On natural metalinguistic abilities in aphasia: a preliminary study

Background: Natural metalinguistic abilities, which are put into play without explicit instructions, constitute the cognitive basis for a “reflexive” use of language, a particular manifestation of the executive function when applied to language and verbal behaviour. This reflexive use entails a specific attentional activity by speakers and hearers with regard to linguistic outputs, and an intentional experience-based control over the language use. Yeats distanced himself publicly from the TCD Professor. This act of distancing has largely been accepted by subsequent scholarship as a reflection of Dowden's lack of influence on Yeats. Persons do not ‘use’ the forms that are said to constitute a pre-existing language system; they adapt and shape their bodily behaviour, including their vocalizing, in accordance with community-level norms and practices that have historical continuity and thus define the cultural-historical traditions of a community. Heteroglossia as a resource for reflexive participation in a community of Christian snowboarders in Finland

This paper addresses the ways in which linguistic heteroglossia is mobilized to construct participation in a youth cultural community of practice. The analysis focuses on spoken interaction among Christian snowboarders in Finland, and specifically on how the community members create social meanings by using their shared linguistic resources (e.g. religious register or snowboarding terminology). These socially indexical resources gain new meanings when the snowboarders engage in debates concerning gender, expertise and literal versus non-literal interpretations of the Bible. Two languages in the air : a cross-cultural comparison of preschool teachers’ reflections on their flexible bilingual practices

Bilingual preschool education is under researched compared with bilingual school education. There is also a lack of research on bilingual preschool teachers’ agency and how they negotiate between two languages in the classroom. We examined the language practices of five bilingual preschool teachers working within three different socio-linguistic settings, in Finland (Finnish–Swedish and Russian–Finnish contexts) and Israel (an Arabic–Hebrew context) and interviewed the teachers about their use of languages in the classroom. En aquest treball, analitzem la subclasse de verbs incoatius del català, pertanyent a la tercera conjugació, aplicant el concepte d’exaptació (Lass 1990), que serveix per a explicar canvis que consisteixen en la reutilització de material morfològic no funcional: en els verbs incoatius, el procés d’exaptació consisteix en el reciclatge d’un afix lèxic com a increment del radical quan perd el valor semàntic inicial de ‘canvi d’estat’ i queda relegat a certs verbs de la tercera conjugació. Aquesta reutilització funcional comporta l’aparició d’una subclasse de verbs dins de la tercera conjugació que, a causa de la seua estabilitat, ha esdevingut el model flexiu majoritari d’aquesta conjugació. …
