The quantum, the geon, and the crystal

2015

Effective geometries arising from a hypothetical discrete structure of space-time can play an important role in the understanding of the gravitational physics beyond General Relativity. To discuss this question, we make use of lessons from crystalline systems within solid state physics, where the presence of defects in the discrete microstructure of the crystal determine the kind of effective geometry needed to properly describe the system in the macroscopic continuum limit. In this work we study metric-affine theories with non-metricity and torsion, which are the gravitational analog of crystalline structures with point defects and dislocations. We consider a crystal-motivated gravitationa…

Quantum Spin-Tunneling:A Path Integral Approach

1995

We investigate the quantum tunneling of a large spin in a crystal field and an external magnetic field. The twofold degeneracy of the corresponding classical ground state is removed due to tunneling. The tunnel splitting ΔE o of the ground state is calculated by use of a path integral formalism. It is shown that coherent spin state path integrals do not yield a reasonable result. However a “bosonlzation” of the spin system yields excellent results in the semiclassical limit. This result follows from the coherent spin state approach from replacing the spin quantum number s by s + 1/2 which causes a renormalization of the preexponential factor of ΔE o .

Multifunctional polyurethane foams with thermal energy storage/release capability

2020

In this work, polyurethane (PU) insulating panels containing different amounts of a microencapsulated paraffin with a nominal melting temperature of 24 °C, used as phase change material (PCM), were produced. The resulting panels behaved as multifunctional materials able to thermally insulate and simultaneously storing/releasing thermal energy near room temperature. The panels were characterized from a microstructural, thermal and mechanical point of view. Viscosity measurements highlighted an increase in the viscosity values of the PU liquid precursors due to the addition of the capsules, and this could lead to some difficulties during the production stages, especially in the mixing and foa…

Evidence of Mechanisms Occurring in Thermally Induced Phase Separation of Polymeric Systems

2014

Thermally induced phase separation is a fabrication technique for porous polymeric structures. By means of easy-to-tune processing parameters, such as system composition and demixing temperature, a vast latitude of average pore dimensions, pore size distributions, and morphologies can be obtained. The relation between demixing temperature and morphology was demonstrated via cloud point curve measurement and foams fabrication with controlled thermal protocols, for the model system poly-l-lactide–dioxane–water. The morphologies obtained at a temperature lower than cloud point showed a closed-pore architecture, suggesting a “nucleation-and-growth” separation mechanism, which produced larger po…

Enzymatically modified LDL induces cathepsin H in human monocytes: potential relevance in early atherogenesis.

2003

Objective—Modification with proteases and cholesterylesterase transforms LDL to a moiety that resembles lipoproteins isolated from atherosclerotic lesions and possesses atherogenic properties. To identify changes in monocyte-derived foam cells laden with enzymatically modified LDL (E-LDL), we compared patterns of the most abundant transcripts in these cells after incubation with LDL or E-LDL.Methods and Results—Serial analyses of gene expression (SAGE) libraries were constructed from human monocytes after treatment with LDL or E-LDL. Several tags were differentially expressed in LDL-treated versus E-LDL–treated cells, whereby marked selective induction by E-LDL of cathepsin H was conspicuou…

A closed formula for the evaluation of foams

2020

International audience; We give a purely combinatorial formula for evaluating closed, decorated foams. Our evaluation gives an integral polynomial and is directly connected to an integral, equivariant version of colored Khovanov-Rozansky link homology categorifying the sl(N) link polynomial. We also provide connections to the equivariant cohomology rings of partial flag varieties.

The role of EPS in fouling and foaming phenomena occurring in an UCT-MBR pilot plant

2012

The aim of this study is to detect a possible relationship between EPS and fouling and EPS and foaming in a University Cape Town (UCT) membrane bioreactor (MBR) pilot plant. The UCT-MBR pilot plant was fed with 40 L/h of real wastewater and monitored for 165 days. Specifically physical/chemical features of influent, permeate and mixed liquor in different sections were analyzed. The fouling phenomenon was studied monitoring the hydraulic resistances of the membrane. The extracellular polymeric substances (EPSs) concentration inside the aerobic tank were also measured. The foaming phenomenon was monitored by performing the Foam Power and Scum Index testes. Results have shown a high correlatio…
