Financial distress and real economic activity in Lithuania: a Granger causality test based on mixed-frequency VAR

2020

In this paper, we extend the monthly financial stress index for Lithuania, computed by the European Central Bank, to a daily frequency and we also include banking sector stress among its constituents, beyond bond, equity and foreign exchange markets. We investigate the causal relationship between the daily financial stress index and monthly industrial production growth, using a Granger causality test applied to a mixed-frequency VAR. Our results suggest evidence of Granger causality from financial stress to industrial production growth once the index is enriched by daily observations from the financial markets. Our findings, based on impulse response analysis, confirm the negative effect of…

Tailoring sparse multivariable regression techniques for prognostic single-nucleotide polymorphism signatures.

2011

When seeking prognostic information for patients, modern technologies provide a huge amount of genomic measurements as a starting point. For single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), there may be more than one million covariates that need to be simultaneously considered with respect to a clinical endpoint. Although the underlying biological problem cannot be solved on the basis of clinical cohorts of only modest size, some important SNPs might still be identified. Sparse multivariable regression techniques have recently become available for automatically identifying prognostic molecular signatures that comprise relatively few covariates and provide reasonable prediction performance. For illus…

Cavity losses for the dissipative Jaynes–Cummings Hamiltonian beyond rotating wave approximation

2007

A microscopic derivation of the master equation for the Jaynes-Cummings model with cavity losses is given, taking into account the terms in the dissipator which vary with frequencies of the order of the vacuum Rabi frequency. Our approach allows to single out physical contexts wherein the usual phenomenological dissipator turns out to be fully justified and constitutes an extension of our previous analysis [Scala M. {\em et al.} 2007 Phys. Rev. A {\bf 75}, 013811], where a microscopic derivation was given in the framework of the Rotating Wave Approximation.

Tests for real and complex unit roots in vector autoregressive models

2014

The article proposes new tests for the number of real and complex unit roots in vector autoregressive models. The tests are based on the eigenvalues of the sample companion matrix. The limiting distributions of the eigenvalues converging to the unit eigenvalues turn out to be of a non-standard form and expressible in terms of Brownian motions. The tests are defined such that the null distributions related to eigenvalues +/-1 are the same. The tests for the unit eigenvalues with nonzero imaginary part are defined independently of the angular frequency. When the tests are adjusted for deterministic terms, the null distributions usually change. Critical values are tabulated via simulations. Al…

A methodology for optimisation of solar dish-Stirling systems size, based on the local frequency distribution of direct normal irradiance

2021

Abstract In geographical areas where direct solar irradiation levels are relatively high, concentrated solar energy systems are one of the most promising green energy technologies. Dish-Stirling systems are those that achieve the highest levels of solar-to-electric conversion efficiency, and yet they are still among the least common commercially available technologies. This paper focuses on a strategy aimed at promoting greater diffusion of dish-Stirling systems, which involves optimizing the size of the collector aperture area based on the hourly frequency distributions of beam irradiance and defining a new incentive scheme with a feed-in tariff that is variable with the installed costs of…

Influence of Uniaxial Pressure on Dielectric Properties of the PLZT-x/65/35 (x = 11 and 13) Ceramics

2012

Uniaxial pressure (0–1000 bars) effects on the dielectric properties of the PLZT-x/65/35 ceramic samples (x = 11 and 13) samples was investigated. The obtained results reveal that the applied stress largely changes the dielectric properties of these ceramics. Applying uniaxial pressure leads to a reduction of the peak intensity of the electric permittivity and a change of the frequency dispersion. Besides with increasing the pressure the ϵ-peak shifts to a higher temperature. The results show that applying the uniaxial pressure induces similar effects as increasing the Ti−ion concentration in PZT system. These effects can be connected with the change in domain structure under the action of …

Efficient energy conversion for cubic third-harmonic generation that is phase matched in KTiOPO(4).

2000

We demonstrate, for the first time to our knowledge, that efficient third-harmonic generation can be achieved with a cubic contribution much larger than the quadratic processes. An energy-conversion efficiency of 2.4% is achieved for cubic third-harmonic generation that is phase matched along the x axis of a KTiOPO(4) crystal by use of a picosecond fundamental laser emitting at 1618 nm. The associated cascading processes are only 10% of the pure cubic interaction, which is very suitable for study of the specific quantum optical correlations. Calculations of the third-harmonic generation conversion efficiency with respect to group-velocity dispersion and to the longitudinal Gaussian beam pro…

A set-up for simultaneous measurement of second harmonic generation and streaming potential and some test applications.

2018

We present a measurement cell that allows simultaneous measurement of second harmonic generation (SHG) and streaming potential (SP) at mineral-water interfaces with flat specimen that are suitable for non-linear optical (NLO) studies. The set-up directly yields SHG data for the interface of interest and can also be used to obtain information concerning the influence of flow on NLO signals from that interface. The streaming potential is at present measured against a reference substrate (PTFE). The properties of this inert reference can be independently determined for the same conditions. With the new cell, for the first time the SHG signal and the SP for flat surfaces have been simultaneousl…
