I will send badass viruses. Peer threats and the interplay of pretend frames in a classroom dispute

2014

This paper explores threats as they appear in children's everyday dispute interactions. The main purpose is to extend understandings of children's interactions and disputes in order to show how young boys construct threats in pretend frames within a classroom peer dispute by drawing upon the resources of the video game world and a verbally constructed fight. The conceptual and methodological frameworks underpinning the analysis are conversation analysis and Goffman's concept of frame. The analysis focuses on one episode that illustrates how the boys, in the absence of the teacher, invoke, share and switch frames within the dispute. Using pretence, they posit threats and build attack strateg…

The aim of this study is to offer a didactic proposal for teaching mitigation in Spanish Business, in Spanish a…

A Multi-Phase Decode-and-Forward Transmission Protocol in Cognitive Relay Networks: Outage Analysis and Relay Power Allocation

2015

Consider an underlay cognitive relay network with multiple source and destination pairs and that a decode-and-forward scheme is adopted at the relay. We propose a multi-phase transmission protocol in this paper which involves cooperation among source, relay and destination nodes. Given perfect interference elimination before decoding at the destination nodes, we derive closed-form expressions for outage probability calculation over Rayleigh fading channels. Furthermore, the optimal relay power allocation factor which leads to minimal outage probability is determined. Numerical results reveal the conditions under which satisfactory performance can be achieved based on the proposed scheme.

Enhanced expression of a cloned and sequenced Ciona intestinalis TNFa-like (CiTNFa) gene during the LPS-induced inflammatory response.

2008

A tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNFalpha)-like gene from Ciona intestinalis (CiTNF alpha-like) body wall challenged with bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) was cloned and sequenced 4 h after LPS inoculation. An open reading frame of 936 bp encoding a propeptide of 312 amino acids (35.4 kDa) displaying a transmembrane domain from positions 7 to 29, a TACE cleavage site, and a mature peptide domain of 185 amino acids (20.9 kDa), was determined with a predicted isoelectric point of 9.4. The phylogenetic tree based on deduced amino acid sequences of invertebrate TNF-like protein and vertebrate TNFs supported the divergence between the ascidian and vertebrate TNF families, whereas D. melanogaster…

Prospective evaluation of hepatic steatosis in HIV-infected patients with or without hepatitis C virus co-infection

2012

Background: Limited data are available on hepatic steatosis (HS) in HIV patients who are not infected with hepatitis C virus (HCV). The aims of this study were to assess the prevalence of HS and its risk factors in HIV patients with and without HCV infection, and to evaluate whether HS correlates with advanced liver fibrosis and/or cardiovascular disease risk. Methods: Fifty-seven HIV mono-infected and 61 HIV/HCV co-infected patients were enrolled consecutively. All patients underwent liver ultrasound and transient elastography. The main parameters of liver function, HIV and HCV viral loads, CD4+ cell counts, and data on highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) were recorded. Cardiovasc…

Influence of column shear failure on pushover based assessment of masonry infilled reinforced concrete framed structures: A case study

2017

Structural frames, constructed either of steel or reinforced concrete (RC), are often infilled with masonry panels. However, during the analysis of the structural frames, it has become common practice to disregard the existence of infills because of the complexity in modeling. This omission should not be allowed because the two contributions (of infills and of frames) complement each other in providing a so different structural system. The use of different modeling assumptions significantly affects the capacity as well as the inelastic demand and safety assessment. In specific, the adoption of equivalent diagonal pin-jointed struts leaves open the problem of the evaluation of the additional…

Integrability Conditions: Recent Results in the Theory of Integrable Models

1990

This paper reports various results achieved recently in the theory of integrable models. These are summarised in the Fig.1! At the Chester meeting [1] two of the authors were concerned [1] with the local Riemann-Hilbert problem (double-lined box in the centre of Fig.1), its limit as a non-local Riemann-Hilbert problem used to solve classical integrable models in 2+1 dimensions (two space and one time dimensions) [2,3], and the connection of this Riemann-Hilbert problem with Ueno’s [4] Riemann-Hilbert problem associated with the representation of the algebra gl(∞) in terms of Z⊗Z matrices (Z the integers) and the solution of the K-P equations in 2+1. We were also concerned [1] with the const…

Triplet–Triplet Annihilation Upconversion in a MOF with Acceptor‐Filled Channels

2019

Abstract Photon upconversion has enjoyed increased interest in the last years due to its high potential for solar‐energy harvesting and bioimaging. A challenge for triplet–triplet annihilation upconversion (TTA‐UC) processes is to realize these features in solid materials without undesired phase segregation and detrimental dye aggregation. To achieve this, we combine a palladium porphyrin sensitizer and a 9,10‐diphenylanthracene annihilator within a crystalline mesoporous metal–organic framework using an inverted design. In this modular TTA system, the framework walls constitute the fixed sensitizer, while caprylic acid coats the channels providing a solventlike environment for the mobile a…
