Geometric characterizations of the strict Hadamard differentiability of sets

2021

Let $S$ be a closed subset of a Banach space $X$. Assuming that $S$ is epi-Lipschitzian at $\bar{x}$ in the boundary $ \bd S$ of $S$, we show that $S$ is strictly Hadamard differentiable at $\bar{x}$ IFF the Clarke tangent cone $T(S, \bar{x})$ to $S$ at $\bar{x}$ contains a closed hyperplane IFF the Clarke tangent cone $T(\bd S, \bar{x})$ to $\bd S$ at $\bar{x}$ is a closed hyperplane. Moreover when $X$ is of finite dimension, $Y$ is a Banach space and $g: X \mapsto Y$ is a locally Lipschitz mapping around $\bar{x}$, we show that $g$ is strictly Hadamard differentiable at $\bar{x}$ IFF $T(\mathrm{graph}\,g, (\bar{x}, g(\bar{x})))$ is isomorphic to $X$ IFF the set-valued mapping $x\rightrigh…

Some Results about Frames

1997

In this paper we discuss some topics related to the general theory of frames. In particular we focus our attention to the existence of different 'reconstruction formulas' for a given vector of a certain Hilbert space and to some refinement of the perturbative approach for the computation of the dual frame.

Optimal transport on the classical Wiener space with different norms

2011

In this paper we study two basic facts of optimal transportation on Wiener space W. Our first aim is to answer to the Monge Problem on the Wiener space endowed with the Sobolev type norm (k,gamma) to the power of p (cases p = 1 and p > 1 are considered apart). The second one is to prove 1-convexity (resp. C-convexity) along (constant speed) geodesics of relative entropy in (P2(W);W2), where W is endowed with the infinite norm (resp. with (k,gamma) norm), and W2 is the 2-distance of Wasserstein.

Pointwise inequalities for Sobolev functions on generalized cuspidal domains

2022

We establish point wise inequalities for Sobolev functions on a wider class of outward cuspidal domains. It is a generalization of an earlier result by the author and his collaborators

Multi-resolution analysis in arbitrary Hilbert spaces

1997

We discuss the possibility of introducing a multi-resolution in a Hilbert space which is not necessarily a space of functions. We investigate which of the classical properties can be translated to this more general framework and the way in which this can be done. We comment on the procedure proposed by means of many examples.

Some perturbation results for quasi-bases and other sequences of vectors

2023

We discuss some perturbation results concerning certain pairs of sequences of vectors in a Hilbert space $\Hil$ and producing new sequences which share, with the original ones, { reconstruction formulas on a dense subspace of $\Hil$ or on the whole space}. We also propose some preliminary results on the same issue, but in a distributional settings.

On the non-triviality of the torsion subgroup of the abelianized Johnson kernel

2022

The Johnson kernel is the subgroup of the mapping class group of a closed oriented surface that is generated by Dehn twists along separating simple closed curves. The rational abelianization of the Johnson kernel has been computed by Dimca, Hain and Papadima, and a more explicit form was subsequently provided by Morita, Sakasai and Suzuki. Based on these results, Nozaki, Sato and Suzuki used the theory of finite-type invariants of 3-manifolds to prove that the torsion subgroup of the abelianized Johnson kernel is non-trivial. In this paper, we give a purely 2-dimensional proof of the non-triviality of this torsion subgroup and provide a lower bound for its cardinality. Our main tool is the …

Surgery equivalence relations for 3-manifolds

2023

By classical results of Rochlin, Thom, Wallace and Lickorish, it is well-known that any two 3-manifolds (with diffeomorphic boundaries) are related one to the other by surgery operations. Yet, by restricting the type of the surgeries, one can define several families of non-trivial equivalence relations on the sets of (diffeomorphism classes of) 3-manifolds. In this expository paper, which is based on lectures given at the school ``Winter Braids XI'' (Dijon, December 2021), we explain how certain filtrations of mapping class groups of surfaces enter into the definitions and the mutual comparison of these surgery equivalence relations. We also survey the ways in which concrete invariants of 3…

Generalized Dehn twists in low-dimensional topology

2021

The generalized Dehn twist along a closed curve in an oriented surface is an algebraic construction which involves intersections of loops in the surface. It is defined as an automorphism of the Malcev completion of the fundamental group of the surface. As the name suggests, for the case where the curve has no self-intersection, it is induced from the usual Dehn twist along the curve. In this expository article, after explaining their definition, we review several results about generalized Dehn twists such as their realizability as diffeomorphisms of the surface, their diagrammatic description in terms of decorated trees and the Hopf-algebraic framework underlying their construction. Going t…

The handlebody group and the images of the second Johnson homomorphism

2020

Given an oriented surface bounding a handlebody, we study the subgroup of its mapping class group defined as the intersection of the handlebody group and the second term of the Johnson filtration: $\mathcal{A} \cap J_2$. We introduce two trace-like operators, inspired by Morita's trace, and show that their kernels coincide with the images by the second Johnson homomorphism $\tau_2$ of $J_2$ and $\mathcal{A} \cap J_2$, respectively. In particular, we answer by the negative to a question asked by Levine about an algebraic description of $\tau_2(\mathcal{A} \cap J_2)$. By the same techniques, and for a Heegaard surface in $S^3$, we also compute the image by $\tau_2$ of the intersection of the …
