the Optical Monitor. The duration of the flares in UV was about 3 ks. The observed delay between the peak in the UV band and in X-rays is a probe of the heating phase followed by the evaporation and increase of density and emission measure of the flaring loop. The coronal plasma temperature at the two flare peaks reached 54-55 MK. The diagnostics …

Long-term monitoring of mrk 501 for its very high energy γ emission and a flare in 2011 october

"As one of the brightest active blazars in both X-ray and very high energy γ -ray bands, Mrk 501, is very useful for" "physics associated with jets from active galactic nuclei. The ARGO-YBJ experiment has monitored Mrk 501 for γ - rays above 0.3 TeV since 2007 November. The largest flare since 2005 was observed from 2011 October and lasted until about 2012 April. X-ray observations of the young open cluster Blanco 1. The XMM-Newton view

We present the analysis of a 50 ks XMM-Newton observation of the young, metal-rich open cluster Blanco 1. In the sum of EPIC MOS 1, MOS 2 and pn data we have detected 190 X-ray sources, 36 of them having as cluster member as optical counterparts. We have analyzed the X-ray spectra and time variability of the light curves of the cluster sources. Coronal spectra of solar mass stars are characterized by two thermal components at 0.3 and 1.0 keV, with comparable emission measure. One late-A type member shows a coronal spectrum remarkably different from that of solar-type members, thus suggesting an intrinsic difference in the corona production mechanism.
