Free-space delay lines and resonances with ultraslow pulsed Bessel beams

2008

We investigate the ultraslow motion of polychromatic Bessel beams in unbounded, nondispersive media. Control over the group velocity is exercised by means of the angular dispersion of pulsed Bessel beams of invariant transverse spatial frequency, which spontaneously emerge from near-field generators. Temporal dynamics in transients and resonances over homogeneous delay lines (dielectric slabs) are also examined.

Single-step superresolution by interferometric imaging

2009

The use of vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) arrays for implementation of incoherent source superresolution is presented. The method uses an interferometer setup to obtain superresolution in a single step. The novelty of the method relies on the use of a VCSEL array as the light source, which provides a set of coherent sources which are mutually incoherent. The technique accomplishes the transmission of several spatial frequency bands of the object's spectrum in parallel by use of spatial multiplexing that occurs because of the tilted illumination of the source array. The recording process is done by interference of each frequency band with a complementary set of reference plan…

Chaotic-like behavior of modulated waves in a nonlinear discrete LC transmission line

2003

International audience; Modulational instability (MI) in a discrete nonlinear LC transmission line is investigated. The higher order nonlinear Schrodinger (NLS) equation modeling modulated waves propagation in the network allows to predict the MI conditions, with additional features, compared to the standard NLS model. More precisely, a chaotic-like behavior of the system, which is observed in a particular frequency domain, is related to the nonrepeatability of the numerical experiments.

White-light implementation of the Wigner-distribution function with an achromatic processor.

2010

A temporally incoherent optical processor that combines diffractive and refractive components is proposed for performing two different operations simultaneously: an achromatic image along an axis and an achromatic one-dimensional Fourier transformation along the orthogonal axis. These properties are properly employed to achieve the achromatic white-light display of the Wigner-distribution function associated with a one-dimensional real signal, with high redundancy and variable scale.

Three-dimensional mapping and range measurement by means of projected speckle patterns.

2008

We present a novel approach for three-dimensional (3D) measurements that includes the projection of coherent light through ground glass. Such a projection generates random speckle patterns on the object or on the camera, depending if the configuration is transmissive or reflective. In both cases the spatially random patterns are seen by the sensor. Different spatially random patterns are generated at different planes. The patterns are highly random and not correlated. This low correlation between different patterns is used for both 3D mapping of objects and range finding.

Moderate-to-Strong Turbulence Generation in a Laboratory Indoor Free Space Optics Link and Error Mitigation via RaptorQ Codes

2016

Free Space Optics (FSO) is rapidly gaining interest as a line-of sight communication technology that offers capabilities similar - in terms of bandwidth and transfer rates - to optical fibre, also possessing several advantages compared with traditional radio frequency links. However, FSO link quality can be strongly affected by unfavourable weather conditions and also by the phenomenon of optical turbulence, even in clear sky. In this work, we have implemented an indoor FSO link and generated moderate-to-strong turbulence conditions along the optical path by using heaters and a mechanical ventilation system. In this way, we have been able to investigate the effects of the generated turbulen…

Modulation instability scenario in negative index materials

2010

We present an investigation of the critical frequency windows permitting modulation instability in negative index materials. The principal motivation for our analysis stems from the impact of the inevitable presence of the effective dispersive magnetic permeability in addition to the effective dielectric permittivity determining the propagation model for ultrashort pulses in negative index materials. We emphasize the influence of nonlinear dispersion terms, arising out of the combinatorial effect of the dispersive permeability with the nonlinear polarization, over the MI phenomena, the outcome of its development achieved by using linear stability analysis. Gain spectrum investigation has be…

Rotational Doppler Frequency Shift from Time‐Evolving High‐Order Pancharatnam–Berry Phase: A Metasurface Approach

2021

The Doppler frequency shift of sound or electromagnetic waves has been widely investigated in many different contexts and, nowadays, represents a formidable tool in medicine, engineering, astrophysics, and optics. Such effect is commonly described in the framework of the universal energy-momentum conservation law. In particular, the rotational Doppler effect has been recently demonstrated using light carrying orbital angular momentum. When a wave undergoes a cyclic adiabatic transformation of its Hamiltonian, it is known to acquire the so-called Pancharatnam–Berry (PB) phase. In this work, an experimental evidence of the direct connection between the high-order PB phase time evolution on th…

Using Partial Coherence and Digital Holography for 3D Imaging and Profile Extraction

2008

Two approaches for 3D imaging are presented. At first we use partial coherence of the light source and in the second we compute the unwrapped phase by illuminating the object from several slightly different angles.

Optically-undistorted digital holographic microscopy for quantitative phase-contrast imaging

2011

We propose a telecentric architecture for circumventing, by a pure-optical method, the residual phase distortion inherent to standard configuration of digital holographic microscopy (DHM). With this proposal there is no need for computer compensation of the parabolic phase during the phase map recovering procedure. Futhermore, in off-axis configuration, the spatial frequency useful domain is enlarged. The validity of the method is demonstrated by performing quantitative measurements of depth differences
