The C-terminal rod 2 fragment of filamin A forms a compact structure that can be extended

2012

Filamins are large proteins that cross-link actin filaments and connect to other cellular components. The C-terminal rod 2 region of FLNa (filamin A) mediates dimerization and interacts with several transmembrane receptors and intracellular signalling adaptors. SAXS (small-angle X-ray scattering) experiments were used to make a model of a six immunoglobulin-like domain fragment of the FLNa rod 2 (domains 16–21). This fragment had a surprising three-branched structural arrangement, where each branch was made of a tightly packed two-domain pair. Peptides derived from transmembrane receptors and intracellular signalling proteins induced a more open structure of the six domain fragment. Mutagen…

Biophysical investigation on therapeutic proteins (Chaperonins, Hsp60 and CCT/TRiC) involved in human diseases

Molecular chaperones are indispensable cellular components that assist folding and assembly of newly synthesized proteins, translocation of proteins across membranes, as well as refolding and degrading of misfolded and aggregated proteins. In the last few years, innovative therapeutic strategies targeting stability and functionality of chaperones have received great attention, particularly in the field of neurodegenerative diseases. Moreover, the growing number of diseases found linked to chaperone mutations, testifies to the importance of their role in the cellular protein-quality control mechanism. The investigation of the biophysical interactions between chaperones and specific proteins …

A modelling population-based approach to the effect of granulocyte growth factors during chemotherapy-induced neutropenia

2020

The work of this thesis is based on results of a cohort study whose main objective was to define the optimal schedule of prophylactic administration of granulocyte growth factors (G-CSF) in the context of FOLFIRINOX treatment. For this purpose, a pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic (PK/PD) model was built to describe the absolute neutrophil counts (ANC) time course in our population, including the three chemotherapies neutropenic effect, but also the stimulating effect of exogenous G-CSF on the proliferation and maturation of neutrophils. Based on the estimates of the model parameters, simulations were performed to determine the incidence and duration of neutropenia for each prophylactic G-CSF …

L'abandon sportif : des motifs d'abandon aux modèles théoriques : une recherche longitudinale chez les handballeuses et les basketteuses

2011

The objective of this thesis was on the one hand to identify the motives for dropout handballers and the basketballers Syrian women and to test on the other hand three theoretical models which explain the dropout of sport. A first study (N = 402) attempted to identify the reasons for dropout for these players. The results showed that the players estimate that certain reasons (e.g., to get pregnant, to have a husband which does not make it possible to his wife any more to make sport) are very important to give up sport. Some reasons are in function of the type and level of players as well as the age and level of experience. A second study (N = 328) tested the model of dropout of Sarrazin and…

Driving forces affecting the adoption of certifications in the forest-based industry: a systematic literature review

2021

Several forest certification schemes have become increasingly popular over the last few decades as voluntary mechanisms to tack sustainability in the forest-based industry to an environmental, social, and economic paradigm. This study aims to systematically review the economic literature on the main motivational factors affecting the adoption of Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) certifications in order to perform a broadly theoretical assessment of this research field and identify the most relevant driving forces affecting the adoption of third-party certification in the forest-based industry. Results reveal that the most relev…

AbstractThe genetic conflict between parents and their offspring is a cornerstone of kin selection theory and the gene-centred view of evolution, but whether it actually occurs in natural systems remains an open question. Conflict operates only if parenting is driven by genetic trade-offs between offspring performance and the parent’s ability to raise additional offspring, and its expression critically depends on the shape of these trade-offs. Here we investigate the occurrence and nature of genetic conflict in an insect with maternal care, the earwig Forficula auricularia. Specifically, we test for a direct response to experimental selection on female future reproduction and correlated res…

Lekking in the black grouse— a test of male viability

1991

LEKS, where males congregate to display and females attend only to mate, present one of the most remarkable outcomes of sexual selection1. It is a common but untested belief that females mate with the most vigorous males2. In leks of the black grouse Tetrao tetrix, males dominant in winter flocks were most successful in mating, as were males winning fights over female dummies placed at territory boundaries. Males tear feathers from each others' tail ornaments in combats, and attractive males always had undamaged tails. We report here that by choosing victorious males, females mate with males that are most likely to survive the following six months. There is a strong association between fema…

Influences on mutual fund performance: comparing US and Europe using qualitative comparative analysis

2019

This study examines the conditions that lead mutual funds to underperform or outperform competitors. Using fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA), we draw upon extensive research on fund returns to affirm and extend earlier discoveries. Fund performance (Morningstar ratings), features of the funds themselves, and characteristics of the fund managers are considered. Positive Morningstar star and analyst ratings are necessary conditions for funds to generate value (measured by Jensen’s alpha). Funds with low management fees and low ongoing fees have attractive Sharpe ratios and high returns. Likewise, large funds with good Morningstar ratings have good Sharpe ratios and returns, o…

Orphan symptoms in advanced cancer patients followed at home

2013

Abstract Orphan symptoms are rarely assessed, particularly at home. The aim of this multicenter prospective study was to assess the prevalence of these symptoms and eventual factors possibly associated in advanced cancer patients at admission of a home care program. A prospective study was performed at three home care programs in Italy. Patients' data were collected, including age, sex, diagnosis, and Karnofsky status. Possible contributing factors were analyzed; preexisting neurological diseases, cerebral metastases, hyperthermia, diabetes, a state of dehydration clinically evident and/or oliguria, possible biochemical parameters when available, data regarding recent chemotherapy, opioids …
