Landscape Ecological Structure in the Eastern Part of the North Vidzeme Biosphere Reserve, Latvia
2008
Landscape Ecological Structure in the Eastern Part of the North Vidzeme Biosphere Reserve, Latvia Latvia is a country where the forest area has increased and habitat fragmentation has reversed compared with many other European countries. In order to examine the effect of this expansion on biodiversity, vegetation maps dating from 2002 and the years 1930-1936 were used for comparative landscape structure analyses while archive materials from forest plans, and data from the national forest management database were used for land use analysis. Four landscape ecoregions in the eastern side of the North Vidzeme Biosphere Reserve were selected for analysis. Landscape structure indicators derived f…

Analysis of thin film cracking and buckling on compliant substrate by fragmentation test
2007
Application of coating fragmentation test for determination of coating properties is considered. A probabilistic model of coating fragmentation under uniaxial tensile loading is applied for coating and interface property identification of thin brittle coating/polymer substrate system. A finite element model is developed to simulate the process of buckle formation in coating strips during fragmentation test. The measured buckle geometry parameters and buckle density evolution as a function of the applied strain is used to estimate the interface toughness.
2018
This article states that nowadays there is an overuse (or a misuse) of the «Generation» idea. The discussion among many authors over the «Generation of crisis» concept suggests that it is useful to outline the characteristics of the target of population of the collective of youth who are mainly affected by the economic and social crisis over the past years. Nevertheless, through analyzing the meanings of the «Generation of Crisis» made by Mannheim, Ortega and other classic authors, it is clear that the social class approach together with the generational one are needed to define this concrete concept. The conclusion of the articleis that both approaches are seen as underpinning their utilit…
Exploring land snails’ response to habitat characteristics and their potential as bioindicators of riparian forest quality
2021
Abstract Riparian ecosystems are crucial for landscape-level biodiversity, especially in highly anthropic and agricultural areas. Although the low mobility of snails reduces their dispersal capacity and makes them vulnerable to habitat degradation, they are less commonly used as indicators. We evaluated the potential of land snails as bioindicators of riparian forest quality in central European riparian forests by surveying snail communities in relation to habitat characteristics that characterize its quality. Habitat characteristics were found to affect both snail abundance and species richness. The abundance of snail species increased with the forest continuity, forest width and abundance…
The Status of Romanogobio uranoscopus (Agassiz, 1828) Species, in Maramureş Mountains Nature Park (Romania)
2017
Abstract The condition of aquatic habitats typically occupied by Romanogobio uranoscopus within the Maramureş Mountains Natural Park fluctuates, in the best cases, between reduced to average. Good or excellent conservation status is now absent for populations of this species in the researched area. The identified human impact types (poaching, minor riverbeds morphodynamic changes, solid and liquid natural flow changes, destruction of the riparian vegetation and bush vegetation, habitat fragmentation/isolation of population, organic and mining pollution and displaced fish that are washed away during the periodic flooding in the lotic sectors uniformized by humans) are contributing to the dim…
H2O-content and temperature limit the explosive potential of rhyolite magma during Plinian eruptions
2019
Abstract Recent rhyolite eruptions on Earth have demonstrated their capacity to produce a multitude of hazards, including ash formation lasting months and impacting the large reaches of the southern hemisphere. Nevertheless, the underlying mechanisms driving these eruptions are not yet fully understood. Magmatic volatiles, especially H2O, dictate whether volcanic eruptions proceed explosively or effusively. Experimental evidence for the role played by H2O in driving explosive fragmentation is rare, in particular in the eruption of rhyolitic magma. Here we show that when hydrous rhyolitic obsidians from Chaiten Volcano (Chile) are experimentally heated above their glass transition temperatur…
