Inquiry-Based Approaches in Primary Science Teacher Education

2018

This chapter introduces an interactional graphic tool together with a model for inquiry-based science teaching (abbreviated as IBST). The combination of the graphic tool and model offers an approach to support the planning, implementation, reflection and analysis of dialogic IBST. The potential use is illustrated here using a case study in which student teachers used IBST to develop their teaching. The interactional graphic and the model are fundamentally related to three established approaches to science teaching: inquiry-based science teaching, dialogic teaching and the communicative approach. Together, these approaches draw attention to learner participation in inquiry-based science teac…

Playing with Time in Digital Fiction

2015

The exceptional quality of digital fictions lies in their inherently dynamic nature, how they may be flexibly programmed to generate new content and alter the already existing contents. This adds a new temporal level, compared to traditional fictions. Digital games, especially, incorporate aspects of simulation and narration in their structure. As interactive and dynamic media form, games are specifically temporal in nature. They offer us the flexibility and preciseness of digital simulations, with the potential of psychologically engaging narrative qualities, which together open up a whole new field of experimenting with temporally dynamic media. Much of the new media fictions partake in a…

The Use of Game World Tasks Concepts in Higher Education

2016

The link between tasks presented in games and tasks used in higher education might have more in common than we think. Analysing how tasks work in games and applying those structures to higher education teaching can enable teachers to develop more creative, situated and exciting tasks for their students. In addition, it can improve communication and feedback. Analysis shows that tasks are an area where elements of gamification work. This article looks into the possibility of reproducing the flexibility and key components of game tasks in actual tasks in higher education. We look at the challenges and limitations and ways to solve them. Therefore, we analyse the concept of quest-logs in games…

Integration of Pedagogical Knowledge in the Light of Questions about the Empirical Foundations of General Pedagogy and Understanding of the Concept o…

2018

The main purpose of the article is to show that the studies undertaken by pedagogues, regarding both the experimental foundations of pedagogy and generality, have some common points and that an in-depth reflection on those issues highlights the postulate to treat pedagogical knowledge in an integral manner. The first part presents the relationship between the issue of the empirical foundations of pedagogy and the problems of integrity of pedagogical knowledge; the second part – the relationship between the concept of generality and the problems of integrity, and the concluding part presents a proposed understanding of general pedagogy as integral pedagogy in which the approach towards both …

Student Mentoring in the Master Programme “Pedagogy”: the case of University of Latvia

2019

There is a developing interest in mentoring and tutoring in the higher education in Latvia. Mentoring is looked at as a retention strategy to support students to remain and continue studies and as a tool to prevent students’ drop out from the university. Since academic year 2016/2017 several programmes of tutoring and mentoring in basic studies (bachelor level studies)have been developed and financially supported at the University of Latvia, but so far mentoring has not been used for Master level students. The Master program “Pedagogy” includes a theoretical course “Methods of Mentoring at the Educational Institution”. Since academic year 2018/2019 new tasks were introduced for the second y…

Effect of composite/amalgam thickness on fracture resistance of maxillary premolar teeth, restored with combined amalgam-composite restorations

2016

Background: Combined amalgam-composite restorations have been used through many years to benefit from the advantages of both dental amalgam and composite resin. Two variations have been mentioned for this technique, this study investigated the fracture resistance of maxillary premolar teeth with extended mesio-occluso-distal (MOD) cavities, restored with the two variations of combined amalgam-composite restorations. Material and Methods: Sixty intact extracted premolar teeth were randomly divided into 6 groups (G1-G6) of 10 teeth. G1; consisted of intact teeth and G2; consisted of teeth with MOD preparations were assigned as the positive and negative control groups respectively. Other exper…

Sicily’s fold–thrust belt and slab roll-back: the SI.RI.PRO. seismic crustal transect

2016

Sicily is a thick orogenic wedge formed by (1) the foreland (African) and its Sicilian orogen and (2) the thick-skinned, Calabrian–Peloritani wedge. The crust under central Sicily, from the Tyrrhenian margin to the coastline of the Sicily Channel, has been investigated by the multidisciplinary (SI.RI.PRO.) research project. The project dealt with the nature and thickness of the crust and depth and geometry of the Moho, which is essential in formulating subduction models and improving the knowledge of African and Tyrrhenian–European lithospheres. The results resolve features such as (1) the main orogenic wedge, (2) the very steep, NW–SE-trending regional monocline suggesting inflection of th…

Proteus: Adverbial multi-word expressions in Italian and their cognate counterparts in -mente

2022

Abstract: This contribution focuses on Italian adverbs ending in -mente (e.g. lussuosamente ‘luxuriously’) with an analytic counterpart (a multi-word expression, MWE) which is etymologically related and it is capable of equally performing the adverbial function (e.g. di lusso). Two sentences diverging only in this regard have the same truth values and they entail each other. Morphologically, such adverbial MWEs are formed by a preposition which is followed by a noun/adjective sharing the content morpheme of the -mente adverb. However, in some contexts the cognate –mente adverb cannot replace its MWE. For instance, only adjectival MWEs can be used as predicates in copular constructions (La f…

Ethics and Politics in Spanish Universities. The research assessment as a Technology of Subjectivity

2013

Through our work, we seek to analyse critically the transformation of educational subjectivities produced by discourses and practices within the framework of the current reform process that Spanish universities are undergoing. This transformation is linked to neoliberal government rationales , but we would like to describe it taking into account the local coordination modalities which characterize the context of Spanish universities. To do so, we focus on a technology which structures and feeds on discourses and key practices in the reform process: the six-year research period (sexennium). As a technology of subjectivity , it represents a system of thought involved in the development of mor…

Historicism: Some Thoughts on Life-World

1993

More than three decades ago, Walter Biemel read a paper at the Third Colloquium of Philosophy at Royaumont on “The Decisive Phases in the Development of Husserl’s Philosophy” that seemed to be definitive.1 Notwithstanding the great value of the facts and reflections that he provided, and the numerous studies devoted afterwards to the same problem, it is not easy to fix different stages in Husserl’s work. This difficulty is increased by the lack of a strict synchrony between the works that Husserl himself published and those that remained unpublished after his death and have been laboriously recovered by his disciples. Actually, in manuscripts belonging to early moments in his life we find t…
