MEMORIE DAGLI SCAVI PER UN'ARCHEOLOGIA DELLA LETTERATURA IN GESUALDO BUFALINO
2022
The essay reflects on the lexical dissemination of terms belonging to the metaphorical area of 'recovery,' 'rebirth,' and 'rediscovery' in Bufalino's work beginning with Diceria dell'untore, in order to try to demonstrate the legacy of a private experience, the one related to the writing of his dissertation during the years of war and illness, in the transfigured one of literary reworking.
Riflessi dell'etnomusicologia in Sicilia: la "Due canzoni natalizie etnee trascritte dalla memoria per 11 strumenti" (1982-83) di Francesco Pennisi
2022
The text starts from some reflections on ethnomusicological research in Sicily and on the relationship between cultured composers and music of oral tradition. In particular, the genesis and compositional structure of the "Two Etna Christmas Songs transcribed from memory" of 1982-83 is reconstructed.
Dual-beam confocal light-sheet microscopy via flexible acousto-optic deflector
2019
Confocal detection in digital scanned laser light-sheet fluorescence microscopy (DSLM) has been established as a gold standard method to improve image quality. The selective line detection of a complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor camera (CMOS) working in rolling shutter mode allows the rejection of out-of-focus and scattered light, thus reducing background signal during image formation. Most modern CMOS have two rolling shutters, but usually only a single illuminating beam is used, halving the maximum obtainable frame rate. We report on the capability to recover the full image acquisition rate via dual confocal DSLM by using an acoustooptic deflector. Such a simple solution enables us t…
Analysis of image formation with a photon scanning tunneling microscope
1996
International audience; The photon scanning tunneling microscope (PSTM) is based on the frustration of a total internal reflected beam by the end of an optical fiber. Until now it has been used to obtain topographic information, generally for smooth samples. We report theoretical as well as experimental results on the observation of a step on a quartz substrate with the PSTM. These results demonstrate the effects on image formation of the distance between the fiber tip and the sample surface, the orientation of the incident beam with respect to the step, the polarization, and the coherence of the light. Good agreement exists between numerical simulations and experiments. We show that a pert…
A multilight approach for documenting and modeling the appearance of large cultural heritage objects
2022
In recent years, Computer Vision has played a major role in the investigation of sur-face appearance, particularly with the introduction of image-based rendering algorithms. Reflectance transformation Imaging (RTI) is one of these approaches. The RTI is a multi-light imaging technique that involves taking a series of images of an item using a stationary camera, while the location of the incident light varies in each photograph. Thanks to the information gathered from this type of acquisition, which is also defined as a Multi-light Image Collection (MLIC), it is possible to model the angular reflectance of a surface. The RTI is frequently employed in the documentation and study of architectu…
Modélisation d'images agronomiques - application a la reconnaissance d'adventices par imagerie pour une pulvérisation localisée
2009
Plant (crop and weed) identification is a very active field of research in agriculture since the reinforcement of European laws about pesticide applications for a site-specific management of spraying practices. A new crop/weed simulation model was developed to allow the evaluation of crop/weed spatial identification methods from imaging. Considering multiples agronomic parameters – crop location, weed infestation rate, weed spatial distribution – the first step of this model allows the simulation of an infested crop field. Then, in a second step, a world to camera transformation is applied to allow every kind of picture (with or without perspective effect). The validation of this model was …
CEFLES2: The remote sensing component to quantify photosynthetic efficiency from the leaf to the region by measuring sun-induced fluorescence in the …
2009
The CEFLES2 campaign during the Carbo Europe Regional Experiment Strategy was designed to provide simultaneous airborne measurements of solar induced fluorescence and CO2 fluxes. It was combined with extensive ground-based quantification of leaf- and canopy-level processes in support of ESA's Candidate Earth Explorer Mission of the "Fluorescence Explorer" (FLEX). The aim of this campaign was to test if fluorescence signal detected from an airborne platform can be used to improve estimates of plant mediated exchange on the mesoscale. Canopy fluorescence was quantified from four airborne platforms using a combination of novel sensors: (i) the prototype ai…
Turning Migration Disadvantage into Educational Advantage. Autobiographies of Successful Students with an Immigrant Background
2018
The article focuses on unexpected pathways of successful students with an immigrant background, in order to investigate the implication of this phenomenon from a theoretical, methodological and empirical point of view. After a review of the main sociological studies on “immigrant optimism” towards educational success, I will reflect on biographical approach, particularly suitable to study this topic. A on-going research project based on the collection of educational autobiographies of successful immigrant-origin students, attending upper secondary schools in Northern Italy, is presented. Then, the story of Destiny, a 16 years-old girl with Moroccan origin, is used as a case study to explore…
A passive solid sensor for in-situ colorimetric estimation of the presence of ketamine in illicit drug samples
2017
Abstract A colorimetric sensor has been developed for the presumptive detection of ketamine in illicit drug samples. The sensor has been prepared by immobilized the reagent Co(SCN) 2 into polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). When exposed to solutions of ketamine at a basic pH, the sensor color changes from brown to blue-purple due to the diffusion of the analyte molecules to the polymeric matrix and subsequent interaction with the reagent particles. The sensor enables the visual identification of amounts of drug as low as 30 μg in a few minutes. Quantification of ketamine is also possible through the measurement of the absorbance in diffuse reflectance mode. Under the proposed conditions, linear re…
Cotton swabs supported in-situ assay for quaternary ammonium compounds residues in effluents and surfaces
2018
Abstract Cellulose paper and cotton swabs have been tested as sampling, reaction and measurement media for quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) using the reagent Chromo Azurol S in the presence of aluminum cations (CAS-Al). On the basis of the results obtained a new method is proposed for the analysis of QACs in water samples which only entails the successive immersion of swabs into 1 mL of the samples, 1 mL of a solution of CAS-Al for the formation of a ternary blue complex, and 1 mL of water to remove the excess of reagent. The method can be used for the visual on site detection of QACs in effluents, as well as for their quantification within the 3.62–36.2 mg/L range through the direct me…
