Wood-inhabiting fungal communities : Opportunities for integration of empirical and theoretical community ecology

2022

Publisher Copyright: © 2021 The Author The interest in studying wood-inhabiting fungal communities has grown in recent years. This interest has mainly been motivated by the important roles of wood-inhabiting fungi in ecosystem functioning (e.g. nutrient cycling) and conservation biology (e.g. their sensitivity to forest management). In this paper, I argue that another important, but yet largely unexplored motivation for studying wood-inhabiting fungal communities, is their potential to advance fundamental community ecology. One major advantage of wood-inhabiting fungi as model systems is that they are organized as spatially well-defined metacommunities, thus conforming to the assumptions of…

Applying Support Vector Machines for Gene Ontology based gene function prediction.

2004

Abstract Background The current progress in sequencing projects calls for rapid, reliable and accurate function assignments of gene products. A variety of methods has been designed to annotate sequences on a large scale. However, these methods can either only be applied for specific subsets, or their results are not formalised, or they do not provide precise confidence estimates for their predictions. Results We have developed a large-scale annotation system that tackles all of these shortcomings. In our approach, annotation was provided through Gene Ontology terms by applying multiple Support Vector Machines (SVM) for the classification of correct and false predictions. The general perform…

A new model for germination of fungi.

2010

Abstract The objective of this study was to design a germination model dedicated to fungi. The percentage of germinated spores, P(%), depended on the maximum percentage of germination P max (%), the germination time, τ (h) and a design parameter, d (-) according to : P = P max 1 − 1 1 + t τ d . The model was capable to fit satisfactorily either apparent symmetric and asymmetric shapes of germination curves. The accuracy of τ determined by using the logistic or the present model was at least twice that obtained by the Gompertz equation. In contrast to the logistic model, the new model is by essence asymmetric. Therefore, its use is consistent with skewed distributions of the individual germi…

In vitro fungicidal activities of echinocandins against Candida metapsilosis, C. orthopsilosis, and C. parapsilosis evaluated by time-kill studies.

2010

ABSTRACT Anidulafungin, micafungin, and caspofungin in vitro activities against Candida metapsilosis , C. orthopsilosis , and C. parapsilosis were evaluated by MICs and time-kill methods. All echinocandins showed lower MICs (mean MICs, 0.05 to 0.71 mg/liter) and the highest killing rates (−0.06 to −0.05 CFU/ml/h) for C. metapsilosis and C. orthopsilosis rather than for C. parapsilosis (mean MICs, 0.59 to 1.68 mg/liter). Micafungin and anidulafungin killing rates were greater than those determined for caspofungin. None of the echinocandins had fungicidal activity against C. parapsilosis .

Validation of a predictive model for the growth of Botrytis cinerea and Penicillium expansum on grape berries.

2010

The objective of this study was to develop and to validate a model for predicting the combined effect of temperature and a(w) on the radial growth rate, mu, of Botrytis cinerea and Penicillium expansum on grape berries. The proposed strategy was based on the gamma-concept developed previously [Zwietering, M.H., Wijtzes, T., de Wit, J.C., van't Riet, K. 1992. A decision support system for prediction of the microbial spoilage in foods. Journal of Food Protection. 12, 973-979]: mu=mu(opt).gamma(T).gamma(a(w)), where the gamma functions were cardinal models with inflection (CMI), mu(opt) the radial growth rate on grape berries. Firstly, the cardinal temperatures and a(w)'s were estimated indepe…

Aflatoxins and ochratoxin A in stored barley grain in Spain and impact of PCR-based strategies to assess the occurrence of aflatoxigenic and ochratox…

2011

Contamination of barley by moulds and mycotoxins results in quality and nutritional losses and represents a significant hazard to the food chain. The presence of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), B2 (AFB2), G1 (AFG1) and G2 (AFG2) and ochratoxin A (OTA) in stored barley in Spain has been studied. Species-specific PCR assays were used for detection of Aspergillus flavus, A. parasiticus, A. ochraceus, A. steynii, A. westerdijkiae, A. carbonarius and A. niger aggregate in mycotoxin-positive barley samples at different incubation times (0, 1 and 2 days). Classical enumeration techniques (CFU/g) in different culture media for evaluation of Aspergillus in sections Flavi, Circumdati and Nigri were also used. O…

Fluconazole susceptibility of Italian Candida dabliniensis clinical isolates determined by reference and simplified tests

2001

Candida dubliniensis ia an opportunistic pathogen mainly associated with oral candidiasis in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected individuals. We recently recovered the first Italian clinical isolates of C. dubliniensis from the oral cavities of seven HIV-seropositive subjects. The in vitro susceptibility to fluconazole (FLCZ) of these isolates was determined according to the National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards (NCCLS) M27-A broth microdilution method for yeasts. All seven isolates of C. dubliniensis were susceptible to FLCZ (MICs < or =0.5 microg/ml). Results of this reference method were compared to those obtained with simplified tests, more adapted to routine eval…

What Do We Know about Candida auris? State of the Art, Knowledge Gaps, and Future Directions

2021

Candida auris has unprecedently emerged as a multidrug resistant fungal pathogen, considered a serious global threat due to its potential to cause nosocomial outbreaks and deep-seated infections with staggering transmissibility and mortality, that has put health authorities and institutions worldwide in check for more than a decade now. Due to its unique features not observed in other yeasts, it has been categorised as an urgent threat by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and other international agencies. Moreover, epidemiological alerts have been released in view of the increase of healthcare-associated C. auris outbreaks in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. This review su…
