Evolutionary trade-offs in a small mammal : a quantitative genetics approach

Limited resources force individuals to trade-off between life-history traits. A vast diversity of life-history strategies, which optimally combine life history traits, can be found. Knowledge of the genetic basis of this phenotypic variation is key to understanding evolutionary processes. I approached life-history evolution by estimating quantitative genetic parameters for a set of life-history traits in the bank vole (Myodes glareolus). The work is based on a laboratory-kept colony subjected to two-way selection for litter size (High- (H) and Low- (L) lines). Meditāciju saistība ar smadzeņu darbību, izmantojot elektroencefalogrāfu (EEG), randomizēti kontrolētos pētījumos: metaanalīze

Mūsdienās meditācijas tiek praktizētas ne tikai austrumos, bet kļuvušas populāras arī rietumu pasaulē. Šajā metaanalīzē tika meklēta atbilde uz jautājumu, kādas saistības pastāv starp meditācijām un galvas smadzeņu viļņu darbību pieaugušajiem randomizēti kontrolētos pētījumos. Metaanalīzē tika iekļauti trīs pētījumi ar alfas viļņu rādītājiem un kopējo izlases apjomu N = 94. Metaanalīzes aprēķini uzrāda nelielu statistiski nozīmīgu efektu r = 0,20 (p<0,001). Tādējādi šī pētījuma ietvaros secināms, ka pēc meditācijām novērojams neliels efekts uz galvas smadzeņu alfa viļņu rādītājiem. Adolescent reading and math skills and self-concept beliefs as predictors of age 20 emotional well-being

This study examines longitudinal associations among reading skills, math skills and emotional well-being in a Finnish sample (n = 586) followed from the end of comprehensive school (Grade 9, age 15–16) to age 20. In particular, we determine whether the associations between skills and well-being are mediated by self-concept beliefs. In Grade 9, the participants’ reading fluency, PISA reading comprehension and math skills were assessed in classrooms, and questionnaires were used to assess self-concept (global and skill-specific) and internalising problems. Bakalaura darba mērķis ir izzināt tipisku karsta izplatības areālu, izmantojot līdzšinējo pētījumu datus un analizējot LiDAR (tulk. - Light Detection And Ranging) datus, lai iegūtu pilnīgāku priekšstatu par karsta izpausmēm zemes virspusē. Pētījums veikts īpaši aizsargātā dabas teritorijā – ģeoloģiskajā un ģeomorfoloģiskajā dabas piemineklī “Skaistkalnes karsta kritenes”. Pētījuma izstrādes laikā tika pielietotas kamerālās un lauka pētījuma metodes.
