2017
Controlled aggregation of polymer-stabilized calcium silicate hydrate nanoparticles leads to elastic cementitious materials.
Mechanical, thermal and electrical properties of monolayer and bilayer graded Al/SiC/rice husk ash (RHA) composite
2017
Abstract The mechanical, electrical and thermal properties as well as thermal expansion of Al/SiC/RHA (rice husk ash) monolayer and bilayer composite have been studied using the Taguchi method and analysis of variance (ANOVA). The parameter that most significantly affects the modulus of elasticity of Al/SiC/RHA bilayer composites is processing time, with contribution percentages of 68 and 27% calculated from stress-strain graphs and ultrasonic method, respectively. However, the factor which mostly affects bending strength, CTE value and electrical resistivity of composites is process temperature with contribution percentages of 32, 28, and 22%, respectively. The projected values for modulus…
Analytical Refinement of Sandwich Plate Bending Problem Considering Local Effects-I
1999
Analytic expressions for local flexural characteristics and stresses of sandwich panels under loading by point forces have been found. A discrete-layer model for bending of a three-layer panel with a soft filler is proposed. Contractility of a normal in the model is deduced in terms of a difference between deflections of face layers. The accountability of transverse shear in the filler and the sheets is deduced on piecewise rotation of the normal. Equations of the model having four degrees of displacement freedom are of twelfth order. The specific features of the stress from point forces in cylindrical bending are considered using the operational Laplace method with the generalized Dirac f…
Mechanical properties of Macadamia nutshell powder and PLA bio-composites
2016
AbstractA study on the mechanical properties of Macadamia nutshell powder/PLA bio-composites is presented in this paper. The effects of powder weight content, powder condition and processing methods are investigated with the aid of Design of Experiments. It is shown from the results that both the stiffness and strength are dependent on the weight content of Macadamia nutshell powders. The elastic modulus increases 9.8% when the Macadamia nutshell powder content is 40%. Both flexural and tensile strengths decrease with increasing Macadamia nutshell powder content. On average, when the Macadamia nutshell powder content is 40%, the decreases in the flexural and tensile strengths are 42 and 63%…
PLA based biocomposites reinforced with Arundo donax fillers
2014
Abstract In this work, for the first time, a natural and almost inexpensive filler obtained by grinding the culms of Arundo donax was used to prepare PLA based biocomposites. The composites were prepared by melt compounding PLA with A. donax filler (ADF). The influence of the content and size of ADF on the morphology and on the mechanical and thermal properties of PLA–ADF composites was evaluated. Moreover, ADF was extracted from composites to evaluate the effect of processing on morphology and dimensions of the incorporated filler. Furthermore, the experimental elastic moduli of the biocomposites have been fitted, employing two theoretical models, i.e., Hill and Halpin–Tsai. The results sh…
Mechanical, degradation and drug-release behavior of nano-grained Fe-Ag composites for biomedical applications.
2018
Abstract An original fabrication route of high-strength bulk Fe-5Ag and Fe-10Ag nanocomposites with enhanced degradation rate is reported. Near fully dense materials with fine nanostructures and uniform distribution of Ag nanoparticles were obtained employing high energy attrition milling of Fe-Ag2O powder blends followed by cold sintering – high pressure consolidation at ambient temperature that allowed the retention of the nanoscale structure. Annealing in hydrogen flow at 550 °C resulted in enhanced ductility without coarsening the nanostructure. The strength in compression of Fe5Ag and Fe10Ag nanocomposites was several-fold higher than the values reported for similar composites with mic…
Bending test for capturing the vivid behavior of giant reeds, returned through a proper fractional visco-elastic model
2015
Abstract This paper presents results of experimental investigations made to evaluate the vivid behavior of giant reed Arundo donax. In particular, attention was paid to the relationship between visco-elastic properties and moisture content, which is widely recognized as one of the key factor that influences the mechanical properties of all wood-based materials. To this aim, after a controlled drying treatment on samples of reed, stress relaxation tests in three point bending configuration were performed to evaluate the effects of moisture content on visco-elastic behavior of the giant reed. Further, the novel aspect of this paper is that of using an Euler–Bernoulli model embedded with an ad…
Novel hybrid polymer composites with graphene and MXene nano-reinforcements: computational analysis
2021
This paper presents a computational analysis on the mechanical and damage behavior of novel hybrid polymer composites with graphene and MXene nano-reinforcements targeted for flexible electronics and advanced high-strength structural applications with additional functions, such as real-time monitoring of structural integrity. Geometrical models of three-dimensional representative volume elements of various configurations were generated, and a computational model based on the micromechanical finite element method was developed and solved using an explicit dynamic solver. The influence of the geometrical orientation, aspect ratio, and volume fractions of the inclusions, as well as the interfa…
Influence of sodium bicarbonate treatment on the aging resistance of natural fiber reinforced polymer composites under marine environment
2019
Abstract Aim of the current study is to investigate how an innovative and eco-friendly chemical treatment based on sodium bicarbonate solution (10 wt%) can improve the aging resistance in marine environment of epoxy based composites, reinforced with flax and jute fibers. To this scope, treated and untreated fiber reinforced composites were manufactured through vacuum infusion technique. The resulting composites were then exposed to salt-fog spray conditions up to 60 days, according to ASTM B117 standard. The assessment of their durability was made by means of tensile, flexural quasi-static tests and Charpy impact tests. Furthermore, the water uptake evolution of each composite was monitored…
Densely packed semiflexible macromolecules in a rigid spherical capsule
2018
The ordering of semiflexible polymers with persistence length lp and contour length L confined in a sphere of radius R is studied by molecular dynamics simulations of a coarse-grained model. Monomer densities are chosen where the corresponding bulk lyotropic solution or melt is a well-ordered nematic, and purely repulsive walls of the rigid confining sphere are considered. It is found that polymers close to the walls are bent according to the curvature of the confining spheres with all their monomers in a few layers parallel to the sphere surface, whereas the remaining macromolecules closer to the sphere center have one chain end and their center of mass far from the surface. The latter cha…
