Computer-Controlled Experiments in the Surface Forces Apparatus with a CCD-Spectrograph

We present a computer-controlled technique to measure the distance-dependent forces in the surface forces apparatus. The power of our setup is shown by a measurement of the repulsive forces between mica surfaces immersed in a 0.01 M NaCl solution. At close distances we find an oscillatory force with a periodicity of 0.30 nm, which roughly corresponds to the diameter of a water molecule. For the distance determination we use the standard interferometric technique: the interferometer consists of a medium sandwiched between two mica sheets of equal thickness silvered on the backside. New results on the Roper resonance and the P_{11} partial wave

Properties of the Roper resonance, the first scalar excitation of the nucleon, are determined. Pole positions and residues of the $P_{11}$ partial wave are studied in a combined analysis of pion- and photo-induced reactions. We find the Roper pole at $\{(1371\pm7)-i(92\pm10)\}$ MeV and an elasticity of $0.61\pm 0.03$. The largest decay coupling is found for the $N\sigma$ ($\sigma=(\pi\pi)$-$S$-wave). The analysis is based on new data on $\gamma p\to p\pi^0\pi^0$ for photons in the energy range from the two-pion threshold to 820 MeV from TAPS at Mainz and from 0.4 to 1.3 GeV from Crystal Barrel at Bonn and includes further data from other experiments. Spatial correlations of vacuum fluctuations and the Casimir-Polder potential

We calculate the Casimir-Polder intermolecular potential using an effective Hamiltonian recently introduced. We show that the potential can be expressed in terms of the dynamical polarizabilities of the two atoms and the equal-time spatial correlation of the electric field in the vacuum state. This gives support to an interesting physical model recently proposed in the literature, where the potential is obtained from the classical interaction between the instantaneous atomic dipoles induced and correlated by the vacuum fluctuations. Also, the results obtained suggest a more general validity of this intuitive model, for example when external boundaries or thermal fields are present.

Dalį Ilūkstės apskrities lenkų ir lietuvių karinės pajėgos okupavo 1919 m. vasarą. Lenkų valdžios įstaigos nedelsdamos įtraukė 6 apskrities rytinės dalies valsčius ir Gryvos miestą į savo valstybės sudėtį ir atsisakė svarstyti šį klausimą su Latvijos atstovais. Klausimas buvo išspręstas tiktai 1920 m. liepos pradžioje, kai dėl Raudonosios armijos puolimo lenkų kariuomenė buvo priversta pasitraukti iš Ilūkstės apskrities. Tuo pasinaudojo Latvijos pusė, tuo momentu pagal savo galimybes užimdami dalį tos teritorijos. Likusią užėmė lietuviai, kurie jau nuo 1919 m. vasaros buvo rūpimoje Ilūkstės apskrities dalyje. Nors derybose tarp Latvijos ir Lietuvos buvo deklaruota, kad sienos tarp tų valsty…
