In Sicily fresh plants have for years been replacing the once popular cold-stored ones. Good early cropping is the aim of all strawberry growers in the island s Marsala district. The present trial tested the response of the new strawberry cultivars Sabrosa and Florida Fortuna using fresh plug and bare-root plants. Florida Fortuna plug-plants turned out to be the most promising type as a cash crop in delivering extra early ripening.

The aim of this study was to implement a wireless instrumented sphere to study the critical points in a citrus packing line by real-time measuring the impacts experienced by fruits. The noncommercial device was based on a MEMS (microelectro-mechanical system) sensor node with a sensing range from ±1 g to ±400 g (g = 9.8 m s-2), a ferroelectric RAM (FRAM) memory, a radio frequency (RF) transmitter, a microcontroller, and a 75 mAh lithium battery. During the spring flush of growth both vegetative shoots and inflorescences are formed in Citrus. Some of these inflorescences bear both flowers and leaves (GOLDSCHMIDT and MONSELISE 1972). The leaves from leafy inflorescences are smaller in size (GUARDIOLA et al. 1984) and differ in composition, both organic (SANZ et al. 1987b) and mineral (EMBLETON et al. 1973) as compared to leaves from vegetative sprouts. Some of these differences are related to the competition of nearby developing flowers and fruitlets, but a different type of regulation may also be involved.
