Crumpling of a stiff tethered membrane.

first-principles numerical simulation model for crumpling of a stiff tethered membrane is introduced. In our model membranes, wrinkles, ridge formation, ridge collapse, as well as the initiation of stiffness divergence, are observed. The ratio of the amplitude and wave length of the wrinkles, and the scaling exponent of the stiffness divergence, are consistent with both theory and experiment. We observe that close to the stiffness divergence there appears a crossover beyond which the elastic behavior of a tethered membrane becomes similar to that of dry granular media. On the nature of interactions in the F2 OXe(…) NCCH3 complex: Is there the Xe(IV)N bond?

Nature of the bonding in isolated XeOF2 molecule and F2 OXe(…) NCCH3 complexes have been studied in the gas phase (0 K) using Quantum Chemical Topology methods. The wave functions have been approximated at the MP2 and DFT levels of calculations, using the APFD, B3LYP, M062X, and B2PLYP functionals with the GD3 dispersion correction. The nature of the formal XeO bond in the XeOF2 monomer depends on the basis set used (all-electron vs. the ecp-28 approximation for Xe). Within the all-electron basis set approach the bond is represented by two bonding attractors, Vi = 1,2 (Xe,O), with total population of about 1.06e and highly delocalized electron density in both bonding basins. Optical pumping and unstable nuclei

The paper reviews the application of optical pumping to short-lived nuclei, where either the nuclear polarisation is detected by the β-decay asymmetry or the atomic polarisation by Stern-Gerlach-analyzer. Moreover the paper deals with collinear laser spectroscopy on beams of short-lived, mass-separated isotopes. The aim of the experiments is the systematic investigation of nuclear structure through the determination of spin, moments and charge radii from the hyperfine structure and isotopic shift of the atomic spectra. The impact of these experiments on the theory of nuclear forces and structure is discussed by means of a few examples.

Mapping CO diffusion paths in Myoglobin with the Single Sweep Method

The pathways of diffusion and escape of a CO molecule inside and out a myoglobin protein are investigated. Specifically, the three-dimensional potential of mean force (PMF or free energy) of the CO molecule position inside the protein is calculated by using the single-sweep method in concert with fully resolved atomistic simulations in explicit solvent.The results are interpreted under the assumption that the diffusion of the ligand can be modeled as a navigation on the PMF in which the ligand hops between the PMF local minima following the minimum free energy paths (MFEPs) with rates set by the free energy barriers that need to be crossed. In this paper we consider 2D stationary boundary value problems for the system of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations and the heat transfer equation. The viscous electrically conducting incompressible liquid moves between infinite cylinders with square or round sections placed periodically. Translational animal models for studying post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are valuable for elucidating the poorly understood neurobiology of this neuropsychiatric disorder. These models should encompass crucial features, including persistence of PTSD-like phenotypes triggered after exposure to a single traumatic event, trauma susceptibility/resilience and predictive validity. Ground reaction forces and mechanical power were investigated when the subjects walked normally, while they were racing or running at four speeds, and when they performed the running long jump take-off. The objective was to analyze body composition in children and adolescents of Southern Europe to identify prevalence of overweight and obesity. This investigation involved 512 girls and 488 boys between 7-to 19-years. Variables evaluated were Body Mass Index (BMI) and Fat Mass (FM; electrical bioimpedance).
