Determination of dithiocarbamates and metabolites in plants by liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry

Abstract A quantitative matrix solid-phase dispersion and liquid chromatography–atmospheric pressure chemical ionization mass spectrometry (LC–APCI–MS) method is outlined for the simultaneous analysis of dithiocarbamates (DTCs) and their degradation products in plants. Compounds analyzed are dazomet, disulfiram, thiram and the metabolites ethylenthiourea and propylenthiourea. The performance of two different sample preparation protocols, the proposed one and other based on solid-phase extraction, as well as, of both atmospheric pressure ionization sources, APCI and electrospray, were compared. Routine application using single quadrupole liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry to pesticides analysis in citrus fruits.

Abstract A rapid and sensitive liquid chromatography–electrospray ionization–mass spectrometry method has been developed for the routine analysis of buprofezin, bupirimate, hexaflumuron, tebufenpyrad, fluvalinate and pyriproxyfen in citrus fruits. Extracts were obtained by matrix solid-phase dispersion (MSPD) using C 18 as dispersant and dichloromethane-methanol (80:20, v/v) as eluent. Matrix effects were tested for all matrices by addition of standard to sample blank extracts (samples containing no detectable residues). Abstract Staphylococcus aureus is an important pathogen and has been indicated as the fifth causative agent of food-borne human illness throughout the world. Staphylococcal enterotoxins (SEs) are toxic compounds excreted mainly by strains of S. aureus. Among these toxins, enterotoxins A (SEA) and B (SEB) are both of the most prevalent compounds in staphylococcal food poisoning. In this work, reverse phase liquid chromatography coupled to ESI mass spectrometry (LC–ESI/MS) has been applied for its rapid identification and quantification. A liquid chromatographic method, with electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry (LC-ESI-MS-MS), has been developed for determining acrinathrin, carbosulfan, cyproconazole, lambda-cyhalothrin, kresoxim methyl, pyrifenox, pyriproxyfen, propanil, and tebufenpyrad in fruits. The ions prominent in ESI spectra were [M + H]+ and [M + Na]+. In the mass analyzer, collision-induced dissociation fragmentation involved common pathways, for example, product ions of [M + H]+ resulted from the cleavage of the carbamic group or an oxygen bound. The use of near-infrared spectrometry in the olive oil industry.

The enormous possibilities offered by near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy for the (on/in/at-line) quality control process of olive fruits, pastes, and oils are summarized throughout this paper. Special attention has been paid to the combination of NIR and chemometric treatments for the on-line analysis of olive fruits and also for the quality parameters evaluation on olive oils and pastes which can enhance the production of a high quality olive oil and the selection of olive fruit with superior properties. The implementation of NIR sensors in olive mills with successful results has also been reviewed and the commercial olive fruit and oil analyzers highlighted.

Cherimolin-1, New Selective Inhibitor of the First Energy-Coupling Site of the NADH:Ubiquinone Oxidoreductase (Complex I)

The mechanism linking electron transport to proton translocation in the NADH:ubiquinone oxidoreductase (complex I of the mitochondrial respiratory chain) is still unclear. Inhibitors acting at different sites of the enzyme are powerful tools to clarify this mechanism. Up to now, a unique inhibitor, the Annonaceous acetogenin rolliniastatin-2, selectively blocks the most internal proton-translocation site. This study introduces cherimolin-1, a new acetogenin that inhibits the complex I with this special mode of action, which is more easily available from the plant material. Moreover, the mode of action of this scarce type of complex I inhibitor is further characterized.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of thermal processing on physicochemical properties, steviol glycosides, bioactive compounds, and antioxidant capacity degradation of a beverage based on exotic fruit juices, orange juice, açaí, and oat and sweetened with Stevia rebaudiana water extracts at different concentrations. Deficit irrigation does not affect alternate bearing of ‘Valencia’ orange trees

This study evaluated the effect of long-term partial rootzone drying and continuous deficit irrigation on the degree of alternate bearing of adult ‘Valencia’ orange trees grown in northern Sicily. Effects of partial rootzone drying and rootstock vigour on growth and fruit quality of 'Pink Lady' apple trees in Mediterranean environments

We investigated the effects of partial rootzone drying (PRD) and rootstock vigour on water relations, and vegetative and productive performance of ‘Pink Lady’ apple (Malus domestica Borkh.) trees in central Sicily. Activities of NAD(+)-dependent sorbitol dehydrogenase (SDH), sorbitol oxidase (SOX), sucrose synthase (SS), acid invertase (AI), and neutral invertase (NI) in 'Encore' peach (Prunus persica L.) fruits and developing shoot tips were assayed during the growing season to determine whether carbohydrate metabolizing enzymes could serve as indicators of sink strength.
