Splice donor site mutation in the lysosomal neuraminidase gene causing exon skipping and complete loss of enzyme activity in a sialidosis patient.

Sialidosis is a lysosomal storage disease caused by the deficiency of K K-N-acetylneuraminidase (NEU1; sialidase), the key enzyme for the intralysosomal catabolism of sialylated glycoconjugates. We have identified a homozygous transversion in the last intron (IVSE +1 Gs C) in neu1 of a sialidosis patient. Sequencing of the truncated cDNA revealed an alternatively spliced neu1 transcript which lacks the complete sequence of exon 5. Skipping of exon 5 leads to a frameshift and results in a premature termination codon. Abstract Reversible tyrosine phosphorylation of proteins is one of the major regulatory physiological events in response to cell-cell- and cell-matrix contact in Metazoa. Previously it was documented that the tyrosine phosphorylating enzymes, the tyrosine kinases (TKs), are autapomorphic characters of Metazoa, including sponges. In this paper the tyrosine dephosphorylating enzymes, the protein-tyrosine phosphatases (PTPs), are studied which can be grouped into two subfamilies, the soluble PTPs and the receptor PTPs (RPTPs). Cloning and characterization of PRB1, a Candida albicans gene encoding a putative novel endoprotease B and factors affecting its expression

Abstract Several cDNA fragments corresponding to transcripts differentially expressed under conditions that favor mycelial growth of Candida albicans were identified by the “differential display” technique. One of these was cloned and used as a probe to rescue the full gene from a genomic library of the fungus. The sequence identified a single, uninterrupted open reading frame of 1395 nucleotides encoding a putative protein of 465 residues and a theoretical molecular weight of 50.3 kDa, present in the genome as a single copy located at chromosome 2 in different strains. Putative evolutionary origin of plasmids carrying the genes involved in leucine biosynthesis in Buchnera aphidicola (endosymbiont of aphids)

An 8.5-kb plasmid encoding genes (leuABCD) involved in leucine biosynthesis and a small plasmid of 1.74 kb of yet unknown function were found in the intracellular symbiont, Buchnera aphidicola, of two divergent aphid species, Thelaxes suberi and Tetraneura caerulescens, respectively. The leuABCD-carrying plasmid (pBTs1) was amplified from total aphid DNA by inverse long PCR, using outwardly oriented oligonucleotide primers specific to leuA. Controlling the molecular diffusion in MOFs with the acidity of monocarboxylate modulators.

The catalytic performance of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is related to their physicochemical properties, such as particle size, defect-chemistry and porosity, which synthetic control can be potentially achieved by coordination modulation. By combining PXRD, 1HNMR, FT-IR, N2 uptake measurements we have found insights that the different types of defects (missing linker or missing clusters consequence of the spatial distribution of missing linkers, and the combination of both) could be controlled by the type of modulator employed. In this paper we present an ongoing research investigating the possibility and potential of integrating frame semantics, particularly FrameNet, in the Grammatical Framework (GF) application grammar development. An important component of GF is its Resource Grammar Library (RGL) that encapsulates the low-level linguistic knowledge about morphology and syntax of currently more than 20 languages facilitating rapid development of multilingual applications. Selective Change Driven Imaging: A Biomimetic Visual Sensing Strategy

Selective Change Driven (SCD) Vision is a biologically inspired strategy for acquiring, transmitting and processing images that significantly speeds up image sensing. SCD vision is based on a new CMOS image sensor which delivers, ordered by the absolute magnitude of its change, the pixels that have changed after the last time they were read out. Moreover, the traditional full frame processing hardware and programming methodology has to be changed, as a part of this biomimetic approach, to a new processing paradigm based on pixel processing in a data flow manner, instead of full frame image processing.
