Groups acting freely on Calabi-Yau threefolds embedded in a product of del Pezzo surfaces

In this paper, we investigate quotients of Calabi-Yau manifolds $Y$ embedded in Fano varieties $X$, which are products of two del Pezzo surfaces — with respect to groups $G$ that act freely on $Y$. In particular, we revisit some known examples and we obtain some new Calabi-Yau varieties with small Hodge numbers. The groups $G$ are subgroups of the automorphism groups of $X$, which is described in terms of the automorphism group of the two del Pezzo surfaces.

Probabilities of conditionals and previsions of iterated conditionals

Abstract We analyze selected iterated conditionals in the framework of conditional random quantities. We point out that it is instructive to examine Lewis's triviality result, which shows the conditions a conditional must satisfy for its probability to be the conditional probability. In our approach, however, we avoid triviality because the import-export principle is invalid. We then analyze an example of reasoning under partial knowledge where, given a conditional if A then C as information, the probability of A should intuitively increase. Representable and Continuous Functionals on Banach Quasi *-Algebras

In the study of locally convex quasi *-algebras an important role is played by representable linear functionals; i.e., functionals which allow a GNS-construction. This paper is mainly devoted to the study of the continuity of representable functionals in Banach and Hilbert quasi *-algebras. Some other concepts related to representable functionals (full-representability, *-semisimplicity, etc) are revisited in these special cases. In particular, in the case of Hilbert quasi *-algebras, which are shown to be fully representable, the existence of a 1-1 correspondence between positive, bounded elements (defined in an appropriate way) and continuous representable functionals is proved.

A bending theory of thermoelastic diffusion plates based on Green-Naghdi theory

Abstract This article is concerned with bending plate theory for thermoelastic diffusion materials under Green-Naghdi theory. First, we present the basic equations which characterize the bending of thin thermoelastic diffusion plates for type II and III models. The theory allows for the effect of transverse shear deformation without any shear correction factor, and permits the propagation of waves at a finite speed without energy dissipation for type II model and with energy dissipation for type III model. A Derivation of the Vlasov-Stokes System for Aerosol Flows from the Kinetic Theory of Binary Gas Mixtures

In this short paper, we formally derive the thin spray equation for a steady Stokes gas, i.e. the equation consists in a coupling between a kinetic (Vlasov type) equation for the dispersed phase and a (steady) Stokes equation for the gas. Our starting point is a system of Boltzmann equations for a binary gas mixture. The derivation follows the procedure already outlined in [Bernard-Desvillettes-Golse-Ricci, arXiv:1608.00422 [math.AP]] where the evolution of the gas is governed by the Navier-Stokes equation.

Splittings of Toric Ideals

Let $I \subseteq R = \mathbb{K}[x_1,\ldots,x_n]$ be a toric ideal, i.e., a binomial prime ideal. We investigate when the ideal $I$ can be "split" into the sum of two smaller toric ideals. For a general toric ideal $I$, we give a sufficient condition for this splitting in terms of the integer matrix that defines $I$. When $I = I_G$ is the toric ideal of a finite simple graph $G$, we give additional splittings of $I_G$ related to subgraphs of $G$. When there exists a splitting $I = I_1+I_2$ of the toric ideal, we show that in some cases we can describe the (multi-)graded Betti numbers of $I$ in terms of the (multi-)graded Betti numbers of $I_1$ and $I_2$.

Host–virus evolutionary dynamics with specialist and generalist infection strategies: Bifurcations, bistability, and chaos

In this work, we have investigated the evolutionary dynamics of a generalist pathogen, e.g., a virus population, that evolves toward specialization in an environment with multiple host types. We have particularly explored under which conditions generalist viral strains may rise in frequency and coexist with specialist strains or even dominate the population. A double mean field equation related to a curvature prescription problem

We study a double mean field-type PDE related to a prescribed curvature problem on compacts surfaces with boundary. We provide a general blow-up analysis, then a Moser-Trudinger inequality, which gives energy-minimizing solutions for some range of parameters. Finally, we provide existence of min-max solutions for a wider range of parameters, which is dense in the plane if $��$ is not simply connected.

More precisely, the study of critical points is closely related to the study of asymptotic of oscillatory integrals.
