Neuromuscular performance of lower limbs during voluntary and reflex activity in power- and endurance-trained athletes.

1994

Neural, mechanical and muscle factors influence muscle force production. This study was, therefore, designed to compare possible differences in the function of the neuromuscular system among differently adapted subjects. A group of 11 power-trained athletes and 10 endurance-trained athletes volunteered as subjects for this study. Maximal voluntary isometric force and the rate of force production of the knee extensor and the plantar flexor muscles were measured. In addition, basic reflex function was measured in the two experimental conditions. The power athletes produced higher voluntary forces (P<0.01-0.001) with higher rates for force production (P<0.001) by both muscle groups measured. U…

Bilateral reciprocal organisation in man: focus on IA interneurone

1994

The H reflex of flexor carpi radialis and radial-induced reciprocal inhibition were recorded in normal subjects during conditioning stimulation of the contralateral median or radial nerves. It was found that stimulation of the contralateral median nerve enhanced the degree of reciprocal inhibition exerted by the radial nerve on the median nerve, while contralateral radial nerve stimulation reduced the reciprocal inhibition exerted by the extensor on the flexor. In two subjects in which a pure extensor H reflex was recorded specular features were observed following contralateral median and radial stimulation. These findings are considered to be the electrophysiological manifestation of contr…

Neuromuscular Adaptations to Short-Term High-Intensity Interval Training in Female Ice-Hockey Players

2019

Kinnunen, J-V, Piitulainen, H, and Piirainen, JM. Neuromuscular adaptations to short-term high-intensity interval training in female ice-hockey players. J Strength Cond Res 33(2): 479-485, 2019-High-intensity interval training (HIIT)-related neuromuscular adaptations, changes in force production, and on-ice performance were investigated in female ice-hockey players during preseason. Fourteen Finnish championship level ice-hockey players (average age 22 ± 3 years) participated in 2½-week HIIT. Both spinal (H-reflex) and supraspinal (V-wave) neuromuscular responses of the soleus muscle were recorded before and after the training period. Static jump (SJ) and countermovement jump heights, plant…

Assimilation, reflexivity, and therapist responsiveness in group psychotherapy for social phobia: A case study.

2017

Objective: This case study examined reflexivity and the assimilation of problematic experiences, especially its progress within and between the Assimilation of Problematic Experiences Scale (APES) Stages 2–3, in group psychotherapy for social phobia. Method: The data consisted of all of one client's turns expressing the two voices of her main problematic experience in 12 sessions, and all replies by the therapist in direct connection to them. The client's utterances were rated on the APES. Results: A detailed analysis of 13 conversational passages revealed that progress in assimilation happened only when the client took a reflexive stance towards her inner experience or outer actions. There…

Mechanical efficiency of locomotion in females during different kinds of muscle action

1990

The mechanical efficiencies (ME) of pure positive and pure negative work as well as of stretch-shortening cycle (SSC) exercise were investigated with a special sledge apparatus. The subjects were 20 young females who performed six different types of submaximal exercise: two of pure concentric exercise (positive work), two of pure eccentric exercise (negative work) and two SSC exercises. The work intensities were determined individually, from the recordings of distance obtained during a single maximal concentric exercise. Each exercise involved 60 muscle actions lasting a total of 3 min per testing condition. The MEs of pure positive work with intensities of 30% and 60% maximum (C30 and C60 …

A fully automated system for the evaluation of masseter silent periods.

1997

Exteroceptive suppression of masseter muscle activity, 'masseter inhibitory reflex', comprises one or 2 silent periods (SP1 and SP2) interrupting the voluntary activation. The main problem when evaluating exteroceptive suppression is the lack of an objective and precise measure for the onset and end of the silent period which so far has not been overcome by various automated systems. We describe a new fully automated system for determining the onset and end of the masseter silent period. The decision approach is essentially based upon deterministic properties of median filters which are used to partition the local variances of the EMG traces into constant segments and edges between them. Th…

Time of day effects on isometric and isokinetic torque developed during elbow flexion in humans

2001

The aim of this study was, firstly, to confirm or refute the existence of circadian rhythms during several velocities of concentric action of the elbow flexor muscles and, secondly, to compare the characteristics of these circadian rhythms with those obtained during isometric actions. Eight volunteer subjects participated in this study. The circadian rhythms were obtained from six test sessions (TS) carried out at different times of day over 6 days with only one TS a day. During each TS, oral temperature and the torque of the muscle action were measured. The subjects made, on an isokinetic ergometer, two maximal isokinetic concentric elbow flexions at five angular velocities (60, 120, 180, …

Vaginal reconstruction with bilateral island "extended" groin flaps: description of a personal technique.

1994

We propose a vaginal reconstruction method using two island "extended" groin flaps designed over the iliac crests and in axis with the superficial circumflex iliac arteries. After a surgical revision of the pelvic organs and dissection of the area between the bladder and the rectum, the two flaps pass, extraperitoneally by way of the abdomen, through an incision made along the lateral margin of the rectus muscle and, from before to behind, through the fibrovascular lamina lateral to the bladder, and finally are placed in the area between the bladder and the rectum, where they are sutured. The technique has been applied to one patient and allowed reconstruction of a vaginal canal with very s…

Mitral valve aneurysm revealed by cross-sectional echocardiography in a patient with mitral valve prolapse

1984

We report a cerebral ischemia in a 23-year-old woman, in whom a mitral valve aneurysm with thrombotic masses was diagnosed by cross-sectional echocardiography. A prolapsing mitral leaflet was also visualized.

Hypoplasia of the posterior mitral valve leaflet: Don't forget to look beyond the mitral valve.

2020

Hypoplasia of the posterior mitral valve leaflet (PMVL) is a very rare finding in adulthood and can coexist with other congenital heart defects. In this image, a transesophageal echocardiography (TOE) carried out on a 59-year-old woman with a 2-month history of dyspnea revealed a hypoplastic PMVL causing severe mitral regurgitation associated with a secundum-type atrial septal defect (ASD) with left-to-right shunting. This case demonstrates how essential 3-dimensional TOE is for a comprehensive assessment of the mitral valve and to improve the diagnostic accuracy of concomitant congenital heart abnormalities.
