Dead-time impact on the harmonic distortion and conversion efficiency in a three-phase five-level Cascaded H-Bridge inverter: mathematical formulatio…

2023

To avoid leg short-circuit in inverters, dead time must be introduced on leg gate signals. Dead time affects the inverter output voltage fundamental harmonic amplitude, voltage harmonic distortion and inverter efficiency by introducing additional voltage drops. In this regard, dead time effects have been widely investigated for traditional two-level three-phase voltage source inverters in the literature but not extensively for multilevel topology structures. This paper provides a detailed analysis of dead time impact on the harmonic distortion and efficiency of Cascaded H-Bridges Multilevel Inverters (CHBMIs). For this purpose, a general mathematical formulation to determine voltage drop du…

On the function of cell systems in area 18. Part I

1981

In addition to the asymmetry of the spatial coupling and of the specific temporal combination of excitation and inhibition, the non-linearity is very pronounced in area 18. Taking the sequence of a linear operation and a stationary nonlinear characteristic as a model, the experimental findings can be systematized and a cell classification specified which departs from the customary ones. The hypercomplex cell system probably originates in recurrent inhibition and leads to differentiation of the patterns along their contour line. Problems of cell classification and of the type of parallelism in the visual cortex are discussed.

A framework for assessing frequency domain causality in physiological time series with instantaneous effects.

2013

We present an approach for the quantification of directional relations in multiple time series exhibiting significant zero-lag interactions. To overcome the limitations of the traditional multivariate autoregressive (MVAR) modelling of multiple series, we introduce an extended MVAR (eMVAR) framework allowing either exclusive consideration of time-lagged effects according to the classic notion of Granger causality, or consideration of combined instantaneous and lagged effects according to an extended causality definition. The spectral representation of the eMVAR model is exploited to derive novel frequency domain causality measures that generalize to the case of instantaneous effects the kno…

Two-Color Radiation Generated in a Seeded Free-Electron Laser with Two Electron Beams.

2015

We present the experimental evidence of the generation of coherent and statistically stable two-color free-electron laser radiation obtained by seeding an electron beam double peaked in energy with a laser pulse single spiked in frequency. The radiation presents two neat spectral lines, with time delay, frequency separation, and relative intensity that can be accurately controlled. The analysis of the emitted radiation shows a temporal coherence and a shot-to-shot regularity in frequency significantly enhanced with respect to the self-amplified spontaneous emission. © 2015 American Physical Society. © 2015 American Physical Society.

Why the Pirate Party Won the German Election of 2009 or The Trouble With Predictions: A Response to Tumasjan, A., Sprenger, T. O., Sander, P. G., &am…

2011

In their article “Predicting Elections with Twitter: What 140 Characters Reveal About Political Sentiment,” the authors Andranik Tumasjan, Timm O. Sprenger, Philipp G. Sandner, and Isabell M. Welpe (TSSW) the authors claim that it would be possible to predict election outcomes in Germany by examining the relative frequency of the mentions of political parties in Twitter messages posted during the election campaign. In this response we show that the results of TSSW are contingent on arbitrary choices of the authors. We demonstrate that as of yet the relative frequency of mentions of German political parties in Twitter message allows no prediction of election results.

Development and implementation of high-throughput SNP genotyping in barley

2009

Abstract Background High density genetic maps of plants have, nearly without exception, made use of marker datasets containing missing or questionable genotype calls derived from a variety of genic and non-genic or anonymous markers, and been presented as a single linear order of genetic loci for each linkage group. The consequences of missing or erroneous data include falsely separated markers, expansion of cM distances and incorrect marker order. These imperfections are amplified in consensus maps and problematic when fine resolution is critical including comparative genome analyses and map-based cloning. Here we provide a new paradigm, a high-density consensus genetic map of barley based…

HLA antigens in Sicilian patients affected by chronic myelogenous leukaemia.

1987

SUMMARY HLA antigens were investigated in Sicilian patients with chronic myelogenous leukaemia (CML) and in Sicilian healthy controls. The frequency of the HLA-DRw6 antigen was significantly decreased in the group of patients. These results suggest that DRw6 may be a marker for decreased susceptibility to the etiological or pathogenic mechanism(s) which produce CMLs.

Forensic animal DNA typing: Allele nomenclature and standardization of 14 feline STR markers

2014

Since the domestic cat (Felis catus) has become one of the most popular pets and owners usually develop a close relationship to their cats, it is necessary to take traces of cats into account for forensic casework. For this purpose feline short tandem (STR) repeat markers have been investigated in several earlier studies, but no detailed description of sequence data, allelic variations or a repeat-based nomenclature is available. The aim of the study was to provide a suggestion for the allele nomenclature of 14 cat STR markers according to the recommendations of the International Society for Forensic Genetics (ISFG) for human DNA typing and to present a standardized system for a secure DNA …

Sex-dependent genetic markers of CYP3A4 expression and activity in human liver microsomes

2007

Objective: To find genetic markers of the individual cytochrome P450 (CYP)3A expression. Methods: A large collection of liver samples phenotyped for CYP3A expression and activity was genotyped for CYP3A variants. Data were analyzed for associations between CYP3A phenotypes and genotypes, and for evidence of recent selection. Results: We report associations between the hepatic CYP3A4 protein expression level, as well as its enzymatic activity, measured as verapamil N-dealkylation, and genetic polymorphisms from two regions within the CYP3A gene cluster. One region is defined by several variants, mostly located within CYP3A7, the other by a single nucleotide polymorphism in intron 7 of CYP3A…

CD45 and multiple sclerosis: the exon 4 C77G polymorphism (additional studies and meta-analysis) and new markers

2003

We re-evaluated the association with multiple sclerosis (MS) of the C77G splicing regulatory variation in the CD45 gene and screened for new mutations the three alternatively spliced exons (#4, 5 and 6). No association with C77G was detected in two groups of patients (total=448) and controls (total=559) from Northern and Southern Italy. When excluding the first published study indicating a positive association, a meta-analysis of the five further studies conducted to date (including the present one) led to a non-significant combined odds ratio (OR) of 1.11. None of the four newly identified nucleotide substitutions, namely C77T (Pro59Pro) in exon 4, G69C (Asp121His) in exon 5, T127A (Ile187…
