A new record of the desert truffle Picoa lefebvrei in Saudi Arabia
2012
A new record of Picoa lefebvrei from Saudi Arabia is reported accompanied by notes on its taxonomy, ecology, and distribution.
New distributive and ecological data on Tuber magnatum (Tuberaceae) in Italy
2014
The recent discovery of natural truffle grounds of the prized Tuber magnatum Pico in Sicily (southern Italy) allows to up-to-date the ecology and distribution of this choice edible mushroom in Italy and opens new economic opportunities in rural areas traditionally suffering from the economic point of view. The two new localities reported expand the southern range border of the species in Italy and Europe.
New antimicrobial peptides from Tirmania pinoyi and Terfezia boudieri in the struggle against antibiotic resistance
2017
Antibiotic resistance of common pathogenic microorganisms is a topic of great concern that has finally received media attention and entered into the political agenda of world leaders. Drug-resistant bacteria are cause of thousands of deaths worldwide, then there is an urgent need for new antimicrobials, otherwise we risk losing the ability to control effectively the infectious diseases. Such emergence can be faced looking also at not usual source of antimicrobial agents, for example medicinal mushrooms. With the objective to tackle Gram-positive and Gram-negative pathogens, we focused on two edible desert truffles mushrooms Tirmania pinoyi and Terfezia boudieri as origin of new antimicrobia…
The recruitment of scallops (and beyond) by two different artificial collectors (Gulf of Taranto, Mediterranean Sea)
2015
This study provides for the first time an evaluation of the natural availability of scallop seeds along the coastal area of Taranto (Mediterranean Sea, Southern Italy). To select the best artificial collectors to harvest scallop seeds in this area, cylindrical collectors (Cyl) were compared to traditional 'Japanese-style onion bags' (Bag) across three sites. Scallops represented 26.6% of total bivalve recruitment among all collectors (782 ± 331 ind. m-2). The most recruited scallops were Flexopecten glaber and Mimachlamys varia. The white (F. glaber) and black scallops (M. varia) were abundant at all three sites, while the queen scallop, Aequipecten opercularis, was only found at one site. …
Structural architecture and active deformation pattern in the northern sector of the Aeolian-Tindari-Letojanni fault system (SE Tyrrhenian Sea-NE Sic…
2017
Framed in the current geodynamics of the central Mediterranean, the Aeolian-Tindari-Letojanni fault system is part of a wider NW-SE oriented right-lateral wrench zone which accommodates diverging motion between regional-scale blocks located at the southern edge of the Calabrian Arc. In order to investigate the structural architecture and the active deformation pattern of the northern sector of this tectonic feature, structural observations on-land, high and very-high resolution seismic reflection data, swath bathymetry data and seismological and geodetic data were merged from the Lipari-Vulcano volcanic complex (central sector of the Aeolian Islands) to the Peloritani Mountains across the G…
Perforazione della Caldera dei Campi Flegrei - Una proposta anfibia IODP-ICDP
2018
Active calderas are major volcanic features of the Earth’s crust associated with shallow magma reservoirs, high geothermal gradients, and geodynamic unrests often documented through historical time. As large caldera-forming eruptions are also among the most catastrophic events that may affect the Earth’s surface, calderas are ostensibly the sites of major interest for both the scientific community and governmental institutions worldwide. The Campi Flegrei is an active volcanic area located west of the city of Naples, largely on the continental shelf of the Eastern Tyrrhenian margin that has been characterized by dominantly explosive eruptions during the latest Quaternary. This is one among …
Architecture of the NYT caldera and inner resurgent dome (Pozzuoli Bay, Campi Flegrei): new insights from seismic reflection and DInSAR data
2016
The Campi Flegrei and its offshore prolongation (Pozzuoli Bay) are a volcanic area dominated by a collapse caldera associated with the Neapolitan Yellow Tuff (NYT) eruption, occurred at ~15 ka BP, and by an intra-caldera resurgent dome. We present new insights into: a) the geometry and kinematics of faults formed inside and at the edge of the caldera, b) the architecture of the caldera and the resurgent dome, and c) the relationship between the structural elements of the caldera and ground deformation. This work is based on the integration of single- and multi- channel seismic, swath bathymetry data and ground deformation maps. The main results highlight that the NYT caldera, offshore, is c…
