Pinned hybrid glass-flax composite laminates aged in salt-fog environment: Mechanical durability

2019

The aim of the present paper is to study the mechanical performance evolution of pinned hybrid glass-flax composite laminates under environment aging conditions. Hybrid glass-flax fibers/epoxy pinned laminates were exposed to salt-spray fog environmental conditions up to 60 days. With the purpose of assessing the relationship between mechanical performances and failure mechanisms at increasing aging time, single lap joints at varying joint geometry (i.e., hole diameter D and hole distance E from free edge) were characterized after 0 days (i.e., unaged samples), 30 days, and 60 days of salt-fog exposition. Based on this approach, the property&ndash

Physicomechanical properties of composites from recycled polyethylene and linen yarn production wastes

1999

The possibilities of utilizing wastes of linen thread production (chaffs, spinning and roving losses) in recycled polyolefin composites have been investigated. The wastes were mixed with recycled polyethylenes (produced from domestic and industrial film production wastes). The physicomechanical properties (tensile strength, bending and tensile moduli, and water resistance) and the fluidity (melt flow-behavior index) for systems with a different filler content are estimated. Almost all the composite materials obtained have satisfactory fluidity (melt flow-behavior index is not lower than 0.07–0.15 dg/min). For all types of the composites, a slight increase in tensile strength and a considera…

Thermodesorption of LB-multilayers of metal stearates

1991

Thermodesorption of stearate multilayers containing different metal ions was investigated by Interference-enhanced Reflection (IeR) and Nomarsky microscopy. Heating of samples in air leads to desorption of stearyl chains and to formation of metal oxide clusters. A new approach to build controlled structures was made by preparing a surface with neighbouring hydrophobic and hydrophilic areas. It is shown that arranging inorganic particles in a predetermined way is possible.

Semiflexible Polymers in the Bulk and Confined by Planar Walls

2016

Semiflexible polymers in solution under good solvent conditions can undergo an isotropic-nematic transition. This transition is reminiscent of the well-known entropically-driven transition of hard rods described by Onsager’s theory, but the flexibility of the macromolecules causes specific differences in behavior, such as anomalous long wavelength fluctuations in the ordered phase, which can be understood by the concept of the deflection length. A brief review of the recent progress in the understanding of these problems is given, summarizing results obtained by large-scale molecular dynamics simulations and density functional theory. These results include also the interaction of semiflexib…

Compatibility of a statistical copolymer P(EMA-co-MMA) with PS and PMMA

1999

The compositions of coexisting phases and the interface widths in blends of a statistical copolymer of poly(ethylmethacrylate-co -methylmethacrylate) (P(EMA 1-x -co-MMA x )) and a deuterated polystyrene (PS(D)) as well as a deuterated poly(methylmethacrylate) (PMMA(D)) have been investigated by neutron reflectometry (NR). Interaction parameters are calculated from the compositions of coexisting phases and the interface width values. Utilizing a novel two dimensional scheme for graphical representation of the interaction parameters, the results are in very good agreement with studies on the interaction parameters for PS/PMMA, PS/PEMA and PEMA/PMMA blends. In particular, χ EMA/MMA deduced fro…

Physical properties of virgin-recycled ABS blends: Effect of post-consumer content and of reprocessing cycles

2012

Abstract Virgin/post-consumer ABS (pc-ABS) blends were re-processed and re-formed up to three times. The effect of pc-ABS content and of reprocessing cycles on the physical properties of the prepared blends was evaluated by mechanical tests (tensile, flexural and impact tests) and by rheological and thermo-mechanical measurements. The processability of pc-ABS blends was not substantially different by that of virgin ABS up to two recycling steps even if the third one induced a slightly decrease of viscosity, more remarkable on increasing the pc-ABS content. The mechanical and thermo-mechanical properties of the samples worsened on increasing the level of pc-ABS and after each reprocessing op…

An Innovative Treatment Based on Sodium Citrate for Improving the Mechanical Performances of Flax Fiber Reinforced Composites

2021

The goal of this paper is to evaluate the effectiveness of a cost-effective and eco-friendly treatment based on the use of sodium citrate (Na3C6H5O7) on the mechanical properties of flax fiber reinforced composites. To this scope, flax fibers were soaked in mildly alkaline solutions of the sodium salt at different weight concentration (i.e., 5%, 10% and 20%) for 120 h at 25 °C. The modifications on fibers surface induced by the proposed treatment were evaluated through Fourier transform infrared analysis (FTIR), whereas scanning electron microscope (SEM) and helium pycnometer were used to obtain useful information about composites morphology. The effect of the concentration of the treating …

2019

In this study, the structural behavior of small-scale wood beams externally strengthened with various fiber strengthened polymer (FRP) composites (i.e., flax FRP (FFRP), basalt FRP (BFRP), E-glass FRP (“E” stands for electrical resistance, GFRP) and their hybrid FRP composites (HFRP) with different fiber configurations) were investigated. FRP strengthened wood specimens were tested under bending and the effects of different fiber materials, thicknesses and the layer arrangements of the FRP on the flexural behavior of strengthened wood beams were discussed. The beams strengthened with flax FRP showed a higher flexural loading capacity in comparison to the beams with basalt FRP. Flax FRP prov…

Longitudinal Flexure as a Method for Determining the Flexural Strength of Composite Materials

2004

A method is presented for determining the flexural strength of composites from tests on pinned specimens in axial compression. This scheme is close to the so-called Euler buckling model, but the load is applied eccentrically, and the bar is bent practically from the beginning of loading. An analytical model is proposed for calculating the flexural stress in longitudinal flexure of a thin bar in the case of large displacements. The problem is solved in elliptic integrals of the first and second kinds. The analytical model shows an excellent agreement with experiments. The results obtained are compared with experimental tension data. A device is also designed for testing composite bars in lon…

Shear-Thinning in Oligomer Melts—Molecular Origins and Applications

2021

We investigate the molecular origin of shear-thinning in melts of flexible, semiflexible and rigid oligomers with coarse-grained simulations of a sheared melt. Entanglements, alignment, stretching and tumbling modes or suppression of the latter all contribute to understanding how macroscopic flow properties emerge from the molecular level. In particular, we identify the rise and decline of entanglements with increasing chain stiffness as the major cause for the non-monotonic behaviour of the viscosity in equilibrium and at low shear rates, even for rather small oligomeric systems. At higher shear rates, chains align and disentangle, contributing to shear-thinning. By performing simulations …
