Landscapes and traces of human activities preserved under forest : the forest of Val Suzon (Côte-d'Or) on long time
2021
This thesis is part of a process to improve and deepen our knowledge of the territory of Val Suzon (21), especially concerning its history. It is a matter of studying the evolution of the natural and social dynamics that shaped the forest of Val Suzon, thanks to a multidisciplinary approach focusing on biodiversity, landscape, history, archeology, etc. The subject of this thesis concerns, among other things, issues relating to natural resources available in the territory of Val Suzon as well as the management and exploitation of these resources by human communities. It also focuses on identifying the impacts of these activities on flora and fauna, examining their adaptation over time and sp…
Machine learning for rapid mapping of archaeological structures made of dry stones – Example of burial monuments from the Khirgisuur culture, Mongoli…
2020
11 pages; International audience; The present study proposes a workflow to extract from orthomosaics the enormous amount of dry stones used by past societies to construct funeral complexes in the Mongolian steppes. Several different machine learning algorithms for binary pixel classification (i.e. stone vs non-stone) were evaluated. Input features were extracted from high-resolution orthomosaics and digital elevation models (both derived from aerial imaging). Comparative analysis used two colour spaces (RGB and HSV), texture features (contrast, homogeneity and entropy raster maps), and the topographic position index, combined with nine supervised learning algorithms (nearest centroid, naive…
1200 years of decadal-scale variability of Mediterranean vegetation and climate at Pantelleria Island, Italy.
2013
A new sedimentary sequence from Lago di Venere on Pantelleria Island, located in the Strait of Sicily between Tunisia and Sicily was recovered. The lake is located in the coastal infra-Mediterranean vegetation belt at 2 m a.s.l. Pollen, charcoal and sedimentological analyses are used to explore linkages among vegetation, fire and climate at a decadal scale over the past 1200 years. A dry period from ad 800 to 1000 that corresponds to the 'Medieval Warm Period' (WMP) is inferred from sedimentological analysis. The high content of carbonate recorded in this period suggests a dry phase, when the ratio of evaporation/precipitation was high. During this period the island was dominated by thermop…
Exotic insect pests: The impact of the Red Palm Weevil on natural and cultural heritage in Palermo (Italy)
2013
Abstract The impact of invasive exotic pests is increasingly recognised as a global issue. A global strategy to address the exotic pest problem is beginning to evolve, albeit slowly. The International Plant Protection Convention (FAO) has begun the process of harmonizing standards for pest risk analysis to minimise the spread of exotic pests without adversely impacting global trade. However if the impacts of insect invasive species on human health and on agriculture have attracted worldwide attention, researchers and policymakers address directly the connection between invasive species and damage to natural and cultural heritages. The cost of these losses is generally neglected or underesti…

Exploiting deep learning algorithms and satellite image time series for deforestation prediction
2022
In recent years, we have witnessed the emergence of Deep Learning (DL) methods, which have led to enormous progress in various fields such as automotive driving, computer vision, medicine, finances, and remote sensing data analysis. The success of these machine learning methods is due to the ever-increasing availability of large amounts of information and the computational power of computers. In the field of remote sensing, we now have considerable volumes of satellite images thanks to the large number of Earth Observation (EO) satellites orbiting the planet. With the revisit time of satellites over an area becoming shorter and shorter, it will probably soon be possible to obtain daily imag…
Intrusion Detection with Interpretable Rules Generated Using the Tsetlin Machine
2020
The rapid deployment in information and communication technologies and internet-based services have made anomaly based network intrusion detection ever so important for safeguarding systems from novel attack vectors. To this date, various machine learning mechanisms have been considered to build intrusion detection systems. However, achieving an acceptable level of classification accuracy while preserving the interpretability of the classification has always been a challenge. In this paper, we propose an efficient anomaly based intrusion detection mechanism based on the Tsetlin Machine (TM). We have evaluated the proposed mechanism over the Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining 1999 (KDD’99) …
Testing the shape-similarity hypothesis between partide-size distribution and water retention for sicilian soils
2012
Application of the Arya and Paris (AP) model to estimate the soil water retention curve requires a detailed description of the particlesize distribution (PSD) but limited experimental PSD data are generally determined by the conventional sieve-hydrometer (SH) method. Detailed PSDs can be obtained by fitting a continuous model to SH data or performing measurements by the laser diffraction (LD) method. The AP model was applied to 40 Sicilian soils for which the PSD was measured by both the SH and LD methods. The scale factor was set equal to 1.38 (procedure AP1) or estimated by a logistical model with parameters gathered from literature (procedure AP2). For both SH and LD data, procedure AP2 …
Predicting hospital associated disability from imbalanced data using supervised learning.
2019
Hospitalization of elderly patients can lead to serious adverse effects on their functional capability. Identifying the underlying factors leading to such adverse effects is an active area of medical research. The purpose of the current paper is to show the potential of artificial intelligence in the form of machine learning to complement the existing medical research. This is accomplished by studying the outcome of hospitalization of elderly patients as a supervised learning task. A rich set of features characterizing the medical and social situation of elderly patients is leveraged and using confusion matrices, association rule mining, and two different classes of supervised learning algo…
