Ag44(SeR)30: A Hollow Cage Silver Cluster with Selenolate Protection.

2015

Selenolate protected, stable and atomically precise, hollow silver cluster was synthesized using solid state as well as solution state routes. The optical absorption spectrum shows multiple and sharp features similar to the thiolated Ag44 cluster, Ag44(SR)30 whose experimental structure was reported recently. High-resolution electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (HRESI MS) shows well-defined molecular ion features with two, three, and four ions with isotopic resolution, due to Ag44(SePh) 30. Additional characterization with diverse tools confirmed the composition. The closed-shell 18 electron superatom electronic structure, analogous to Ag44(SR)30 stabilizes the dodecahedral cage with a…

New nanobiohybrid engineering composed of titanate nanoribbons for regenerative medicine

2012

This research work is devoted to new nanohybrid engineering composed of titanate nanoribbons for regenerative medicine. Over a first phase, nanoribbons were synthesized by hydrothermal treatment and their morphological, structural and chemical features were defined. A fine characterization by means of different techniques of transmission electron microscopy mainly enabled to determine their thickness; dimension which had never been measured so far. Subsequently, titanate nanoribbons were functionalized by different home-made heterobifunctional PEG. Those polymers present at one of their extremities specific functional groups being able to couple with numerous biological molecules. Some coll…

Particle surface engineering effect on the mechanical, optical and photoluminescent properties of ZnO/vinyl-ester resin nanocomposites

2007

Zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles functionalized with a bi-functional coupling agent methacryloxypropyl-trimethoxysilane (MPS) were used to fabricate a vinyl-ester resin polymeric nanocomposite, which shows an improved interfacial interaction between the particle and matrix. As a result, in comparison to the unmodified particle-filled nanocomposites, the functionalized particle-filled composites possessed higher resistance to thermal degradation, and demonstrated improved UV shielding and enhanced photoluminescent properties. The more uniform particle dispersion, passivation of the particle surface with MPS and increased oxygen vacancies were justified to contribute to the increased thermal st…

Ligand-Protected Gold Nanoclusters as Superatoms—Insights from Theory and Computations

2012

Abstract Gold clusters and nanoparticles, stabilized by various ligands, exhibit a rich array of interesting and important electronic, optical, chemical and catalytic properties. Many particles can now be synthesized by wet chemistry, and they can be handled as normal chemicals: stored, modified and functionalized for applications in medical therapy, biolabelling, sensing, nanoelectronics and catalysis. In recent years, understanding of the stability, surface chemistry and functionalization of these interesting building blocks of nano-matter has taken a quantum leap. This is facilitated by simultaneous breakthroughs in experimental and theoretical fronts concerning accurate structural deter…

A continuum damage model for functionalized graphene membranes based on atomistic simulations

2017

A continuum model for GO membranes is developed in this study. The model is built representing the membrane as a two-dimensional, heterogeneous, two-phase continuum and the constitutive behavior of each phase (graphitic or oxidized) is built based on DFTB simulations of representative patches. A hyper-elastic continuum model is employed for the graphene areas, while a continuum damage model is more adequate for representing the behavior of oxidized regions. A finite element implementation for GO membranes subjected to degradation and failure is then implemented and, to avoid localization instabilities and spurious mesh sensitivity, a simple crack band model is adopted. The developed impleme…

Biomolecular conjugation inside synthetic polymer nanopores via glycoprotein-lectin interactions

2011

We demonstrate the supramolecular bioconjugation of concanavalin A (Con A) protein with glycoenzyme horseradish peroxidase (HRP) inside single nanopores, fabricated in heavy ion tracked polymer membranes. Firstly, the HRP-enzyme was covalently immobilized on the inner wall of the pores using carbodiimide coupling chemistry. The immobilized HRP-enzyme molecules bear sugar (mannose) groups available for the binding of Con A protein. Secondly, the bioconjugation of Con A on the pore wall was achieved through its biospecific interactions with the mannose residues of the HRP enzyme. The immobilization of biomolecules inside the nanopore leads to the reduction of the available area for ionic tran…

Single cigar-shaped nanopores functionalized with amphoteric amino acid chains: experimental and theoretical characterization.

2012

We present an experimental and theoretical characterization of single cigar-shaped nanopores with pH-responsive carboxylic acid and lysine chains functionalized on the pore surface. The nanopore characterization includes (i) optical images of the nanostructure obtained by FESEM; (ii) different chemical procedures for the nanopore preparation (etching time and functionalizations; pH and electrolyte concentration of the external solution) allowing externally tunable nanopore responses monitored by the current-voltage (I-V) curves; and (iii) transport simulations obtained with a multilayer nanopore model. We show that a single, approximately symmetric nanopore can be operated as a reconfigurab…

Formation of linear Ni nanochains inside carbon nanotubes: Prediction from density functional theory

2013

Abstract First principles calculations have been performed to investigate the ground state properties of monoperiodic single-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) containing nanochain of aligned Ni atoms inside. Using the PBE exchange-correlation functional ( E xc ) within the framework of density functional theory (DFT) we predict the clusterization of Ni filaments in ( n ,0) CNTs for n ⩾  9 and for ( n , n ) CNTs for n ⩾  6. The variations in formation energies obtained for equilibrium defective nanostructures allow us to predict the most stable Ni@CNT compositions. Finally, the electronic charge redistribution has been calculated in order to explore intermolecular properties leading to stronger…

Bimetallic PdAg nanoparticle arrays from monolayer films of diblock copolymer micelles

2015

MICROSCOPIE+ATARI+EEH:GMA:TBG:NSP:MAO; International audience; The self-assembly technique provides a highly efficient route to generate well-ordered structures on a nanometer scale. In this paper, well-ordered arrays of PdAg alloy nanoparticles on flat substrates with narrow distributions of particle size (6-7 nm) and interparticle spacing (about 60 nm) were synthesized by the block copolymer micelle approach. A home-made PS-b-P4VP diblock copolymer was prepared to obtain a micellar structure in toluene. Pd and Ag salts were then successfully loaded in the micellar core of the PS-b-P4VP copolymer. A self-assembled monolayer of the loaded micelles was obtained by dipping the flat substrate …
