A generalized porous medium equation related to some singular quasilinear problems

2014

Abstract In this paper we study the existence and nonexistence of solutions for a Dirichlet boundary value problem whose model is { − ∑ m = 1 ∞ a m Δ u m = f in  Ω u = 0 on  ∂ Ω , where Ω is a bounded domain of R N , a m is a sequence of nonnegative real numbers, and f is in L q ( Ω ) , q > N 2 .

On the order of indeterminate moment problems

2013

For an indeterminate moment problem we denote the orthonormal polynomials by P_n. We study the relation between the growth of the function P(z)=(\sum_{n=0}^\infty|P_n(z)|^2)^{1/2} and summability properties of the sequence (P_n(z)). Under certain assumptions on the recurrence coefficients from the three term recurrence relation zP_n(z)=b_nP_{n+1}(z)+a_nP_n(z)+b_{n-1}P_{n-1}(z), we show that the function P is of order \alpha with 0<\alpha<1, if and only if the sequence (P_n(z)) is absolutely summable to any power greater than 2\alpha. Furthermore, the order \alpha is equal to the exponent of convergence of the sequence (b_n). Similar results are obtained for logarithmic order and for more ge…

The homotopy Leray spectral sequence

2018

In this work, we build a spectral sequence in motivic homotopy that is analogous to both the Serre spectral sequence in algebraic topology and the Leray spectral sequence in algebraic geometry. Here, we focus on laying the foundations necessary to build the spectral sequence and give a convenient description of its $E_2$-page. Our description of the $E_2$-page is in terms of homology of the local system of fibers, which is given using a theory similar to Rost's cycle modules. We close by providing some sample applications of the spectral sequence and some hints at future work.

Geometric rigidity of a class of fractal sets

2017

We study geometric rigidity of a class of fractals, which is slightly larger than the collection of self-conformal sets. Namely, using a new method, we shall prove that a set of this class is contained in a smooth submanifold or is totally spread out. (© 2006 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)

Existence of a traveling wave solution in a free interface problem with fractional order kinetics

2021

Abstract In this paper we consider a system of two reaction-diffusion equations that models diffusional-thermal combustion with stepwise ignition-temperature kinetics and fractional reaction order 0 α 1 . We turn the free interface problem into a scalar free boundary problem coupled with an integral equation. The main intermediary step is to reduce the scalar problem to the study of a non-Lipschitz vector field in dimension 2. The latter is treated by qualitative topological methods based on the Poincare-Bendixson Theorem. The phase portrait is determined and the existence of a stable manifold at the origin is proved. A significant result is that the settling time to reach the origin is fin…

An order-adaptive compact approximation Taylor method for systems of conservation laws

2021

Abstract We present a new family of high-order shock-capturing finite difference numerical methods for systems of conservation laws. These methods, called Adaptive Compact Approximation Taylor (ACAT) schemes, use centered ( 2 p + 1 ) -point stencils, where p may take values in { 1 , 2 , … , P } according to a new family of smoothness indicators in the stencils. The methods are based on a combination of a robust first order scheme and the Compact Approximate Taylor (CAT) methods of order 2p-order, p = 1 , 2 , … , P so that they are first order accurate near discontinuities and have order 2p in smooth regions, where ( 2 p + 1 ) is the size of the biggest stencil in which large gradients are n…

Shall We (Math and) Dance?

2019

Can we use mathematics, and in particular the abstract branch of category theory, to describe some basics of dance, and to highlight structural similarities between music and dance? We first summarize recent studies between mathematics and dance, and between music and categories. Then, we extend this formalism and diagrammatic thinking style to dance.

On Pseudofunctors Sending Groups to 2-Groups

2023

For a category B with finite products, we first characterize pseudofunctors from B to Cat whose corresponding opfibration is cartesian monoidal. Among those, we then characterize the ones which extend to pseudofunctors from internal groups to 2-groups. If B is additive, this is the case precisely when the corresponding opfibration has groupoidal fibres.

Distributors and the comprehensive factorization system for internal groupoids

2017

In this note we prove that distributors between groupoids in a Barr-exact category epsilon form the bicategory of relations relative to the comprehensive factorization system in Gpd(epsilon). The case epsilon = Set is of special interest.

SCORING ALTERNATIVE FORECAST DISTRIBUTIONS: COMPLETING THE KULLBACK DISTANCE COMPLEX

2018

We develop two surprising new results regarding the use of proper scoring rules for evaluating the predictive quality of two alternative sequential forecast distributions. Both of the proponents prefer to be awarded a score derived from the other's distribution rather than a score awarded on the basis of their own. A Pareto optimal exchange of their scoring outcomes provides the basis for a comparison of forecast quality that is preferred by both forecasters, and also evades a feature of arbitrariness inherent in using the forecasters' own achieved scores. The well-known Kullback divergence, used as a measure of information, is evaluated via the entropies in the two forecast distributions a…
