Augmenting the algorithm: emerging human-in-the-loop work configurations
2020
Abstract How do configurations of humans and algorithms evolve as firms adopt artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities, and what are the implications for work and organization? We explored these questions through a two-year long case study of an organization in the international maritime trade that introduced automated algorithmic support for data analysis and prediction work. Drawing on a human–machine configuration perspective, we found that humans and the algorithm were configured and reconfigured in multiple ways over time as the organization dealt with the introduction of algorithmic analysis. In contrast to replacing human work, the emergent configurations required new roles and redi…

La experiencia docente del Observatorio de derechos humanos en la formación de juristas comprometidos
2021
[EN] The Human Rights Observatory is a pilot experience based on the teaching-learning methodology that allows, in an open, dynamic and participatory way. It monitors international current affairs and opens up a space for discussion and debate in the classroom on all those phenomena that, to a greater or lesser extent, condition International Law in the contemporary world. For this purpose, the Observatory will raise questions about issues of interest, highly topical subjects, complex problems, controversial processes and, above all, new approaches that encourage, not only through autonomous work but also through critical reflection, to deepen and complement the theoretical content of the d…
Formulating a Revised Taxonomy for Modes of Listening
2012
Abstract Listening to sounds or music is not a homogeneous act of grasping meanings by hearing. Yet it is often portrayed as such, especially when the intentional stance of a listener is overlooked. This paper distinguishes listening as the action-oriented intentional activity of making sense of the world. It is proposed that the multifaceted and heterogeneous nature of ‘understanding by listening’ can be outlined in terms of distinct modes of listening. Building upon previous accounts, a revised taxonomy of nine listening modes (reflexive, kinaesthetic, connotative, causal, empathetic, functional, semantic, reduced and critical listening) is proposed and illustrated by examples. Modes refe…
Parlare per ascoltarsi. Note su alcuni aspetti dell'interlocuzione.
2015
This paper considers the nature of interlocution from the point of view of three different research programs: the theory of enunciative operations of Antoine Culioli (or toe), the psychoanalysis of Jacques Lacan (or pla) and the enactive grammar of Didier Bottineau (or ge). It is composed of three parts: in the first part, we introduce some definitions of interlocution in order to distinguish between terms and empirical supports of interlocution. The second part is devoted to the analysis of some sensorial operations that are at work in the context of verbal inter- action – with particular reference to the cases of acoustic feedback. Finally, in the last part we discuss in which sense and u…
Massive Open Online Courses for IFRS Education: A Point of view of Spanish Accounting Educators
2016
Abstract This paper is based on a survey of 103 accounting educators from different universities of Spain on the use of MOOC, especially as regards teaching IFRS. The results show significant differences in three areas of opinion: i) the importance of the use of Internet and some Web tools for academic use; ii) general knowledge and perception of MOOCs; and iii) the opinions regarding the interest of MOOCs on IFRS. The overall opinion of educators is positive because, although the majority has never taught or participated in a MOOC, over 80% consider it useful in the learning process. Flexibility is considered the main advantage of MOOCs as well as its valuable potential for autonomous lear…
Intervening in domestic violence : interprofessional collaboration among social and health care professionals and the police
2021
Encountering domestic violence victims, perpetrators and witnesses in the multiprofessional fields of health and social care and policing includes various challenges. Each professional group perceives domestic violence from its own perspective, linked to its position in the field, core tasks, institutional practices and organizational structures. In this study, we examine interprofessional collaboration among Finnish social and health care professionals and police officers, focusing on the practices and conceptions concerning domestic violence interventions. The data consists of 16 focus group interviews, involving a total of 67 interviewees from social and health care professions and the p…
Development of a modular room-temperature hydride storage system for vehicular applications
2016
The subject of this paper concerns the development of a vehicular hydrogen tank system, using a commercial interstitial metal hydride as storage material. The design of the tank was intended to feed a fuel cell in a light prototype vehicle, and the chosen hydride material, Hydralloy C5 by GfE, was expected to be able to absorb and desorb hydrogen in a range of pressure suitable for this purpose. A systematic analysis of the material in laboratory scale allows an extrapolation of the thermodynamic and reaction kinetics data. The following development of the modular tank was done according to the requirements of the prototype vehicle propulsion system and led to promising intermediate results…
Transcranial Doppler and Cortical Microcirculation at Increased Intracranial Pressure and during the Cushing Response
1995
The effect of increased intracranial pressure on the flow velocity of the basilar artery was measured with transcranial ultrasonic Doppler in New Zealand White rabbits under alpha-chloralose anesthesia and artificial respiration. Laser Doppler flowmetry served to study changes of the cortical microcirculation. The results confirm a high inverse correlation of the diastolic flow velocity, the pulsatility index, and the resistance index with the cerebral perfusion pressure (CPP). During acute intracranial hypertension, however, these parameters do not show a good correlation with the local cortical blood flow. The absence of a correlation was evident over a wide CPP range down to values of 35…
