Is there a link between fractal dimensions and other indicators of the built-up environment at a regional level
2008
International audience; Fractal dimension is used to measure the spatial arrangement (morphology) of built-up areas within a Nuts1 region (Wallonia, Belgium) and, more particularly, to test to what extent fractal dimension is related to some variables commonly used in urban economics/urban geography to characterise built environment, housings and residential choice (such as land price, housing rentals, history of urbanisation, type of housing). Special attention is put on the link with the perception of the built environment by households. A multivariate analysis concludes the paper. It is shown that fractal indices differ from other indicators and are very useful for characterising and und…
Derepressing muscleblind expression by miRNA sponges ameliorates myotonic dystrophy-like phenotypes in Drosophila
2016
AbstractMyotonic Dystrophy type 1 (DM1) originates from alleles of the DMPK gene with hundreds of extra CTG repeats in the 3′ untranslated region (3′ UTR). CUG repeat RNAs accumulate in foci that sequester Muscleblind-like (MBNL) proteins away from their functional target transcripts. Endogenous upregulation of MBNL proteins is, thus, a potential therapeutic approach to DM1. Here we identify two miRNAs, dme-miR-277 and dme-miR-304, that differentially regulate muscleblind RNA isoforms in miRNA sensor constructs. We also show that their sequestration by sponge constructs derepresses endogenous muscleblind not only in a wild type background but also in a DM1 Drosophila model expressing non-co…
Post-Publication Gatekeeping Factors and Practices: Data, Platforms, and Regulations in News Work
2023
The gatekeeping literature has turned to look at the factors and practices that shape gatekeeping in the post-publication environment, i.e., after news has entered circulation. This article adds to the discussion and argues that news workers share gatekeeping power in the post-publication environment with audiences, platforms, and regulations. Further, this study extends the post-publication gatekeeping framework and considers it in the context of datafication. The article aims to broadly understand how (audience) data is part of editorial decision-making in news media from news workers’ perceptions. The current study was conducted by interviewing news workers from three Finnish news organi…
Tracking oneself for others: communal and self-motivational value of sharing exercise data online
2021
Self-tracking is increasingly popular in recreational sport. Leisure sports practitioners use wearable devices that are connected to online platforms to record, analyse, and share their exercise data. While doing that they interact with a digital system, with themselves, and with peers. This paper examines social-communicative aspects of self-tracking, and the support that these aspects and their associated practices may provide for physical activity behaviour. Data for the study was collected using an online survey and in-depth interviews with Finnish trail runners. The results indicate that sharing exercise data with others on a regular basis can support physical activity behaviour becaus…
Whitney forms and their extensions
2021
Whitney forms are widely known as finite elements for differential forms. Whitney’s original definition yields first order functions on simplicial complexes, and a lot of research has been devoted to extending the definition to nonsimplicial cells and higher order functions. As a result, the term Whitney forms has become somewhat ambiguous in the literature. Our aim here is to clarify the concept of Whitney forms and explicitly explain their key properties. We discuss Whitney’s initial definition with more depth than usually, giving three equivalent ways to define Whitney forms. We give a comprehensive exposition of their main properties, including the proofs. Understanding of these propert…
Systematic implementation of higher order Whitney forms in methods based on discrete exterior calculus
2022
AbstractWe present a systematic way to implement higher order Whitney forms in numerical methods based on discrete exterior calculus. Given a simplicial mesh, we first refine the mesh into smaller simplices which can be used to define higher order Whitney forms. Cochains on this refined mesh can then be interpolated using higher order Whitney forms. Hence, when the refined mesh is used with methods based on discrete exterior calculus, the solution can be expressed as a higher order Whitney form. We present algorithms for the three required steps: refining the mesh, solving the coefficients of the interpolant, and evaluating the interpolant at a given point. With our algorithms, the order of…
The action of a compact Lie group on nilpotent Lie algebras of type {{n,2}}
2015
Abstract We classify finite-dimensional real nilpotent Lie algebras with 2-dimensional central commutator ideals admitting a Lie group of automorphisms isomorphic to SO 2 ( ℝ ) ${{\mathrm{SO}}_{2}(\mathbb{R})}$ . This is the first step to extend the class of nilpotent Lie algebras 𝔥 ${{\mathfrak{h}}}$ of type { n , 2 } ${\{n,2\}}$ to solvable Lie algebras in which 𝔥 ${{\mathfrak{h}}}$ has codimension one.
Labour market reforms, institutions, and the quality of employment : should we all follow German Hartz model in reforming labour markets?
2015
Underemployment and aging population are major threats for several European economies. This study asks, whether partial labour market reforms, similar to German Hartz reforms, were good choices for other European countries, especially in terms of the quality of employment. Labour market liberalisation effects are assessed from macro-perspective on 25 OECD countries with fixed-effects panel data analysis. The effects for full-time, part-time, temporary, and low-wage employment are analysed separately for both genders, and also on young adults. The results find out strongly a gendered nature of labour market deregulation effects, which give support for dual labour market theory. There appears…
Odraczanie rodzicielstwa a ocena rodziny pochodzenia przez młodych dorosłych
2019
Researchers of both contemporary family problems and statistical data point many important changes in family life. Among these, a significant place is occupied by the emergence of alternative forms of family life and transformation in the area of parenting (Dolińska, 2014; Golombok, 2015; Kemkes-Grottenthaler, 2003; Kwak, 2014; Mynarska 2009). Over the past years, the number of postponements or resignations from parental tasks has been increasing (CBOS, 2013b; GUS, 2016). The purpose of this research was to explore the functioning of family of origin of spouses who did not undertake parental tasks. The study involved 210 people (105 women and 105 men) in early adulthood in legalized relatio…
A note on *-derivations of partial *-algebras
2012
A definition of *-derivation of partial *-algebra through a sufficient family of ips-forms is proposed.
